Welcome to 2022. It's a great year to put PROGRESS over perfection.

As horse riders, there are lots of things that we want to perfect, but aiming for perfection can be a sure way to feel like a failure (spoiler: the closer you get, the further away you realise you are!)

By putting progress over perfection, not only will you feel better about yourself and your horse – but you will be setting yourself up for success.

Everything we do with horses can be broken down into smaller and smaller progress points.

For example, a great rein back starts with your horse just bracing their chest muscles. A perfect walk onto the float starts with one hoof on the ramp. Even that starts with the horse moving towards the float, and that requires a good ‘go’ in hand and so on. These are all progress points on the road to success.

We talk about this in the Pony Club Australia Syllabus in relation to ‘shaping’ (at C*), but that approach is set up from the very first Certificate by our constant focus on reward training.

The best thing about putting progress over perfection is that you get to celebrate all your little wins along the way!

We would love to hear what your ‘big’ goal is for 2022 and what you think the very first step along the way will be.

Happy New Year!

With holiday season fast approaching, now is a better time than ever to check your horses pastures for poisonous plants and weeds.

When removing these plants, don't forget to also remove the roots as well (it will save you a lot of time and effort in the long run)!

Horses very rarely require a de-worming treatment once every 3 months, or once every 6 weeks.

De-worming on a schedule like this only overexposes parasites to drugs and drives drug resistance to develop.

As with nearly any other disease (human or animal), get a diagnosis before treatment.

The best way to responsibly use de-worming drugs is to check your horses via a f***l egg count (FEC). It's easier than it sounds!

Most local vets will be able to do a FEC for you. You just need to take them a sample of your horse's manure, then wait for the results and advice about what de-worming product to use, if at all.

Once on a schedule of FECs, most horses will only require two FECs a year. In the long run, this can turn out cheaper than simply deworming the horses routinely without knowing they need it.

Want to know a secret of good horse training?

End your training session on three correct or improved repetitions in a row.

This is better than simply finishing on one good repetition because with three you are beginning to form a habit.

It is always better to do a short session of good ‘work’ than a long session of any kind of work - good or bad.

You will then often see greater results in your next session.

Horses and Smell

What smells does your horse like? What smells make him pull this face?

* The Flehmen response is when a horse raises its head, curls its lip and inhales. It helps the horse get a better sense of something interesting in the air.

* There have been very few studies of the sense of smell in horses, but we know that stallions do not rely on smell to detect a mare ready for mating, rather her behaviour gives the signal.

* Horses can identify other horses by smell and these individual compounds are mostly a component of hair.

* There is a genetic basis so a horse may recognise its relatives.

* If a person is handling several horses in turn, the scent of the last horse may be detected by the next horse so in this situation it would be better to handle any aggressor in the group last.

* The smell of predator urine causes a fright response in horses and this persists even if the horse has never met such a predator.

* Strong and unfamiliar smells like eucalyptus oil can cause a similar reaction.

* People that are scared or stressed emit specific odours associated with fear and it has been suggested that this will make the horse more flighty or agitated. Research has shown that the opposite may be true, as long as the stressed person is still, with the horse reacting more calmly. This goes to explain the value of equine-assisted therapy for anxiety disorders in humans.

* There is scope to use particular smells associated with positive experiences as a training aid, but the challenge is to identify the smells horses particular like.

Tell what smells your horse likes, and what smells make him give the Flehmen response!
