With the wild weather and winds come the stingers πŸͺΌ - so please be vigilant when walking your dog on the beach over the next few days. Aside from being painful, stings can cause swelling and anaphylaxis, and are particularly dangerous if your pet ingests the jellyfish and is stung in the throat. There's some great information from the Aus Animal Poisions Helpline here πŸ‘‡, including the advice to keep your pup on a leash until you've checked the shoreline and are well away from danger. πŸ’₯ In the event of a sting or munched jellyfish, your vet can guide you over the phone if your pet requires treatment or not. ❀️

The Animal Poisons Helpline has recently received several calls regarding dogs ingesting beached bluebottles. Otherwise known as man-of-war

Happy rainy Monday β˜”οΈ. While we haven't had the most perfect walking weather, there are many other ways to give your dog some stimulation and enrichment πŸ’™. Around 20 minutes of sniffing can be just as stimulating as an hour's walk, so a little explore/sniff adventure can be perfect for a rainy day activity 🐽. Even just going for a drive, taking them to a cosy cafe or undercover area, visiting a friend, giving them a treat puzzle, or even working on some training! Your dog may also be happy just braving the rain, like this little sweetie in his rain gear πŸ™Š.

We had the absolute pleasure of spending the day with Jerret the ferret yesterday, and we all fell in LOVE πŸ₯Ή. Jerret has had some ongoing dental issues that were causing quite a bit of discomfort. As an older gentleman, Jerret needed extra care in his treatment plan, and while it wasn't without risk, it was clear that Jerret needed dental surgery to improve his quality of life ❀️. Dr Evan was the man for the job, and after carefully anaesthetising Jerret, he removed 7 problem teeth! 🦷 Jerret recovered like a champ, and we are honestly in awe of this little happy-go-lucky legend. For some very cute content, you can find Jerret on instagram at 😍.

With the warmer weather, it's important to be checking the pavement and sand temperature before taking your pet for a walk. πŸ”₯ Every summer we see many burnt paw pads on dogs, which can be extremely painful, with some cases requiring bandaging for weeks πŸ˜–. Walking during the coolest parts of the day will help prevent burnt paws as well as heat stroke - a double whammy of protection and responsible ownership for your pet. ❀️

With temperatures rising today, if you’re not sure whether it’s too hot to walk your dog, just follow the 5-second rule πŸ–πŸΆ

Simply place the back of your hand on a surface for five seconds. If you can’t handle the heat, your dog can’t either and it would be best to wait till things cool down before venturing out πŸšΆβ€β™€

Your dog can easily overheat when walking in the warmer weather. Dogs cool themselves through their paws and by panting. They simply can’t do this if the ground and air is too hot! πŸ₯΅

To avoid burning your pooch’s pads, try walking early in the morning before the pavement has heated up or later at night on cooler grassed areas 🌿

If you think your pet has overheated or is suffering from heat related issues, call an RSPCA veterinary hospital or your local veterinarian immediately.

πŸŽ† New Year's Eve is almost here, and so are the fireworks! Did you know that more pets are lost on this night than any other? 😿

While fireworks signal celebrations for us, they can be terrifying for our furry friends. The loud noises often cause fear and anxiety, leading some pets to try to escape by jumping or digging under fences - and in the process, they can get hurt.

To help keep your pets safe, here are our top tips for the fireworks season:
🐾 Know when fireworks are happening so you can plan ahead
🐾 Give your pet plenty of exercise beforehand - a tired pet is a calmer pet!
🐾 Create a cozy, safe space inside with closed blinds, a comfy hideaway, and calming music or TV to mask the noise
🐾 Stay calm and act normally - avoid comforting your pet too much, as it can reinforce anxiety
🐾 Make sure your pet is microchipped and that their details are up-to-date, just in case they escape

See link in comments for our full guide about ways to calm your dog during fireworks. πŸŽ‡πŸΎ
