The Pack Horse Library Project was a Works Progress Administration (WPA) program that delivered books to remote regions in the Appalachian Mountains between 1935 and 1943. Women were very involved in the project that eventually had 30 different libraries serving 100,000 people. Packhorse/ mule librarians were known by many different names, including "book women," "book ladies," and "packsaddle librarians." The project helped employ around 200 people and reached around 100,000 residents in rural Kentucky.

Cordillo Downs in the north of SA had its own post office in 1901. Mail was carried on The Cobbler which was pulled by camels across parts of the desert that was too rough for horses.
At Carraweena on the Strzelecki Track, south of Innamincka, the mail (& passengers) were then transferred to motor truck.

The bottom photo shows the camel mail at the Alice Springs Telegraph Station in about 1901 before the railway line was completed to the Alice.

HUGE BEER KEGS, 1885. In view was the Helena Brewery (Horsky, Miller, & Co.) and their wagons pulled by 4-horse teams. The structure later housed the Old Brewery Theatre, until demolished in 1973 for Urban Renewal.

In 1864, Helena quickly grew as a camp during the Montana gold rush. In 1888, it was reported that Helena had the most millionaires per capita of any city in the world, and all had made their fortunes because of gold.

In 1875, Helena became the capital of Montana Territory, and remained the capital when Montana became a state in 1889. With a population of about 30,000, Helena is the Nation’s fifth least populous state capital, but is the sixth most populous city in Montana. Montana typically ranks among the top three states for beer consumption on a per capita basis. Click image to enlarge if using a PC. Research and digital sharpening of photo by Gary Coffrin.

CHUCKWAGON at the Pitchfork Ranch, circa 1925. You can see the Pitchfork brand on the cabinet door, and also on the left end of the branding iron used to suspend pots. (Click or zoom image to better see details.) Smoke slightly obscured the boots of cook Bobby Burns, a Scotsman who had previously been a clown for the Ringling Brothers Circus. Three horses, normally kept away, were hitched to the chuckwagon.

CHARLES BELDEN gained fame for his photographs of Wyoming’s Pitchfork Ranch from 1921 to 1940. The Pitchfork was near Meeteetse, about 30 miles south of Cody, Wyoming. Text and digital sharpening of photo by Gary Coffrin.
