I’m thrilled to share that Helpful Hounds (Megan) is now an approved trainer and assessor with the ACT Government! 🥳

Achieving this accreditation required extensive experience in both dog training and the disability sectors. While I’ve always had confidence in my skills, it’s incredibly rewarding to gain such a reputable certification. This will allow my clients to pass the Public Access Test and receive formal accreditation with an Australian government agency.

I’m passionate about advocating for individuals who need assistance animals, and I can’t wait to continue this important work! 🐾💙

Having an assistance dog can make such a huge difference to their handlers lives. They allow their people to access parts of the community that would otherwise not be possible.

What people don’t talk about enough is just how much work goes into training these dogs (and training the humans). Not only do these dogs have to navigate a world that is not natural for them but they do this while also supporting their humans medical conditions.

This involves so much hard work and dedication as well as hundreds of hours of training. It’s a nice compliment when someone says, “I wish my dog was that well behaved.” But I always think, “if only they knew how hard this team has actually worked to get to this point…”.

After so much hard work I get such a buzz when I see a dog and handler come together as a “team”. They offer support to each other and form a bond like no other. 😍

I am such a sucker for a herding breed. 😍 I still get such a buzz in finding what works best for each individual dog whether they have a working role or living the pet life.

We will be away from this Saturday 15th Sept until the following Saturday 21st Sept due to an interstate funeral. I won’t be replying to any new enquiries during this time but will reply once we are back.

I always walk into a training session with a plan of what we will do that day but often things don’t go to plan. When we spotted the rural firies doing demos at a daycare it was worth walking by to get some amazing exposure to lights, sirens and hoses. Oh and there may have been quite a bit of noise from the kids as well. 😅

I always have a plan but I can’t resist a good training opportunity when I see one. It’s all about the journey, not the destination. 😍

For my partners birthday this year I decided to get a charcoal sketch done of his dog, Skye. This was done by Elemental Artistry and I just can’t get over what an amazing job she has done. I’ve included the close up of the eyes and nose because it is just so beautiful (my rubbish photography doesn’t do it justice). The real kicker is that this artist is only 16 years old! 😱

I highly recommend her if you’ve been wanting a portrait done. What a talented individual! 😍

I never like to waste a good training opportunity. I sometimes stop and look at what humans are doing and think to myself, “that’s actually a pretty weird looking thing for another species to try to process”.

What I like to teach the humans that are training their dogs:
🐾 Be patient
🐾 Allow your dog to be at a comfortable distance away
🐾 Provide support when necessary

Side note, dog training is actually mainly human training! 🤗
