Calais - 8 week old female tortoiseshell

My name is Calais, you may wonder where my name comes from, well i was a very lucky girl to be found in a kind gentleman's car engine at 6 weeks of age. I was very lucky when found, to have no burns or injuries. I was then brought into Challenger Vets where I have been in my foster mums care for 2 weeks.

I was very scared and and a little hissy at first but I've been in the loving care multiple children and my foster mums cats have shown me how to live and love life. I didn't really like my foster mums dogs but after a nice slow introduction I got used to them.

I love all my food that I get given and love my favourite treats of tuna and chicken. I will entertain you for hours on end when given toys and will happily take any you will give me.

PARVO ALERT: CONFIRMED PARVOVIRUS CASE IN THE KWINANA AREA

Is your dog up to date with their vaccinations?
Parvovirus in dogs, also known as Parvo, is a highly contagious disease that affects puppies that are still too young to be vaccinated, puppies who have not completed their vaccination course and unvaccinated or overdue adult dogs.
What does parvovirus do?
The virus attacks the lining of the small intestine, leading to severe vomiting and diarrhoea, often with blood. This can cause severe dehydration, shock and death, especially in small dogs and puppies. The destruction of the gut lining by parvovirus is so severe that it takes several days for the gut to retain its’ function in digestion and water balance. At the same time the virus also attacks the bone marrow. The damaged bone marrow can no longer produce enough white blood cells needed to fight off infections, and this makes the disease even more serious. In some cases the virus can also affect the heart resulting in inflammation and this is usually fatal.
How do dogs contract parvovirus?
Parvovirus is highly contagious and can survive for long periods in the environment. The virus can withstand routine cleaning and weather changes, which means the spread of the virus is hard to control. It can be easily transferred on the paws of dogs and on people’s shoes or other items contaminated with the virus, like bedding or leashes. Parvovirus is shed in the faeces of infected animals, and dogs easily come into contact with these when sniffing the ground when on walks or at the dog park. It is important to understand that you don’t need direct dog-to-dog contact for a dog to become infected with parvovirus and it can live in the environment for up to two years.
How to prevent parvovirus in dogs
Vaccinating your pet against parvovirus is the only way to protect them from the disease. The vaccination is highly effective and very safe. Puppies require vaccination based on the following:
Vaccination Schedule:
Initial vaccine at 6 to 8 weeks of age
Booster vaccine at 10 to 12 weeks old
Booster vaccine at 14 to 16 weeks old
Annual vaccinations for adults
Remember, your puppy will not have full immunity against the virus until two weeks after their final puppy vaccine.
Don’t walk puppies in parks and outside your home until they receive their full complement of puppy vaccines
How is parvovirus treated?
If parvovirus is suspected based on the clinical signs we will perform a test to confirm infection.
Signs of parvovirus infection progress rapidly, and the disease can be fatal within 48 hours if not treated. Treatment requires intensive hospitalisation with supportive care including intravenous fluids, antibiotics, pain relief and medications to stop vomiting. In some instances, puppies may require more intense critical care treatment including plasma or blood transfusions. Even with intensive treatment some dogs may succumb to this horrible disease.

Forrest has the sweetest little personality and is very content to just sit in your arms or to be around you. Is a little food fiend when it is dinner time and comes running when he hears the food bowls move.

Little Forrest does have a little imperfection to his right eye that makes him a little cross eyed. This does not bother or seem to have any effect on Forrest’s vision or ability to play just makes him even more adorable!

🎄🐾 Pet Safety This Christmas!🎄🐾

As we indulge in festive treats this holiday season, it's essential to remember that not all human Christmas goodies are suitable for pets.

Here are a few treats to avoid:

🍫 Chocolate: A classic festive treat for us, but it’s toxic to dogs and cats. Even small amounts can cause liver damage and serious health issues.

🍇Grapes and Raisins: These can lead to kidney failure in pets. Keep the fruitcake and mince pies well out of reach!!

🧄Onions and Garlic: Often found in many holiday dishes, these can damage your pet's red blood cells, leading to anaemia.

🌰 Nuts: Some nuts, like macadamia nuts, can be harmful to dogs.

🍷Alcohol: Even a small sip can be dangerous for pets. Make sure glasses are out of reach!

This Christmas, let’s keep our celebrations safe and joyful for all members of the family, including our pets! 🐶🐱❤️

These 3 girls and their mum were found up inside a roof when the little ones were only 3 weeks of age. We swiftly got mum and bubs into one of our amazing foster carers and they have absolutely blossomed into the lovey little ladies they are today. Mum will be going up for adoption soon :)

Meet Abbie – 8 week old tabby female

Little Abbie is the first one to great you in the morning and happily chirps at you while twining around your legs. Adores her soft little toys that she can smack around and carry all over her play pen, even becomes possessive when her sisters try and take the toys from her!

She is the sweetest little kitten who adores getting belly rubs Loves to explore everywhere she can get her little paws to while her sisters are more content to play wrestle.

She is a little bit shy at first and tends to follow her sisters leads but once she is comfortable her little mischievous side starts to show. Absolutely loves climbing all over her scratching post and likes to be perched up high.
Very happy and content to play quietly with any toys that you give her until her zoomies kick in and she chases her toys once she smacks them away.

This young man is a little fur covered torpedo, everything is a toy and his to play with but absolutely adores being cuddled and smooched when given the chance to. Loves to climb and explore (including you if you have long pants on!)

Found all alone as a little stray, Pretzel soon showed his loving personality followed shortly by his crazy fun side that never stops.

As temperatures soar, it’s essential to ensure our furry friends stay comfortable and safe.

Here are some helpful tips:

🔅Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate! 💧
Always provide fresh, cool water.

🔅Create a Cool Spot 🏖️
Set up a shaded area or use a fan to keep the air circulating. A damp towel can also help!

🔅Limit Exercise🚶‍♂️
Avoid walks during peak heat hours. Opt for early mornings or evenings instead.

🔅Groom Regularly ✂️
Keep your pet’s coat well-groomed. Brushing helps remove excess fur and can keep them cooler.

🔅Watch for Heat Stress ⚠️
Be alert for signs of overheating, such as excessive panting, drooling, or lethargy. If you notice these symptoms, cool them down immediately!

🔅Never Leave Pets in Hot Cars 🚗
Even for a few minutes, cars can become dangerously hot. Always take your pets with you.

Here are some essential tips to prevent heatstroke in pets:

1. Stay Hydrated: Always provide fresh, cool water for your pets to drink.

2. Find Shade: Set up a cool, shaded area for your pets to relax and escape the sun. If it’s too hot outside, bring them indoors!

3. Walk in Morning or early evening: Avoid walks and intense play during peak heat. Early mornings or late evenings are the best times for outdoor activities.

4. Watch for Warning Signs: Keep an eye out for heavy panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, or difficulty breathing. If you notice any of these, move your pet to a cooler spot and contact your vet.

5. Mind the Ground: Hot surfaces like sand, asphalt, and concrete can burn your pet's paws. Stick to grassy or shaded paths for walks.

6. Use Cooling Aids: Help your pets stay cool with cooling mats, frozen treats, or damp towels.

Pyometra is a medical condition that affects female dogs and cats. It is a life-threatening infection of the uterus, most commonly seen in unspayed (not neutered) female animals. Pyometra occurs when bacteria enter the uterus and cause an infection, leading to the accumulation of pus. It is a serious condition that requires immediate veterinary attention. Symptoms of pyometra may include excessive drinking and urination, loss of appetite, lethargy, vaginal discharge, and a swollen abdomen. Treatment typically involves surgery to remove the infected uterus (spaying) along with supportive care, such as antibiotics and fluids. Consult with your veterinarian regarding the most appropriate time to sterilse your pet. Factors such as breed and sex can influence this decision.
