Apologies, I was obviously blocked from this group..... But I was horrified to see this. How many wildlife vets exist in Australia? Hmmmm perhaps my vet friends can answer? It's tiny! I trained in QLD. All of the rehab was under vet permit so I was spoilt. I have moved to several States since and realised I had it very good... but... I also have MANY vet and vet nurse friends - and they do their absolute best to help our wildlife even if it not their specialty.

To see a post like this. So negative and directive... it's not ok. Regardless of speciality, vets still know what they know. Just like us, as wildlife carers do. Posts saying to not bring wildlife to vets are cruel and disgusting. That attitude is dangerous in an animal rehabilitator. We aren't god. In some States could it mean that the animal won't be seen by someone who knows and understands wildlife? Sure. But you know what? We appreciate that they take the time to help us. They will research to assist us. Seriously. Does anyone actually sit back and think about how much vets do for us, and the impact that animals suffering has on THEIR lives?!

Will your vet be right every time? Maybe, maybe not. Will they try to help? Absolutely. Am I crying as I write this because I have lost and loved animals and seen my vets cry too? Yes.

I was blocked from a group that was anti vet. I (lyndsey) trained in North qld since 2003 as a wildlife rehabber.... guess who I trained under? Jim po***ck.... oops... I guess he was a vet..... feel free to google him and his amazing wife Eleanor.

Lyndsey.

I don't like "doing" angry posts.

In fact, this is only my second since the time I rescued a wombat from two emaciated dogs on the west coast of Tasmania. They had torn her ears off. After nursing one of those dogs back to health, we were required to send that poor dog back to her disgusting owners, whereupon they bragged about it on Facebook... The system is broken.

Today, I was so disappointed to be called about a cardboard box of kittens that had been found abandoned at the Exeter markets!!!! This had clearly been done because the person(s) responsible knew they would be found. It is illegal to dump animals - not to mention cruel. These kittens are only 200g and still require heat, and 4 hourly specialised formula feeds and foods.

**We have since told the kittens were being given away at a stall from a cardboard box by a couple who claimed they had been abandoned. **

Thank you to the lovely people in our community who have tried to help these kittens - don't hesitate to reach out to a rescue if you don't feel you are able to keep up with the feed schedule or specialised diets they will need. We are not sure of how many kittens there were to begin with.

This incident has been reported. Just Cats Tasmania are aware. To the person(s) who palmed off those kittens? Just like the people whose dogs attacked the wombat.... You don't deserve to own pets.

Discover the astonishing world of Eastern barred bandicoots! 🦘

Did you know that these tiny creatures boast one of the highest breeding rates in the animal kingdom? Their gestation period, the time from conception to birth, is unbelievably short β€” just 12 days! In Tasmania, their young are born from late May to December. During a single breeding season, a female can have 3-4 litters, with each litter consisting of 1-4 adorable bandicoots. That means a female bandicoot could potentially give birth to up to 16 young in just one year! 🌟

However, it's not all smooth sailing for these remarkable marsupials. Despite their impressive reproductive abilities, their survival rate is quite challenging, especially among juveniles. Predators and diseases are their main threats. Unfortunately, the eastern barred bandicoot's lifespan is less than three years.

Yesterday we received a callout regarding a domestic Muscovy duck at a local lake that had been tangled in fishing line and a hook lodged in his leg. After catching him and providing him with pain relief, the hook was removed. We thought it would be easy, however the barb was lodged against bone which made it a little more difficult to excise. Mr Muscovy is now hook-free and on the mend. If you feel you can give this handsome man a safe home, please don't hesitate to contact us.

PLEASE REMEMBER

If you go fishing, be responsible and safely discard of rubbish and tackle. Birds and water animals are prone to entanglement/injury from discarded tackle (we know majority of people do the right thing here and we appreciate it).

AND

The dumping of domestic animals is illegal and cruel. In the case of ducks and roosters, this seems to be a never ending problem. Ducks dumped at local lakes/ponds are prone to dog attacks, and worse, they can and will breed with native ducks - causing hybrids.

We know people love going and feeding ducks, but instead of feeding them, perhaps consider giving the domestic ones a forever home where they will be safe and loved.

The Pacific Black Duck Conservation Group is currently working with TasWater , BirdLife Tasmania and local municipalities to identify and remove dumped domestic ducks from our waterways as to assist in protecting Australian native ducks. If you would like to support their work, please join their group for more information.

Thankyou to the brilliant folk at TasARC
Trish for this incredibly kind donation of dog food for my multi dog household! These guys support us with food for our domestic animals so we can continue to provide feed and care to our wildlife! Such a great initiative!
I would also like to thank my gorgeous friend Tas Talbot and her husband Trav for picking it all up for me and bringing it up north! I would also like to send special love to a kind workmate Sharon Andersen who recently donated to my animals and my lovely neighbour who is amazingly generous as well ❀️

River Monty and Benji say Thankyou x

πŸŒ’ Give animals a β€˜brake’ and slow down at dusk and dawn.

πŸ„ You might think you know our roads like the back of your hand, but you never know when an animal might suddenly appear in front of your car.

🚨 Fatal and serious crashes have been caused in Tasmania by drivers attempting to avoid wildlife on our roads.

🦘 The best thing you can do to keep yourself, our furry friends, and other road users safe is to slow down at dusk and dawn.

πŸ“± If you do collide with an animal or find an injured animal on the road and you stop to check it, make sure you have stopped somewhere safe. The 24-hour Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary Rescue Service can be called on 0447 264 625 (0447 ANI MAL) for advice.

Sometimes things are just meant to be. Yesterday little Miss Pea was feeling quite indignant about no longer being the cheeky, loud and messy self- appointed Queen of a local business, but today she starts her new journey as a beloved pet. Thank you Rachael Ackroyd , anthony and ruby blu for making our Queen Pea part of your feather family along with her handsome new boyfriends. We didn't expect to find her a forever home so fast but sometimes the timing is perfect.

UPDATE: Miss Pea had found a great new home with our long-time bird loving friend, Rachael and her family. What a lucky little lady Miss Pea is!

A little while ago, we were contacted by a local business to assist in trapping and relocating a cheeky peahen who had decided to make herself a home (lets just say she isn't the tidiest room mate) at the business' front door alcove. Day and night we attempted to trap her while she managed to evade us all. Today we were in luck and the guys from the business managed to trap her themselves just as I was on my way there to try and catch her again!!! Today was our day!!! It turns out she is beloved of the people who frequent the business, so they will be happy to know we will find her a loving home with perhaps a handsome man or two to show off to her and treat her like the Queen she is! In the meantime she is nice and safe here with the chickens And away from the busy roads she wandered along during the day. Thanks for trusting us with her care Lachlan and Tristan!

If you are interested in adopting little miss Pea, or have ever considered adding peafowl to your flock, it is important to know that peafowl require confinement for about 8 months prior to being allowed to free range. While they look pretty and domesticated, they are exceptional fliers, runners and adapt well to living feral which means they will wander off never to be seen again.

Even though this is a southern tas initiative, it can easily work out cheaper than your average vet neuter and you get a few hours of chilling out about Hobart. If anyone has some leads on how we could make this a reality for the north, lets work to make it happen

We've run the numbers and done the research and the only answer to reducing the feral and unwanted cat population is to Snip.Chip.Contain.
Book your feline friend in for de-sexing and microchipping for $49.99!

Have you ever wondered what wildlife inhabit your property? Some of our properties have cameras set up to record releases as well as track wildlife. If you are passionate about citizen science and love to assist in the monitoring of our wildlife (or feral, in some cases), I highly recommend signing up with Wildtracker, which is run by the Tasmania Land Conservancy.

Tasmanians are lucky to share their backyards with a range of native species, and one citizen science project β€” with 100,000 images β€” is proving it.

A few weeks ago, one of our beautiful followers/sponsors found a young muscovy duck on the side of the highway bleeding from the mouth and nose, and with an injured leg. This beautiful person called us and asked for help even if the duckling needed to be put to sleep. Fast forward a few weeks and "snickers" has healed from all her injuries and has gone to live with the lovely person who found her. She is now living her best life with an amazing family, and two unhappy chickens.☺️

Please remember it is illegal to dump domestic animals. Regardless of legalities, it is unethical and their lives are often very short like little snickers would have been.

Thanks tash and darko for caring about not just wildlife but also domestics. Tash and darko also assisted with Train, our Bennett's wallaby who came to us with a broken tail and arm, a split open head (to the bone) and ligament damage to the leg. I'm so glad could show you both their progress

We are so excited to have Lamby McLambface (Eric) go to his forever home this month. He joins 2 Ryland friends and several alpacas. We are told he is the first to lead his new friends to food. We are devastated that his friend, Pixie passed away, and wasn't able to join the gang, but are so thankful that Lamby has started the new part of his life. Thank you to the Hamilton Family for giving little lamby his best Future life

Another of our beautiful animal loving earth angels has left us to be an angel in heaven.
Beverley Allan passed earlier this month :(
Beverley was always a huge supporter of ARA and of me personally.
Sad is an understatement- Beverley was one of the special ones.
She will be busy organising Rainbow Bridge now with her beloved furkids who were waiting for her.
