KANE Inc.

KANE Inc. Domestic Pets & Wildlife Rehabilitation in the East Kimberley & Animal adoption program. Supported by the Kimberley Vet Centre.

KANE Inc is a non-profit organisation and group of dedicated volunteers who provide care and rehabilitation for all creatures in the East Kimberley. Our group is based at the Kimberley Vet Centre (KVC) in Kununurra, they provide the initial primary assessment of all rescued & abandoned domestic animals and wildlife. Puppy’s and Kittens are then placed with Foster carers until they can be adopted.

Wildlife is also passed on to carers until rehabilitated and ready for release. We often receive both domestic and Wildlife from the Northern Territory, and throughout the Kimberley region from Halls Creek, Fitzroy Crossing and even from as far as Broome. We educate the public about threatening processes such as Ecanis, Cane Toads and the protection of our unique native species, and so much more. Our major threat at the moment is: Ehrlichia

It is a genus of Rickettsiales bacteria that is transmitted to vertebrates by ticks. This bacteria causes the disease ehrlichiosis, which is considered zoonotic, because the main reservoirs for the disease are animals. This can be life threatening if not treated. For more info

Louise update 🐾 ❀️

Louise is doing exceptionally well, and we're glad to report that we've raised $1300 so far and are all in for surgery this weekend!

Little Louise is being an absolute soldier and you truly wouldn't realise anything is wrong with her - she's still the playful, delightful little creature she was before the accident.

The bruising and swelling on her abdomen is slowly going down and it looks like we'll have a seamless surgery ahead on Saturday.

All our foster carers are going away over the school holidays! We need new fosters for:

- Daphne (adult tortie) indefinitely
- Wild Mocha (kitten tortie)
- And these three who were brought in today! All 3 are boys - 'Calf', 'Eagle', 'Lion' - and can be kept together.

Please call 9169 1229 or message here!

Ringworm might sound scary, but it's truly not! (just a pain in the bum!).

A lot of our fosters start out with ringworm because their immune system is so battered after being out on the streets. Our preferred treatment is simply topical diluted betadine but specialised creams and medications can also be used in worse cases 🀩

A cat so chilled out we thought she was deaf 😳 πŸ€” πŸ‘‚

We've figured out the reason nobody wants to foster Abby... they are too afraid they'll fall in love with her! This girl is just the most gorgeous little creature, and she just wants one thing in the world: to be close to you.

This cat is childproof through and through. She's super gentle and never brings out her claws, and she's tolerant of everything! We have genuinely been questioning if she was deaf because she didn't seem to react to ANY sounds in the house - claps, whistles, general chaos - she's always able to turn a blind eye and carry on with her nap.

The only sound she comes to is the ti**le of biscuits falling into her food bowl. Your scam is up, Abby, we know you can hear us!

Her only possible flaw is her lack of recall - but don't you worry, as she'll make her way to you in her own time and snuggle up suffocatingly close.

PLEASE come and visit Abby today... she really needs some cuddles πŸ₯Ί And maybe you can take her home?!?

Well everyone.... this is NOT how we wanted you to meet our newest admit, Louise.

Louise (and her sister Thelma) came to us from the streets in poorly condition, but in foster care they have been winning over hearts and thriving.
.. until now.

Louise, the tiny thing she is, was accidentally backed over by a car on Saturday, and sustained a broken leg as well as terrifying internal injuries.

She came in collapsed and going between consciousness and distress, and we really thought we were going to lose her πŸ˜”. She was super pale and struggling to breathe, and we feared the worst - that she was bleeding internally and there was nothing we could do to stop it.

After pain relief and oxygen therapy, by some miracle Louise started to improve and was able to lift her head and look at us.

We performed X-rays and blood tests which confirmed she was bleeding internally and had a badly broken leg, but luckily the bleeding was beginning to resolve on its own.

The broken leg however, will need more than a miracle - she needs a surgery worth $1500, and on top of her emergency fees from Saturday, that's a whopping $2500 we're looking at! 😭

The only alternative is euthanasia, so we're really hoping we can fundraise enough. Her surgery is booked for this Saturday.

We anticipate for the surgery to go smoothly, after which she should be able to return to a normal quality of life and be adopted out. We will accept adoption interest for her now, but she won't be available for an adoption trial until she is fully healed.

Please consider sharing or donating if you are able - all donations over $2 are tax deductible.

How are our wildlife stats going this year?

So far, we've admitted 21 injured or orphaned wildlife, of which 10 were euthanised or died, and 11 were released.

With the storms of the wet season came many baby birds who had fallen from their nests. We've had a range of feathered friends this year, ranging from the standard peewees and doves, to mannikin finches and yellow tinted honeyeaters, which were a new experience for our younger nurses. Wild birds can be flimsy things to raise (especially considering they've fallen from metres and metres above!), and we are so proud of our nurses and volunteers for their resilience and perseverance.

This little fledgeling honeyeater was doing well in care, and had been self-feeding for a week or two before it self-released from the aviary one morning! We haven't seen it since but we hope our little friend is doing well with all the flowers in abundance in this fine weather 🌺🌸🌼

We thought you all might like an insight to just how busy we've been this year!

Here's a picture of the total number of cat and dog admissions we've had, year by year, since 2018.

On average, 90 domestic animals are admitted for rehabilitation and rehoming per year.

This year, in just three months, we've had 51 admissions - yes, FIFTY ONE.

While overwhelming, this is GOOD NEWS - our volunteers have been working exceptionally hard this year to save more animals than ever, with goals to turn down as few animals as possible from the pound and members of the public.

Unfortunately, these numbers are likely to be unsustainable, so we really need to bunker down and prevent unwanted pregnancies and increase education around sterilisation and responsible pet ownership.

This is Wild Mocha and isn't she delicious?! 😍

She was one of the 20 kittens we admitted within one week, and while the majority have somehow managed to find their feet in forever homes, Mocha is still waiting for a family to reach out and adopt her πŸ₯Ή

She's a terrific little lady, who is now about 7 weeks old. She's proven to be fabulous with dogs, cats, and children, and is SUPER cuddly and affectionate - seriously, she's just gorgeous! As the name suggests, she's also got a playful wild side (as all kittens do!) and is sure to guarantee you a lifetime of laughter and fun.

Did you know we offer a one week trial with any of our animals - so you get to take them home first before committing to their adoption fee? If you'd like to meet Wild Mocha and give her a go, please contact us!

Our Paws & Paint was the perfect way to wind down on Saturday afternoon - boy there were some wonderful masterpieces created!

Jeanne Barnes Artist led the class and guided everyone to create a caricature of their beloved pet, inspired by the delightful Pet Portraits By Hercule. The kittens lounged around during this session - exhausted from yoga - which made for the cutest cuddles!! Here are our favourite captures of the day 🐾

Our favourite moments from Kitten Yoga on Saturday!

To say we had the best time is an absolute understatement - Claire's instructing was purrfect and all the kittens instantly gravitated towards her peaceful and calm presence. The yoga was also at the perfect difficulty, and everybody, young and old, had a wonderful time!

It was classic to be relaxing into a pose with our eyes closed - only to hear giggling from someone behind and know that a kitten was crawling all over them!

Our Kitten Yoga and Paws & Paint were an AMAZING success, thank you to everyone that made it and helped us fundraise over $1000! It ended up being a fantastic turnout and kittens and humans alike had a fabulous time.

Cute pictures incoming soon, but first we'd like to acknowledge all of our amazing volunteers and supporters who made it all happen!

- Jeanne Barnes Artist for guiding our Paws & Paint
- Claire for guiding our Kitten Yoga
- Eloise from The Kimberley General Store for applying a discount for our materials
- Tayla, Bridget, Taylah, and Yolanda for setting up and packing away our event (and doing the hard work of supervising kittens at play!)
- All our foster carers who put time aside to come in and drop off their foster kittens for the day, and pick them up afterwards.

Seriously, we mean it when we say we would be NOTHING without our volunteers and foster carers - we are so incredibly grateful beyond words!

PUT YOUR HANDS UP!

This little male kitten was found at the police station today. Is he yours? Please contact either ourselves or SWEK.

We think the police station needs an office cat - he was so at home there! Maybe if we make enough noise we can convince them to keep him 😍

Comment 'πŸˆβ€β¬›' below if they should keep him!
