BREEDING - The highs and lows
Looking from the outside breeding looks easy, it’s not, far from it.
We started about 14 years ago and happily went along for 10 years without too much going wrong.
The last couple of years have been devastating. We lost a couple of foals, I had one die in my arms, with me telling her it was okay to go, that just about broke me. I had a very special connection to her. We had another that we lost from heat stoke, whereas the other foals were fine, maybe she just wasn’t quite right. We had sold her so then we had to ring the buyer and let her know.
This year we lost 2 of our stallions, Ridge and Tyko. I still am coming to terms with this. It is devastating I can tell you. I still look into their paddocks looking form them. Sometimes I wonder why we keep going.
My heart goes out to everyone who have lost horses this year. My thoughts are with you all and may 2025 be a better year.
But then you have the highs. We have had a few breeders breeding Windenvale to Windenvale horses and the foals have been spectacular, exactly what I was hoping for. So I think we are doing something right with our stud. We bred Nutmeg to Tyko and we got Madden, he is everything I had hoped for, except he is not homozygous silver, but I am over the moon with him. He will carry on Tyko’s legacy.
I am really happy with the foals we have bred and hope to continue.
We also have bred the first silver pearl for Australia and the first Pearl Buckskins, so we are very proud of that.
