KANE Inc. Domestic Pets & Wildlife Rehabilitation in the East Kimberley & Animal adoption program. Supported by the Kimberley Vet Centre.

KANE Inc is a non-profit organisation and group of dedicated volunteers who provide care and rehabilitation for all creatures in the East Kimberley. Our group is based at the Kimberley Vet Centre (KVC) in Kununurra, they provide the initial primary assessment of all rescued & abandoned domestic animals and wildlife. Puppy’s and Kittens are then placed with Foster carers until they can be adopted.

Wildlife is also passed on to carers until rehabilitated and ready for release. We often receive both domestic and Wildlife from the Northern Territory, and throughout the Kimberley region from Halls Creek, Fitzroy Crossing and even from as far as Broome. We educate the public about threatening processes such as Ecanis, Cane Toads and the protection of our unique native species, and so much more. Our major threat at the moment is: Ehrlichia

It is a genus of Rickettsiales bacteria that is transmitted to vertebrates by ticks. This bacteria causes the disease ehrlichiosis, which is considered zoonotic, because the main reservoirs for the disease are animals. This can be life threatening if not treated. For more info

Indi ✨🩷🐾

Did you meet Indi on our Cat Open Day last week? If you did, you can surely vouch for her delightfully playful nature.

She was dubbed 'Indi' because of her initially independent nature upon admission - but she's since flowered in foster care into a playful and fun young lady.

Indi is an adult female, and scheduled to fly down to a Perth rescue in April where she'll have better chances of adoption - but if you'd like to give her a chance here in Kununurra, please reach out to us 😊

Paws & Paint 🎨 😍 🐾

Join us this Saturday for an afternoon of laughter and fun - create a masterpiece inspired by the works of Pet Portraits By Hercule while a dozen kittens run around at your feet! We will have all our young kittens currently available for adoption on scene - it's up to you whether you lie back and relax with some kitten therapy or spend your time awakening your inner artist!

When: this Saturday the 29th of March, 2:30pm - 3:30pm
Where: Neighbourhood House
Fee: $30 per person which includes all art supplies, a frame to honour your favourite creation, and endless kitten cuddles!

It's going to be a cruisy and relaxing day suitable for all abilities and ages - local superstar artist Jeanne Barnes will also be on the loose sharing her expertise!

Get ready for the week ahead by charging up with a yoga class for all abilities.... featuring a dozen kittens running amok! Master your downward kitten and cat pose and let yourself sink into relaxation.

Cats and dogs aren't all we rescue!

This python was brought to us by a member of the public after it was found stuck in some chicken wire! Luckily it only ended up with minor bruising, and in fact was feeling so well that it self-released (escaped) from our clinic snake enclosure after 2 days. Oopsie!

Announcing... PAWPULATION CONTROL! ✂️🍒

We want to fight the cat overpopulation crisis by getting to the root of the problem... cats rooting!

Initiated by a member of KANE, the trial program offered FREE cat desexing to owned and stray cats alike, and has so far been a success with 7 cats desexed and nearly $3000 raised to cover the associated vet costs - and we have 6 more cats on the waitlist!

We're excited to welcome the program officially under the KANE banner, offering free cat sterilisation to all that need it within Kununurra. We're aiming to target cats that won't otherwise be desexed or euthanised - those at risk of having kittens and continuing the tragic and deadly cycle of over-breeding. Dozens of felines are euthanised in Kununurra every year - there are so many lovely affectionate kittens but not enough homes to house them.

All are welcome to apply to receive financial assistance to desex a cat - no proof of ownership is required: meaning yes, you can grab the cat nesting in your boat; the cat on your doorstep; the stray hanging around your workplace.

This program is currently funded entirely by public donations, but we do hope to secure some grants in the future. To keep it alive, please consider donating via the GoFundMe linked below. We can only desex as many cats as we can fundraise for, so a waitlist exists while we wait for sufficient funds!

Do you need some CRAZY in your life?

Zimba is a delightful medium sized dog who has endless zest for life. She's looking for an active household that can facilitate daily adventures and fun - with a taste of chaos!

She'd be the perfect waterfall adventure dog, farm dog, or jogging companion. She loves the company of other dogs, but has also done well in human-only households - she's also great with kids (maintaining they can keep up with her energy!).

Zimba also has a calm and affectionate side - she'll stay right at your hip and gaze lovingly into your eyes all day long if she could!

This is the face of a RASCAL!

Daphne has failed her initiation as our clinic cat after whacking two dogs and making a child cry on her first day.

Daphne argues that the other party started it, but regardless we would prefer not to have any more dogs whacked.

Saying all that, she is a lovely cat and will make a family very happy - she's very social and playful, and loves kids, cats, and dogs (despite the above incidents, we promise they were exceptional circumstances and the other parties DID in fact start it!)

Are you excited for our Open Day tomorrow?

We will have tons of friendly kittens available to snuggle, and best of all - there's the option to take one (or two!) home at the end of the day! Come join us at 10 Leichhardt Street between 9am and 2pm.

Kittens are so much fun, but please take this moment to acknowledge some of the older cats we have in care at the moment, that are equally deserving of our love and affections!

- Daisy and Luna are a bonded pair who we admitted when they were 6 weeks old - now they're 6 months old! 😭
- Jo is a newer admit, a lovely 6 month old sweetheart who loves the company of other cats and friends.
- Peaches is a mature adult who was meant to fly to Perth, but her flight was one of those cancelled. Life's a peach! She's exceptionally cuddly and great with other cats.
- Abby is a mature tabby female, the loveliest girl around! She has surrogate fed most of the kittens in tomorrow!
- Daphne is a teenage mother to two boys who have since been adopted, and now she's looking for somewhere to call her own! She's super playful and friendly, and loves other cats and dogs.
- Molly is an adolescent female, who can be quite shy. Once she's out of her shell, she's super lovely, affectionate, and playful.

KANE needs some volunteers so we can make the Open Day happen on Sunday! It's from 9am to 2pm and you get a complimentary mango smoothie. And like, you get to cuddle me! We just need one person in each room to make sure none of us get up to any funny business. Make sure to message the KANE mob here if you can help out - even for a couple of hours!
