Caslick procedure – A commonly performed procedure to assist broodmares that have poor vulval conformation. This helps to reduce air/faeces/urine being sucked into the vaginal cavity which can affect the reproductive health of the mare. The caslick procedure may also be performed on performance horse mares who have ‘pneumovagina’ or are heard to be sucking air in when racing/jumping/being ridden.

Tick Season! ⛑️🐴

With all the recent rain and warm weather it is the perfect conditions for Ticks. 🌧️☀️

This is your friendly reminder to remember to check your horses for ticks. Pictured is a gelding came in for dentistry and had a swollen sheath - after investigating we found a rather large tick (swipe to see it circled).

Finding a tick on your horse is not an emergency, but prompt removal of ticks is important to reduce the risk of disease transmission and other complications. Some tick species release a toxin that causes tick paralysis.

Castrations – Is it time to make your c**t two stone lighter? 🐴

If so there are a few things you should keep in mind…
1 - Are both testicles descended?
2 - Choose a time of year when the weather is favourable – dry, cool weather is best. Wet weather and muddy ground can increase your chance of infections.
3 - Choose a large safe paddock to turn your horse out into. This will encourage them to keep moving and reduce the chance of inflammation.

Repost — This is why we do regular dentals! 🦷🪥

A clients Thoroughbred filly was sent to us for some work & we noticed she had some issues with her mouth. Little did we know that she had some huge hooks on her caps that weren’t dislodging & decent hooks on her adult teeth. Safe to say she will be feeling much better after this.

visits us a few times a year for our horses dental needs! 🤗🙌🏼

Dental Day 🤩

Our horses have their teeth done every 6-12 months from when they’re born. All horses (ridden or not ridden) require dentals as they’re considered ‘hypsodont’ animals - their teeth continually erupt & change over during their life.

We are extremely fortunate to have service all of our dental requirements and educate us on our horses requirements🐴

Sometimes owners often think that if their horse isn’t being ridden, they don’t need a dental visit?

This is Incorrect – Any horse that is eating requires a dental. 👩🏻‍⚕️🦷🪥

Why is this? For all the reasons humans go to the dentist PLUS horses are what we call a ‘hypsodont’ animal – this means their teeth continue to erupt over life so are continually moving in relation to each other – this can cause a change in the relationship between teeth and result in issues such as periodontal disease which need to be addressed.

Regular dental checks for all horses, even our smallest patients is important.

Horses are ‘hypsodont’ animal, meaning they are continually changing. A routine dental check will look for any sharp edges/potential issues that horses of all ages and sizes could be experiencing! 🐴

What is going on here? 🦷 👩🏻‍⚕️

In this case the horse had retained deciduous incisors (baby teeth) which were pushing the permanent teeth backwards into the mouth. Often in these cases the retained incisors will require extraction and over time the permanent incisors should move into the correct position.

This mare had a nasty laceration to her right thorax after having an altercation with a fencepost. The wound was thoroughly cleaned and sutured with tension relieving sutures and drains placed. The last photo was taken 1 month after the injury occurred. The wound was cleaned daily and AbbeyShield used to protect the skin from the elements and promote healing.

A case of slant mouth - what is ‘slant mouth’? 🐴🦷

When we look at the horse’s mouth from the front the incisors should appear horizontal. In this case the incisors are clearly on a slant hence the name. This results in the upper incisors being too long and the lower incisors too short on the same side. In this case it was caused as a result of a previously extracted incisor resulting in uneven growth of the incisors. Often there can be quite severe cheek teeth problems. Correction of the slant bite is performed by reducing the overgrowth until the bite is level. Careful monitoring during reduction is essential so the pulp cavity is not exposed.

Part 2 of our Question post:

If you guessed an extra tooth, then you are correct! Also known as a supernumerary tooth. These teeth need to be monitored throughout the life of the horse at regular intervals. These unopposed molars result in overgrowth of the tooth if not reduced and can also cause significant periodontal disease. In some cases, extraction is required.

Part 1: 🦷🐴An interesting case we saw a few months ago - a 7yo WB mare presented for dental examination.

This case highlights the importance of a thorough oral examination … horses usually have 4 premolars (the first being the wolf tooth if present) and 3 molars - can you guess what is going on in this photo?

Case Study; 5 yr old WB mare

A 5yo mare presented for routine dental exam with a history of some resistance to the bit. Visual oral exam was normal however a blind (not visible) wolf tooth could be palpated on the right maxilla pushing against the gum where the bit would sit. X-ray confirmed the presence of the blind wolf tooth, and the tooth was extracted.
