🐾 PAWSATIVE TRAINING TUESDAY 🐾
Who Let the Barks Out? Understanding & Managing Excessive Barking 🐕
All dogs bark – it’s a normal way for them to communicate! Dogs use different barks depending on the situation, which is super helpful in figuring out why they might be barking excessively. If your dog (or your neighbour’s dog 🐶) is barking a lot, here’s what you can do:
• Work out Why – Dogs mainly bark to express what they’re feeling, like excitement, boredom, frustration, or fear. They might also bark out of anxiety or even learn to bark if they hear a neighbouring dog. Pay attention to where, when, and what your dog is barking at, and look for other signs like digging or pacing. 📊
• Start a Journal 📓 – If possible, keep a journal of the barking. Write down details like how long it lasts, where it happens (e.g. near the front gate), and what’s causing it (e.g. people passing by). A journal can help uncover the reason behind the barking and help you fix it! ✍️
• Be a Good Neighbour – If it’s your neighbour’s dog, it might help to kindly let them know their dog is barking when they’re not home. They may not even realise! Being patient with them as they work to resolve the issue can make a huge difference, though it could take some time. 🏡🗣️
• Control the Environment – If your dog barks at people walking past your property, try to block their view with things like shade cloths or extra fencing. Giving your dog a “safe space” (like a den or quiet spot) to go to when they feel overwhelmed can help reduce anxiety. 🏠🌳
• Provide Exercise – Sometimes dogs bark excessively simply because they’re bored. Regular walks, runs, or playtime can help, but don’t forget mental stimulation too! Use toys like Kongs, training sessions, or puzzles to keep their minds active. 🐾🎾
• Training – Focus on teaching your dog what you would like them to do when they’d normally bark. For example, instead of barking at the mailman, show your dog how to grab a toy and play with you! 🎯
• No Punishment 🚫 – Avoid using things like bark collars or punishment-based methods, as these can make your dog fearful or aggressive. Positive reinforcement is always the way to go. ❤️
• HELP – If barking is a welfare concern (e.g. the dog doesn’t have food, water, or shelter), contact the RSPCA. Otherwise, excessive barking concerns are usually managed by local councils. 👮♂️
Remember, dogs only bark to communicate, so if we ignore the cause, it might show up in other behaviours like digging! 🌱
