We would like to extend a big congratulations to our sponsored rider Russ Bradley on the sale of his gorgeous mare Metallic Spin. 🌟

Congrats Russ on breeding and producing such a super mare, her new owners will be very lucky!

Metallic Spin is also half sister to Western Acres, also bred by Russ, who won the Prydes Easifeed performance horse challenge at Nutrien this year! ⭐️🏆

https://www.facebook.com/share/18MumWqRke/?mibextid=WC7FNe

METALLIC SPIN just spun her way to $140,000 under the hammer, proving once again that class runs in the family! This 4-year-old mare is a full sister to the 2017 Classic Sale topper, and she’s every bit as impressive.

Sired by the one and only METALLIC CAT, she’s a fully trained cutter with the talent to dominate the NCHA Derby or kick off a stellar campdraft career.

A huge congratulations to Ruan Grazing on securing this powerhouse! With moves like hers, the future is looking seriously sharp. ✨

Meet Peta! Gippsland Veterinarian Group Equine Nurse!

Where did you grow up and where/when did you do your nursing?

I grew up in the eastern suburbs in a place called Warranwood. I had my first taste of Veterinary Nursing at the Eltham Veterinary Clinic before having children and worked there for about 18mths. I then decided to get backinto it in 2020.

Where did you work before coming to GVG?

I spent a long time as a stay-at-home mum and did Bookkeeping from home before deciding I would like to pursue a career in Veterinary Nursing again. Before becoming a mum, I had a variety of different jobs over the years including being a Golf Caddy and English Teacher in Japan, working at a Ballydoyle Racing and Coolmore Stud in Ireland, Veterinary Nurse plus a stint in the Australian Army.

When did you start working at GVG?

I started working at GVG in August 2020 and completed my Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing in 2022.

What are your favourite parts of the job?

Definitely the variety! Switching between Equine Nursing, small animal nursing and reception means I am always learning and doing something new every day. And getting to play with lots of lovely animals is an added bonus.

Do you have any pets?

Living with my family are Buddy the crazy kelpie, Barry the Netherland dwarf bunny, two Quarter horses and a Welsh Mountain Pony.

What hobbies do you enjoy outside of work?

Work and family keep me really busy but when I do have some free time I enjoy hanging out with the ponies, travelling with the family and lots and lots of reading!

What’s your favourite bit about living in South Gippy?

Hard to pick one thing as there are so many! But I love how beautiful it is here, the proximity to beautiful bush and beaches, the lovely little towns with their quaint cafes and shops, the friendly people I meet everyday and, having young kids, how safe it is here.

Pro Tips – Summertime and managing Horses

We are well underway into some beautiful summer weather here in Gippsland! Whilst glorious summer days and coolmornings / evenings make for some beautiful horsey time, the heat can pose several challenges as far as management of your equine friends.

1. Access to fresh water – Sounds crazily simple! However, horses can drink up to 20-50 litres per day. Especially during higher temperatures and humid weather. Horses in group turnout can occasionally be bullied away fromdrinking, which can lead to dehydration. Owners ensuring to observe herd dynamics is important. It is always first on the list to always ensure access to plenty of clean water. If using smaller troughs, aiming to ensure they have some shade throughout the day, so the water does not heat up whilst sitting in the sun.

2. How can I tell if my horse is hydrated? A quick test for owners to assess hydration, is to lift your horse's upper lip, and gently press on their gum. Their gum through be pink & moist. Many owners will also know of the old tried and tested skin pinch test, raising a tent of skin on your horse’s neck and watching how quickly it returns to normal. This is not always accurate however, and often only shows change when horses are significantly dehydrated. If concerned your horse is suffering from de-hydration, best to give your equine vet clinic a ring tochat to one of the team.

3. Consider wet feeds – Dehydration in horses can lead to several issues, some of which are life threatening, such as impaction colic. One way to increase water intake in your horse’s diet, is to consider feeding a soaked feed ormash, such as beet-pulp. Beet-pulp will double in size once soaked and holds an immense amount of water. It is also an ideal vessel to add electrolytes into your horse’s diet on extreme temperature days, without them sifting to the bottom of the feed bin! Here at GVG Equine we use the Restore Electrolytes from KER, in either paste or powder form.

4. Plenty of shade – another basic point, but so often overlooked! Ensuring there is shade in your horse’s pasture is vital, especially during the afternoon by hours when the sun and UV are strongest.

5. Looking after skin – Horses with pink skin will often be prone to burning in the summertime. Many horses have pink skin around their eyes and muzzles. Generally, the easiest way to combat this is with a UVrated Fly mask. However, some horses are excellent at removing their fly mask, and as such owners may choose to implement products containing zinc & sunscreen for some added protection.

6. Riding - Avoid working horses in the heat of the day – aim for early mornings or late evenings when temperatures are milder.

7. Rug appropriately – On extreme heat days, it is recommended that your horse have either no rug, or a very light flag or mesh rug, as once temperatures reach over 30degC, many horses’ will sweat even in cottons.

If you have any concerns about your equine friends, please reach out to any of our clinics in South Gippsland and Bass Coast for advice!

🐴 Some wonderful information on Pastern Dermatitis, Written by our very own Dr Jess Wheeler! 👩‍⚕️🩺

With our recent hot, humid weather we are seeing an increased incidence of skin problems such as pastern dermatitis.

Pastern dermatitis is the term used to describe a range of different skin diseases that result in inflammation and crusting of the lower legs. The mechanisms of disease are complex and involve triggers such as environmental factors, bacteria, fungi, drug reactions, allergies and sunlight-induced changes to blood vessels. Generally, the most common cause (and an important perpetuating factor) is extended exposure to moisture which macerates the skin and decreases its protective mechanisms, allowing bacteria to colonise.

All horses are at risk, however those with feathered legs or white legs are more susceptible.

The signs of pastern dermatitis vary according to the cause and severity of the disease. Generally, the skin of the lower limos is red and inflamed, before developing crusts, scabs ana erosions. The legs very sensitive and lameness can be observed in some cases, particularly
when secondary infections occur. It is important to identify the complicated causative factors of your horses' pastern dermatitis as successful treatment depends highly on the underlying cause. Prognosis is generally great if appropriate treatment is instituted to prevent severe chronic changes.

If poorly managed, pastern dermatitis can spread up the legs and in draft breeds contribute to a condition called Chronic Progressive Lymphoedema (CPL). Pastern dermatitis can be prevented by avoiding chronic exposure of your horses skin to moisture. Whilst this might sound ridiculous in gippsland (!) simple things can help such as keeping horses in paddocks with short grass, moving your horses feed every day to prevent standing in the same muddy spot, keeping hair clipped on lower legs, avoiding long term use of boots that trap moisture and having good hygiene.

See below a great example of successful pastern dermatitis treatment managed by GVG

Bute - What's the deal?!

Chances are, as a horse owner, you have come across the equine Anti-Inflammatory drug “Bute” once or twice, with some of us even having a small amount on hand in the feed room left over from a previous prescription. But what is “bute” really, and how do we know we are administering it appropriately and correctly? When administered appropriately it can be very helpful with a wide range of ailments.

Did you know, there are now alternatives to Bute that can be more appropriate for some cases? We felt it would be worth sharing a few tips, guidelines, and dispelling some myths about this common drug. Read on!

Some Quick Facts!
• Its full name is Phenylbutazone, or “Bute” for short.
• It’s primary action is an anti-inflammatory and painkiller
• It’s part of a class of drugs called NSAID’s. (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory drugs)
• It is available in a Paste, Powder or Injectable form.
• It is essentially the horse equivalent to Ibuprofen for people.
• It is only available via prescription from your Vet.

When is it appropriate to use?
• First and foremost, in consultation with your Vet!
• Common uses include relieving pain and inflammation for ailments such as laminitis, arthritis, injuries, and occasionally fever.
• It is important to note, Owners should not administer bute for symptoms of Colic!
• Administering bute for colic without consulting with your Equine vet may mean your Vet is not able to administer a more appropriate & effective drug on arrival.
• Your Vet may prescribe an alternative drug with similar properties that is more appropriate for long term management of chronic conditions such as laminitis.

What are some potential side effects of ongoing use?
• Prolonged use of bute can cause several problems, especially if used consistently over a long period of time
• The main side effects from prolonged use include, gastrointestinal irritation, (such as colic, diarrhoea, ulceration) and Kidney dysfunction.
• Your Equine vet will likely not recommend bute for long term and ongoing use, and may be able to offer you some alternative therapies or options to support horses with ongoing conditions.

When should I stop administering Bute to my horse?
• If you have been using bute for a prescribed course by your vet, and have a remaining dose, consult with your veterinarian before continuing to administer.
• If your horse shows any signs of colic (rolling excessively, pawing, kicking at stomach, looking back at stomach or inappetence)
• Loose stools
• Inappetence or reluctance to eat
• Reduced water intake or reluctance to drink

If you see any of these signs, don’t hesitate and immediately call the Gippsland Veterinary Group Clinic on 5662 2251 to consult with our vet team.

We were so impressed with “Emmy Lou” today during her consult (on the verandah 😂). At 28 years young she is a credit to her owners! We have made a detailed asthma plan for her & will monitor her regularly to ensure she stays in great shape.

Equine asthma is a respiratory condition that we often see in horses, which involves a hypersensitivity to aerosolised substances in the environment such as dust, mould, pollen and others! 😷🤧
Asthmatic horses might exhibit an increased respiratory rate, intermittent cough, exercise intolerance and wheezing heard on lung auscultation. Diagnosis commonly includes Endoscopy and/ or bronchoalveolar lavage (taking a cell sample from the lung).
Managing equine asthma involves a multifaceted approach that needs to be tailored to the individual horse. Emmy Lou will he trained to use an inhaler to deliver aerosolised medication straight to her lungs, which is highly effective and mitigates the negative effects of giving drugs systemically.
