Be cautious - not Alarmed
Vet2Pet and one of our local emergency centres have had 4 snake bites in the last 2 days. Snakes are out now with the warmer weather and looking for a Mate.
Vet2Pet would like to remind everyone that it is illegal to kill a snake in Victoria and Snakes are a very important part of our ecosystem, this is why they are protected by law.
The lady in this video did exactly the right thing by getting any animals and children inside and contacting the local snake catching who safetly captured and relocated the snake.
What to do if i suspect my dog or cat has been bitten:
- act quickly, even if you only just suspect or find a dead snake, still seek medical attention! Time is the key, the quicker we can administer anti venom the more likely for a successful outcome.
- call ahead, contact the vet clinic ahead of time so they can prepare for your arrival and check whether they stock the life saving anti venom
- do not bother bandaging area as there is a risk of cutting off circulation and your time is better spent getting to the vet as soon as possible
- restrict movement of animal and carry if possible.
Prevention:
Although this in many cases is unavoidable especially on rural properties, there are still some thing we can do to reduce the risk
- always walk your dog on a lead in warmer months.
- keep yard as tidy as possible, snakes are attracted too and love to hide under childrens toys, sheetmetal and rubbish piles
- keeps animal foods in airtight containers and clean up any spillages. This attracts rats/mice which attracts snakes
- store wood and materials off the ground where possible
- keep grass short and tidy weeds and bushes in gardens
Vet 2 Pet’s car park had a special visitor today!
This time of year our guest is probably a male looking for a lady friend. They are amazing creaturs with hugely powerful legs. Males can travel kilometers in search of a mate and are strangely endowed. We highly recommend googling images of echidna ‘pee pees’ for educational purposes! (Don’t think fb will let us post them!)
Please be careful for these little dudes on the roads!

This is a tea towel being pulled out of a Bernese mountain dog intestines, note- tea towels are for drying dishes not eating. Luckily she got seen to as soon as symptoms started as her stomach started to fill up with air and twist on itself which is a immediate emergency and often fatal. Patient is now recovering well.
