Puppy time last Sunday at Koo wee K9 Bootcamp!

Do you have a reactive dog?
Do you have a timid nervous dog?
Is your dog over the top and a bit of a pain?
Do you just want to to do something that is fun for you and your dog?

Have you heard about Noseworks also known as Scent Work, it’s similar to what the dogs do at the airport except we don’t use drugs. We teach them to find what we call a “target odour” but we can eventually teach them to find your keys or phone if you want.

You don’t need to have an obedient dog either, because it’s all about the dogs having fun and doing what makes them happy.
Your dog needs to be able to settle in the car though, if you think your dog won’t settle we also offer private Nosework classes, please contact us directly to organise some private Nosework training.

Here is a short video of my pup, Pumpkin searching, she hadn’t been doing this for long in this video but look at how happy she is , she just thinks this is the best thing. And the best thing is she was tired after a couple of searches like this. That’s another benefit of Noseworks.

The next Foundation course starts on Wednesday August 28 at 1pm at KCC Park.
You start with a 6 week Foundation course. This course introduces your dog to searching and hunting, it’s surprising how many dogs can’t go off and search independently,

We will introduce your dog to a target odour, usually Clove in the last couple of weeks of the Foundation course.
If you decide to continue the next step will be to complete our 4 week Building Odour course, this is the course where we will work on building your dogs drive to odour so they can find the target odour with some distractions in the search area. The Building Odour course will only go ahead of there is sufficient numbers.
Once you’ve completed the Building Odour course you can then attend our Continuing classes.

Here’s a video showing Pumpkins progress during the Mantrailing workshop last weekend. Neither Pumpkin nor I had done this before.
She was to find the person hiding in the grass or behind a tree, at first she was trying to see where they went but then on the third day realised she could find them if she used her nose. Pumpkin competes in Nosework/Scent Work trials so she knows how to use her nose but this was different for her so she had to work out what would get her the reward.
As you can see at the end of the video she certainly worked out what she was supposed to do.

We canceled training last Sunday because I was away for the weekend learning some new skills, hopefully we can bring these to you in the near future.
I was at a Mantrailing workshop, it’s similar to where the search and rescue dogs find lost people in the bush. A person is lost and the dog is sent out to try and find them.
My dog Pumpkin does scent work but has never done tracking or Mantrailing. It took a couple of days for Pumpkin to work out what the game was all about, I’ve always insisted she doesn’t pull on the collar so she was reluctant to pull on the lead, but I put a harness on her, which she doesn’t normally like and this helped with her pulling into the lead, she also doesn’t like to go too far away from me which was stopping her from going away and finding the person. Pumpkin is deaf so i effectively have no recall either so I had to also have the confidence she knew she was to find the person and not just run off and have fun chasing sheep or rabbits.
Guy came along for the ride too. He hasn’t been out for a while. Here’s some pics, I have some videos which I will post once I work technology out.

Dog training isn‘t always about sits, drops and stands. The more you can vary your training the better it will be for both you and your dog. In the Control/Advanced classes we work on many different skills from working under distraction to working away from your dog, hand signals and out of sight commands. We also like to incorporate some extra skills, it’s all about the connection with your dog and having fun at the same time.

NOSE WORK/SCENT WORK BLOCK 1 SATURDAY MAY 11, @ 2pm Winter is coming and Scent Work is a great way to burn energy when you can’t walk your dog. No obedience required. The Getting Started with Nose Work/ Scent Work Block 1 course is a fantastic opportunity to engage in a fun and rewarding activity with your dog. The flexibility of Nose Work makes it accessible for many dog owners, with emphasis on independence and confidence-building. Nose work is a versatile game that can be enjoyed by you and your dog almost anywhere, requiring minimal equipment. It's reassuring to know that the classes are run by a qualified trainer certified through reputable organizations like the NDTF and NACSW USA. Block 1 of the Getting Started with Nose Work/ Scent Work course focuses on teaching your dog independent searching and hunting skills. Learning to "read" your dog's behaviour as they approach the target odour (food) is a key aspect of the training. By using food or your dog's favourite toy, you'll observe various changes in behaviour, such as increased speed, slowed pace, ear positioning, or tail wagging, indicating their proximity to the scent. This foundational understanding enhances your ability to support your dog's learning and builds a strong bond between you both. This could be a great option for dog owners who are unable to commit to a longer course but still want to participate in this growing sport with their furry companions.
