When you call Station Street Veterinary Clinic to book in your large animals for a veterinary farm visit, one of the first questions our team will ask is, if you have safe small secure yard for sheep, goats, alpacas and a cattle crush for cattle? This is so we can safely assess and treat your animals all whilst keeping our veterinarians and nurses as safe as possible when out in the field. We all know working with animals poses many hazards, but we are all obligated both the business & client’s to do the best we can to minimise the risks. Work safe and agriculture Victoria have recently published information about cattle crushes, follow the link to see if yours passes recommended standards.

Tune up for safety in your cattle yards this Spring - make sure you’re by completing WorkSafe Victoria’s cattle farm safety checklist.
The checklist helps to identify key areas that can be improved:
✅ Yarding
✅ Gates and latches
✅ Surfaces
✅ Mustering
✅ Crushes
✅ Livestock loading
✅ Drafting
Keep yourself, your family, and your workers safe and well – know how to manage the risks.

Are you planning on heading away over the Melbourne Cup long weekend or over the Christmas and New Years summer holidays?

If you are planning on placing your fur kids into boarding kennels or a cattery, they usually require them to be fully vaccinated at least 2 weeks in advance of dropping them off. Boarding kennels and catteries may refuse to take your pet if they have lapsed from their vaccination course which could affect your holiday plans.

To ensure your pets are fully immunised, Make sure your pets are up to date with their vaccinations, book in with us today - appointments available Ph 5997 2222 or book online.

2024 VETERINARY NURSE & TECHNOLOGIST AWARENESS WEEK 🫶🫂

🎉Celebrating all the ways we make a difference🎉

This week is about celebrating the impactful work of Veterinary Nurses & Technologists and bringing awareness to the diverse roles, talents, skills and knowledge that they possess that make a difference to patients, clients, colleagues and the wider community!

💚OUR NURSES💚

As a genuine mixed practice, our team of nurses have a diverse role, working with domestic pets, livestock and wildlife!

They do a lot of work behind the scenes:

- Maintaining clinic cleanliness and infection control
- Ensuring that the clinic is stocked with supplies
- Cleaning, sterilising and maintenance of equipment
- Assisting clients with inquiries, ordering medication, providing estimates and offering support, advice and education
- Triage and scheduling to ensure that your pet gets seen in a timely manner
- Surgical nursing (theatre set-up, surgical site preparation, anaesthetic monitoring, post-op recovery, admissions and discharges)
- Pathology including blood collection and running in-house diagnostics
- In-patient monitoring and care including IV catheter placement, IV fluid set-up and maintenance, administering medication, patient comfort and hygiene
- Emergency and critical care
- Radiography
- Grooming
- Deceased aftercare

Their role can be physically, mentally and emotionally taxing, sometimes dangerous, regularly demands working overtime and often doesn't stop when you clock-off.

So THANK YOU to our nurses for your hard work, sacrifice and dedication!

‼️⚠️SNAKES ARE EMERGING!
.and so are snake bite cases.

WE ARE EQUIPPED WITH ANTIVENOM 🐍

Your pet may only be displaying mild symptoms, seeming 'a little bit off' but may have received a fatal dose of envenomation.
Some pets can seem perfectly normal right up until they collapse and die suddenly.

If you have ANY suspicion that your pet could have encountered a snake, seek veterinary attention IMMEDIATELY - early intervention can mean the difference between LIFE OR DEATH for your pet.

Symptoms may include:
- sudden onset of weakness/wobbliness/loose and floppy limbs
- tenderness, pain on movement
- paralysis
- tremors/shaking
- dilated/non-responsive pupils, reduced eye blinking
- respiratory distress
- vomiting
- lethargy
- salivation/drooling
- pale or purple gum colour
- excessive panting, restlessness, pacing
- incontinence
- red to black coloured urine
- sudden collapse with or without apparent recovery
- bleeding
- protrusion of the tongue, not moving, inappetence (in cats)

IF YOUR PET IS UNCONCIOUS:

Our nurses are CPR trained and can assist over the phone until you arrive at the clinic.

ON THE WAY TO THE CLINIC:

- call ahead
- carry your pet/discourage movement and keep them calm
- remove collars or constricting items from the bite area

BITE PREVENTION:

- keep scrubby/bushy areas cleared and pruned
- keep lawns mowed
- remove potential food sources for rodents
- be mindful of hiding spots/clear away what you can: sheets of corrugated metal, porches, empty pot plant pots, shoes left outside, sheds, fencing, piles of wood/junk etc.
- avoid walking your dogs in long grass, near feed storage inc. horse stables and chicken coops and along waterways and don't let them off lead in bushy areas (stick to designated foot paths)
- walk in the cool of the morning
- consider snake-proof fencing
- look into snake avoidance training for your dog

The team at SSVC recently welcomed a new member!
Michelle (Chelle) has joined us in a new role as Human Resources Manager.
Michelle will be looking after our team and overseeing their professional and personal development, whilst supporting both individual team members and the clinic collectively to uphold our core values - to look after people and animals and to continuously challenge and evolve.
You can find out a bit more about Michelle in the caption.
Please give her a warm welcome🙂!

Michelle George (Chelle)
HR Manager
Certificate in Veterinary Nursing, BBus Mktg/HR, Master of Human Resource Management (Distinction)

Michelle joined SSVC as the Human Resources Manager in 2024 with an extensive background in the Veterinary Industry spanning over 34 years. Michelle’s special interest, apart from animals, is ensuring that the team members in veterinary practice are looked after and have every opportunity for professional and personal development.

Her career in the veterinary industry began as a nurse at Korumburra-Kooweerup Veterinary clinics, moving into practice management in 2007 and business ownership in 2016. During this time, Michelle completed her Certificate in Veterinary Nursing in 1997, a Bachelor of Business in 2015 and a Master of Human Resource Management in
2022.

After a short time away from the veterinary industry, Michelle managed an allied health clinic in Leongatha but was missing the patient and client contact within veterinary clinics. She felt her passion and experience for the veterinary clinic setting could be better utilised with the SSVC team as her values resonated with SSVC to look after people and animals and to continuously challenge and evolve.

Michelle has a daughter who is completing university in Melbourne, and she shares her home with her partner, Paul, a Golden Retriever, Dolly, a Burmese cat, Yoshi, a Siamese x, Delphine and 3 horses. When not spending time with her partner sign writing, Michelle can be found on the speedway track racing a standard saloon at local tracks such as Nyora, Drouin, Rosedale and Bairnsdale.
