LAMINITIS
🍀With all the new green feed cropping up, horses can be at risk of developing laminitis. Laminitis is a painful condition of the foot where inflammation occurs between the hoof wall and the pedal bone within the hoof.

🔨😭👎If you’ve ever hit your fingernail with a hammer, or slammed it in a door you might have some idea of what it feels like to have laminitis…Only you don’t have to then stand on it all day!

☠️If not treated, laminitis can lead to founder, where the pedal bone detaches from the hoof wall and can sink or rotate downwards and in very severe cases, even pe*****te through the sole of the hoof. This is a major welfare concern and up to 15% of equine deaths in the UK are linked to laminitis

🧐If you notice any signs of lameness in your equid (horse, pony or donkey!), call the vet out promptly.
More subtle signs of laminitis include:
• Shortened gait
• Lying down more frequently
• Shifting weight between feet while resting

🩺Early, aggressive treatment is more likely to lead to a favourable outcome. Our vets will work with you to diagnose the cause of any lameness and discomfort. We have a range of specialised feeds and feeders suitable for horses and ponies prone to, or suffering from laminitis.

Like most things, prevention is the best cure!

🐴What can you do now, to help your four legged friend avoid a laminitic episode?
• Provide poor quality horse-safe hay 24/7
• Replace high grain formulated diets with low sugar high fibre diets such as Speedibeet, Hygain Zero & Maxisoy
• Use oil in the diet where weight gain is required rather than additional grass or grain feeding
• Use a grazing muzzle to reduce grass consumption
• Limit access to pasture to fewer hours per day
• Consider setting up pastures in a track system to encourage natural movement and hoof health, while reducing overconsumption of new growth grass

Cattle AI... no not the digitized kind!

Our large animal vets are looking to offer cattle AI (artificial insemination!) services with reproductive synchronisation programs this year. Dr. Lauryn started the upskilling required by attending an intensive practical workshop over a few days in Victoria. She then spent 2 days being mentored by an amazing AI technician who performs AI almost year round, mostly on dairy cattle. Dr. Charlie heads off next month to grow the same skills and experience!

It's been a bit frosty lately! 🥶
That means it's time to give your horses their annual drench 🪱🦄

We recommend worm egg count (WEC) testing of your horse's faeces before every other drench except this one. This is the one time of the year (May/June after a good frost) EVERY horse should receive a highly effective drench that includes tapeworm coverage. This is because the frost should have killed active adult bot flies, and we want to wipe out the population inside the horse.

Ask us in clinic for more info or to pick up your "annual drench"

Remember to test your adult horse every 3 months (unless otherwise directed by a veterinarian) to assess their worm burden. Contact us for tailored advice or info for younger horses.

Emma grew up on KI, and has built a clinic in Keith focussed on helping people to strengthen relationships with their pets. Emma is a veterinarian with further qualifications in veterinary behaviour and is also a Delta-certified dog trainer. Emma is passionate about educating pet owners, ensuring that everyone has ready access to the most humane, up-to-date, and scientifically proven training methods. Emma also has experience in diagnosing and treating dogs and cats with behavioural issues, including phobias, anxiety, and aggression.

This Course has been designed by Dr Emma Vermeeren, qualified veterinarian and Delta-certified dog trainer, to be the only dog training and behaviour resource you will need.
Our vet nurse Erin, under the guidance of Dr Emma, will help you turn your unruly puppy into an obedient adolescent throughout the 6 week Course.
The Course consists of:
✅ 4x Weekly practical classes with Erin
✅ Self-paced online modules to enhance what is taught in class
✅ Facebook Support Group
✅ Online live zoom sessions with Dr Emma

There's some theory work to do prior to the practical classes so make sure you enrol ASAP to get started. Places are limited and enrolment is required to confirm your place in the class.

As always, the Online Only Course is available for those that prefer it or cannot make it to the practical classes.

There hasn’t been much grass around for a while on KI for our four legged equine friends. Many of us are handfeeding to ensure they stay healthy and receive the calories they need ☀️ 🐴 🪣

We recently got in a new product that is brilliant for hard feeding and reducing intake of sand, and minimising feed wastage. The plastic tub fits perfectly inside a tyre tube, providing extra weight and stability to prevent it from being tipped over.

Although we can’t 💯 guarantee the effectiveness against all cheeky horses, our vets can vouch for it preventing spilled feed with their own bucket-flipping-pesky-ponies!!
