🚨 Education Post! This is a judgement and shame free zone🚨
I want to start by praising this owner for reaching out for help despite their personal circumstances! We are always willing to help and we never judge as we understand life happens to all of us, regardless of if it is tragic, physical, mental or financial hurdles we are always here to help. We love you and your pets!
This big beautiful boy came in to see me this week following some tragic family changes. We often see a large amount of matted dogs, this 10 year old Maremma took just over 4 hours with plenty of relax breaks to get through his pelted coat.
What is a pelted coat? Pelting is a condition that happens when a dog’s fur is so matted and tangled that it has to come off in one piece. It also pulls on the skin and doesn’t allow air to flow through. This can also increase your pets risk of skin infections and unknown sores. It is quiet common to find trapped poop, urine, plant matter, mud and food in the coat.
Why do we shave rather then brush it out? Simple the skin is so tightly fused to the coat that brushing or hand stripping the coat would be torture, it is kinder and healthier to shave off the coat and begin the dog on a recovery plan.
What are the risks of shaving a pelted coat? Unfortunately as the coat is released from the skin it can lead to Itchy, irritated skin, cuts, scrapes, sores, and bruises. While we always take care in these circumstances we can not always tell you how your dogs skin will react.
How to avoid it? Regular deep brushing and a 4 to 6 week grooming cycle is recommended to avoid any matting and pelting. Over the coming weeks we will be sharing our tips and tricks for brushing your beloved pooch.
That is officially a wrap folks!
🌲We want to thank you all for amazing support and we wish you all an extremely safe and happy Christmas🎄
Now to enjoy a few days with our beautiful children and we will see you back on the 27th for grooming and pet food needs.
