🚨 Urgent Alert: Parvo & Panleuk Outbreak in SEQ & Northern NSW! 🚨

There has been a rise in cases of canine parvovirus (parvo) and feline panleukopenia (panleuk) in Brisbane, Logan, Gold Coast, Ipswich, and Northern NSW and AWLQ is calling on all pet owners to act quickly to protect their furry friends. Both diseases are highly contagious, potentially deadly, and costly to treat.

𝗣𝗮𝗻𝗹𝗲𝘂𝗸𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗮 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟵𝟬% 𝗳𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗸𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀, 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘃𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲.

😷 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘆𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea (often bloody)
- Lethargy
- Loss of appetite
- Fever

If your pet shows any of these symptoms, seek veterinary care immediately.

🛑 𝗣𝗥𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗜𝗦 𝗞𝗘𝗬!
- Make sure your pets are up-to-date on their vaccinations.
- Keep cats indoors to limit exposure, especially young or unvaccinated ones.
- If surrendering a pet, ensure they’ve been vaccinated 2 weeks before surrender.

⚠️ AWLQ Gold Coast Rehoming Centre is not accepting surrendered cats at this time due to the outbreak.

Hi! My name is Julia and I am the owner of . Alongside my partner, Jade. We are a little family of three (+ 2 pups and 1 bird) aiming to create a 'home away from home' that is filled with love, joy and security. I have a special interest in all things animal related. This includes animal emergency, nutrition, training and care. I have qualifications that have furthered my education and I have been involved with many volunteer organisations like RSPCA & Guide Dogs Australia. I have recently had a job change which has allowed me more time to focus on my family and my beloved business. Did you know ... over 80% of our dogs over the age of three have periodontal disease. ‼️

How & why you ask? This is due to lack of knowledge and understanding of how important it is to offer regular dental treats, manually brush their chompers and encourage chewing. 🪥

Few dogs show obvious signs of dental disease, so it is up to us and our local veterinarian to uncover this hidden and often painful condition. 🏥

Annual dental check ups are strongly recommended with your vet. However, depending on the clinic, dental checks can be booked in with a nurse! 🧑‍⚕️ 👨‍⚕️

If your dog shows signs, they may be pawing at the mouth and shaking their head. You will also notice build up on the teeth and the gums surrounding will be swollen, red and potentially infected. Oh and can't forget the smelly breathe!!! Yuck 🤮

Weekend adventures with Maple. Over the past 3 months we have noticed that Maple itches more and more every day. Constant red patches and hotspots has been an ongoing problem. Did you know birds require more to their diet than just the commercial seed you purchase at local supermarkets and stores?

Their diet is important and is crucial to their survival. It is the entire basis to their quality of life and ensuring they age and grow to their full potential. It aids in their health, lifespan, appearance, energy and behaviour.

If you are considering ownership of a bird, whether it’s a budgie, kakariki like our girl, eclectus or macaw, there are serveral factors to consider in their diet.

For example:
- The type and brand of food presented
- The texture of stands and food
- Entertainment: in both toys and how their food is presented. You can purchase toys that encourage natural feeding behaviours like foraging
- Quantity: ensuring you don’t over feed them which ultimately prevents malnutrition and obesity
- Grit: good quality grit helps them digest their food and ensure their body is absorbing the correct amount of nutrients
- Treats: ensuring they are healthy treats and suitable. For example, no salt
- Water: both for drinking and bathing. This encourages grooming
- Supplements: if your bird is presented with a good diet quality and a variety of nutritional snacks, supplements are not required day to day. Please consult with your local veterinarian if concerned

As dog owners it’s our responsibility to provide a home that is suitable for their health. Many factors contribute to this. For example, diet, exercise and also environmental factors. If clean water, shade and air flow isn’t provided during the summer time, it can lead to problems that impact their health. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke can lead to serious and severe problems. It’s important to know the signs and contact your local veterinary clinic as soon as possible. No question is silly and they are there to help and provide the best standard of care for your pet.
