Warm weather is worriesome for brachys
😬
Due to their squishy face shape dogs such as pugs, bulldogs, boxers and staffies are prone to heat stress, which can become fatal if not managed quickly.
😕
Signs of heat stress include:
- heavy panting
- frothing at the mouth
- noisy breathing
- collapse
- diarrhoea/vomiting
- deep red or even blue gums

You can prevent heat stress by keeping these pets inside with an air conditioner on hot days, walking early morning or late evening, keeping them slim and having airway surgery performed to improve their natural defenses.

If you would like to know more about airway surgery please make an appointment to speak with our vets in Koroit on 5559 0260.

It's that time of year for the "danger noodles" to emerge...
The best treatment of course is prevention - clean up the woodpiles, keep your pets away from long grass and walk on lead in high risk areas.
🐍
Signs to look for:
- sudden collapse
- vomit
- walking as though they are drunk

If you do suspect your pet has been bitten by a snake please call our Warrnambool clinic on 5559 0222 straight away.
Keep your pet calm and still while travelling to the clinic and don't try to catch the snake for us - our antivenene covers all types!

LarPar?? What is it and why should I be worried now?
😕
Lar Par or Laryngeal Paralysis is a common disorder in middle aged and older large breed dogs, particularly Labradors. Affected dogs are unable to open their airway (voice box) effectively and are at risk of respiratory distress.
🦮
This is more common in warm and humid weather and we often see dogs present collapsed after walking in the early Spring season, before they have acclimatised to the weather change.
🌞
Signs of lar par include:
- cough/gag
- excessive panting
- noisy breathing
- reduced exercise tolerance

Mild cases can be managed with weight loss, reduced exercise, avoiding hot or humid weather and using a harness.
As the disease progresses with age further intervention may be warranted, including surgery.

So as the weather warms up, watch your pet's exercise carefully and build up slowly if they have been resting up over winter.

If you think your pet may have signs of Lar Par book in to discuss diagnosis and treatment options with our vets. Call 5559 0260 to make an appointment

"Feeling unsure if it's 'time'? Did you know our vets offer quality of life assessments?

These provide an objective view of your pet's daily activities and gauge their happiness that you can use to monitor for change.

During this appointment, we can explore treatment options to enhance your pet's life because aging doesn't have to mean suffering.

Better still these assessments can be done at home, allowing us to better understand their situation and make the best recommendations." 🌟🐾

Hi, it's Di, the Receptionist from the Koroit Clinic. I wanted to introduce you all to Mia, our 9-year-old Swiss (German) Shepherd. About two weeks ago, we noticed a concerning sore/lump on the top part of her hind leg. Initially, we thought it was just a hotspot and weren't overly worried. However, as it didn't improve and began to worsen, we scheduled an appointment with Dr. Katie for a closer look.

Dr. Katie immediately expressed concern and swiftly arranged for Mia to undergo surgery the following day. Dr. Mel performed the surgery, and upon examining the lump under the microscope, she and Dr. Katie suspect it might be malignant. This is a reminder of the importance of booking in and promptly investigating any unusual lumps or sores on our pets as soon as you discover them.

Mia is recovering remarkably well just two days post-surgery and isn't showing any signs of discomfort. We sent the lump of for Histopathology and we're awaiting the results when her stitches are removed and hoping for good news regarding the margins Dr. Mel was able to achieve. Our fingers are crossed for Mia's continued recovery.

Meet the team Monday!
We are proud to (re)introduce Dr. Bec, a highly experienced veterinarian with a passion for flexible and preventative care. With 20 years of experience and 17 years at our clinic, Dr Bec is excited to bring a thorough and flexible veterinary care to the vibrant community of Koroit.

She has a unique and evolving set of passions with qualifications in Dairy Medicine and (Human) Wellbeing and is currently increasing her knowledge of palliative care. Preferring to prevent than treat disease, she aims to give your pets their best life.

Outside of work she loves to get involved in her community. She caught the travel bug after a family adventure around Australia last year, so she is off this week to warmer climes and will see everyone again Mid-July!

Brrr - it's cold outside!
In Winter we often see our older pets increasingly suffer signs of arthritis and joint pain.
Keeping them warm at night can help ease some symptoms.
Ideas include wearing a jacket, thick soft bedding and moving them indoors.
If your pet is showing signs of pain - sleeping more, shorter walks, difficulty getting up and down or limping - make an appointment with our knowledgeable vets to discuss treatment options.

It's been a month now since we installed our in house lab and we have been excited to provide same day results to our patients.
Wondering what can we test?
We offer:
- wellness and senior pet testing - great for detecting problems early, before they may be showing obvious signs.
- Sick pets to establish if they need to travel to our hospital in Warrnambool.
- Chronic disease monitoring can also be performed in house and in some cases with same day results.
- Urinalysis
- Cytology of lumps, ear and skin infections
Unsure if we can perform the test you need, simply call us or call in to discuss.
