Merry sitting on the trolley ringside at the shows on Friday. Despite the strong, windy conditions, Merry happily strutted her stuff and was awarded:

🖤🧡 Bitch Challenge & Best State Bred in Group

🧡🖤 Royal Launceston Show under Mr Simon Sim (Philippines)

🖤🧡 Bitch Challenge
Toy Show of Tasmania under Mrs S Meads (NZ)

I am thrilled with how Merry is coming along - she is maturing well and only a few points away from her title now.

GETTING PUPPIES USED TO A CRATE

❤Mr Red and his brothers and sisters are getting used to their bedding being in a crate.

✅The puppies are happy to travel in the car in a crate and they are also getting used to sleeping in a crate overnight, with the door open.

✅This week we began to feed the puppies in a crate individually with a meal. Crate conditioning is a gradual process as we want our puppies to feel safe and happy when crated.

✅The crate in the puppy pen has the door left open so the puppies can come and go when they please. We also keep the crate door open at night so that the puppies can continue their good toileting skills and use their turf mats in their pen, when they need to go. It will be a little while yet before they can hold on overnight.

✅ When the puppies are in a closed crate at the moment, they are supervised and are let out as soon as they finish eating. This prevents any fussing. Over time we increase the duration with long lasting chews, raw meaty bones and puzzle toys.

Happy birthday, beautiful Kit, who is 12 weeks old today. ❤

PUPPY CULTURE, THEN WHAT?

Although our Puppy Culture programme officially finishes at 12 weeks, Kit's adventures are just beginning. We will continue with his training, including show training and more importantly, his socialisation in the coming months.

At 12 weeks, this developmental window in puppies starts to close. Kit's early socialisation that we started when he was 3 weeks old, will help him to adjust to the things that life throws at him and is an important foundation for the next part of his puppyhood.

We are looking forward to Kit joining our show team next month and seeing what the future holds for him.

Emelia's babies at 1 week.

Here you can see our daily routine of weighing the puppies and doing the ENS exercises.

ENS stands for Early Neurological Stimulation and is the first part of the Puppy Culture programme that we follow. These exercises are done between the ages 3-16 days.

There are 5 exercises, which are done for 3-5 seconds each with each puppy.

🧠You can learn more about ENS here:

Emelia is a 2nd time mother and a whelping dream. She whelped 6 puppies in less than 3 hours and during daylight! Always good! All the puppies were good weights - plump and well nourished.

Sorry for the lack of posts of late.

We have had a crazy month with the storms and damage to our property. We were evacuated due to falling trees and broken power lines and have been living in temporary accommodation since. We are currently in our 3rd week away from home.

We had an hour to collect our stuff and leave. I bundled up Kit (who was 8 weeks old) Emelia and her new litter of 6 (who were 19 days old) and the other 6 adult dogs.

It has been stressful, as we have faced lots of challenges during this time and this is ongoing. I am just taking things day by day and focussing on with what I can do, rather than what I can't.

I have had to make do with found objects, as I have not had access to my usual puppy things. I have bought some 2nd hand things and am improvising a lot.

Kit is now 11 weeks old. I have continued with his socialisation and his basic training and he is a shining star, in what has been a dark sky at times. He is confident and happy and takes things as they come. We have continued to implement the 'meat' of the Puppy Culture programme with socialisation, crate training, manding, toilet training, loose lead walking and recall practice.

I will make an album for Emelia's babies in the coming days. I have a ton of photos and videos to sort through, for those of you who like to follow along with what we are doing. This litter is now 5 weeks old, so the fun is just beginning.

Here is a clip of Kit yesterday, down at the jetty, practising his loose lead walking. This was a new environment for him - he was a good boy.

WHAT IS MANDING?

❤ G i v i n g p u p p i e s a v o i c e ❤

Manding is a part of the Puppy Culture programme that we follow. It is a polite way for a puppy to ask for something (instead of jumping up or barking or crying, like some dogs do).

It is something they learn to do, and not something we ask them to do (eg a request such as "Sit, Drop etc).

This is a good article if you want to learn more:

MANDING PRACTICE CONTINUES

We only started practising yesterday. Already today, Kit is quietly sitting at the front of his pen, when he wakes up and waiting for food. I have been treating him when I see this behaviour and also practising at meal times.

🔊🔊 SOUND SOCIALISATION 🔊🔊

6 week old Kit is snoozing while I'm in the kitchen with the blender going.

We're exposing him to as many different sounds as possible, so that he'll stay calm in noisy places.

We listen to real sounds, as well as using sound recordings, apps and CDs for noises we don't have at home.

❤ Manding training began for Kit today.

❤ This concept from Puppy Culture is about communication; about "giving puppies a voice".

❤ Puppies learn that by manding, they may access good stuff (eg me, treats, pats, attention, play etc), instead of barking, crying or jumping up.

❤ Sitting quietly is not something they HAVE to do, it's more of a polite way for a puppy to ask for something.
