When it comes to pet insurance, many pet owners wonder ๐˜ช๐˜ด ๐˜ช๐˜ต ๐˜ธ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ ๐˜ช๐˜ต?

Essentially, pet insurance is much like any other insurance out there. You need to weigh up whether youโ€™re comfortable in paying veterinary costs as they come up, or if youโ€™d rather know that most of the bill will be taken care of when an emergency occurs.

So, what are the pros and cons of pet insurance?

๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐˜€
โœ… Peace of mind that youโ€™re covered if an unexpected vet bill pops up
โœ… You pay a set fee each month, so you know what youโ€™re up for
โœ… Some plans also include preventative care such as wellness checks and vaccinations

๐—–๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€
โŒ You may end up paying a lot more in premiums than you end up claiming back
โŒ Some conditions may not be covered
โŒ You often still have to pay some out-of-pockets costs depending on your policy

While we canโ€™t answer the question definitively for you, we do everything we can to make paying for your petโ€™s veterinary care easier.

We offer:
๐Ÿถ ๐—ฉ๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ฃ๐—ฎ๐˜† โ€“ a simple fortnightly payment plan that allows you to pay for your petโ€™s treatment over a longer period of time.
๐Ÿถ ๐—ฃ๐—ฒ๐˜ ๐—œ๐—ป๐˜€๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ ๐—š๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐—ข๐—ป๐—น๐˜† ๐—ฆ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ - for a large number of insurance companies, you simply pay the gap (the difference between the vetโ€™s invoice and the claim benefit under your policy) and go!
๐Ÿถ ๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฃ๐—ฒ๐˜๐˜€ ๐—ฃ๐—ฒ๐˜ ๐—ช๐—ฒ๐—น๐—น๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€ ๐—ฃ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜€ - we are an official Thriving Pets vet practice, which allows you to take advantage of your Thriving Pets wellness plan benefits at our clinic.

If you ever have any questions about the payment options we have available at our vet practice, please don't hesitate to ask us. You can drop into our vet clinic at 141 Bryants Road Loganholme, or call us on 07 3801 1744.

Have you ever wondered if you could give human medicine to your pets when they are unwell?

๐ŸšซThe short answer is no.

While some medications we prescribe as a vet may seem the same as your own medications, there are a number of key differences.

๐Ÿšฉ ๐—™๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—บ๐˜‚๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป - Some of the ingredients in human medications are extremely toxic for animals, even in very small doses. A number of children's formulations have also additives (such as the artificial sweetener xylitol) that can be also be toxic for pets.
๐Ÿšฉ ๐— ๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—ผ๐—น๐—ถ๐˜€๐—บ - Animals process medication very differently to people, and can't metabolise certain ingredients.
๐Ÿšฉ ๐——๐—ผ๐˜€๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ฒ - It can be very hard to gauge the correct dosage of medication for your pet, as your pet's breed, size and health condition all need to be considered.

If you feel your pet needs medication, it's vital to discuss this with your vet. They can correctly diagnose what your pet needs, and advise you on the most appropriate medication that is safe for your cat or dog.

If you have any concerns about your pet's health, our vets are here to help, and will always try and give you a range of options to treat your pet's health condition. To make an appointment, you can call us on 07 3801 1744 or visit our website at https://bryantsroadvet.com.

Phew, it sure has been hot lately! And if we're feeling the heat, chances are your pets are too!

While most cats and dogs are pretty efficient at cooling themselves down by panting, they can become overheated in some circumstances. But by following a few essential measures, you can ensure your pets stay cool and healthy even on the hottest Brisbane summer days.

๐Ÿฅต ๐—ข๐—ณ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—บ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐˜„๐—ฒ๐˜ ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—ฑ to help your pet take in more fluid
๐Ÿฅต ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐˜† ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—ณ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐—ต ๐—ฑ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ธ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜„๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ at home and when out on a walk
๐Ÿฅต ๐—ช๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ธ ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ ๐—ฑ๐—ผ๐—ด ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜๐˜€ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐˜† to reduce the risk of them overheating or burning their paws on the hot pavement or road
๐Ÿฅต ๐—ž๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ฝ ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐˜ ๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—น ๐—ต๐—ผ๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ฒ during the day with the air-conditioning or fans on
๐Ÿฅต ๐—–๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—น ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ ๐—ฑ๐—ผ๐—ด ๐—ผ๐—ณ๐—ณ by letting them swim in your pool, or letting them play under a hose or sprinkler

Even with all of these measures, pets can still overheat. Flatter-faced brachycephalic breeds of dogs (such as pugs, bulldogs and shih tzus) and cats (persians, burmese and himalayans) are also at increased risk of heat stroke due to their shortened noses and ineffective panting.

Heat stroke is a life-threatening condition, so itโ€™s important to know the signs to look out for.

โš ๏ธ Distressed breathing
โš ๏ธ Panting that seems to be excessively laboured
โš ๏ธ Difficulty walking or weakness
โš ๏ธ Lethargy
โš ๏ธ Vomiting
โš ๏ธ Drooling or salivating

If you think your pet may have heat stroke, you need to try and cool them down as quickly as possible. Move them into air-conditioning or under a fan and spray cool water onto their fur and skin and call your vet for advice.

If you are ever concerned that your pet may be overheating and becoming unwell, you can call our vet clinic on 07 3801 1744.

If it's your dog's first birthday, and they haven't been desexed yet, then its time for a puppuccino and a check-up with your vet!

A health check for your young adult dog encompasses all aspects of their health and wellbeing:

โžก๏ธ Lifestyle: If your dog is highly active or very sedentary, its important to ask your vet how much exercise your dog needs to keep them occupied, out of trouble and healthy.

โžก๏ธ Infections, parasites and vaccinations: Your vet will discuss your dogs needs so you have a regular treatment plan in place.

โžก๏ธ Behaviour: Is your dog socialising well? How is behavior and toilet training going? We can help with lots of tips and tricks in these areas.

โžก๏ธ Nutrition: Your dog's nutrition as they transition from puppy to adult dog is very important. You vet will discuss the best diet for your dog based on their genetics, breeding, size and lifestyle.

โžก๏ธ Dental health: Now that your dog is almost past the puppy teeth stage, its important to make sure their teeth are healthy and are growing correctly. This is the prime stage for dogs to chew on everything. So feel free to ask us for some advice around safe chew toys.

โžก๏ธ Reproductive health: Your vet will discuss your options for desexing your dog, including recommended timelines and options available, including chemical desexing.

As every breed is so different, your vet will also provide breed-specific advice to make sure you are across any potential health issues or conditions.

Have you recently celebrated your dog's first birthday? To schedule your pet's health check, book online via www.bryantsroadvet.com or call our vet clinic today on 07 3801 1744.

For a cat, a visit to the vet can be a pretty overwhelming experience. Being confined to a carrier, travelling in a car, and then being surrounded by other animals and their noises and smells creates an anxiety-inducing situation for cats.

So itโ€™s little wonder when they know itโ€™s time to see the vet that they may run off and hide!

However, a stress-free vet visit for your cat is possible! Find out 5 things you can do to minimise stress for your cat during their next appointment: https://bryantsroadvet.com/5-steps-to-a-stress-free-vet-visit-for-your-cat/

As well as choosing a vet clinic that has a focus on a fear-free environment, there are also a few things you can do to achieve a stress-free vet visit for your cat.

There is currently a worldwide shortage of cat vaccines, which is impacting our supply levels. We have a small amount of vaccines available that we are reserving for kittens.

We are expecting the supply shortage to resolve in early 2024, however if your cat will be staying at a cattery over the holidays, we can offer an anitbody titre as an alternative.

If you have any questions at all about your cat's vaccinations, please give the clinic a call on 07 3801 1744.

Did you know that heart disease is almost as common in dogs as it is in people?

However, heart disease in dogs isnโ€™t the result of a poor diet or lifestyle like in humans. Itโ€™s typically the result of general wear and tear on the heart as dogs age.

Find out the symptoms, diagnosis and treatment options.

Can you teach an old dog new tricks? Maybe not! But you can keep them nice and healthy with regular six monthly check-ups.

With any animal over seven years old, we recommend regular blood and urine tests to screen for things like diabetes, kidney or liver disease and tumors. These quick and easy tests can find unknown conditions that previously were not identified before they begin to affect your dog's way of life. Being proactive can be the first step in your pet's longevity!

During your senior's health check we also look out for:

๐Ÿ“ˆChronic health conditions
As stated above, diabetes, kidney and liver disease or tumours can all happen without you realising. Having quick blood or urine tests is a fast way to nail any issues before your pet's quality of life is affected.

๐ŸฆทDental disease
Just because your pet is eating like usual doesn't mean there is no issue present. If dental disease is not treated, it can start to affect major organs.

๐Ÿ•Arthritis
As we all get older, we know what it's like to have aches and pains all over, but it's hard for a pet to voice their concerns. During your appointment we will ask if youโ€™ve noticed any behavioural changes, such as a slower walking pace, less activity, or a struggle to get up.

๐Ÿ•Lumps and bumps
These tend to be a part of life when it comes to senior pets. A lot of the time, they are nothing to worry about; however, we will examine them during a health check to make sure they are nothing sinister.

Has it been a while since weโ€™ve seen your senior pet? Schedule them in for their check-up with our experienced vets to ensure theyโ€™re kept in their best health possible. You can book via our website or by calling us on 07 3801 1744.

At Bryants Road Vet, we want to make paying for veterinary care as easy as possible, which is why we offer a variety of different options for payment.

We have teamed up with PetPA to offer Pet Wellness Plans, which allow you to cover much of your pet's healthcare through simple and affordable monthly or annual payments. There are two levels of plans available, which cover vet consults, annual vaccination, flea, tick and worming products, a wellness screen and annual dental allowance.

We also offer:
โ˜‘๏ธ VetPay interest-free payment plans, which is a service that allows you to receive treatment now, and pay back over time with a simple fortnightly payment plan.
โ˜‘๏ธ GapOnly for those with pet insurance through a participating insurance company, which allows you to simply pay the difference between our invoice and then claim the benefit under your policy. There are over 20 insurance companies who partner with GapOnly, including RSPCA, Bow Wow Meow, Australian Seniors, Woolworths Everyway Insurance and Medibank.

If youโ€™d like to know more about any of our payment options, please feel free to pop into the clinic, and we can provide more information.

We understand how hard it can be to make decisions when it comes to the health and well-being of your pet, and we will always strive to offer as much support and advice as possible.

Blood tests are a really important diagnostic tool that we use at the vet clinic, even for pets who appear perfectly healthy.

While a full physical examination and discussion of any behavioural changes can tell us a lot, blood tests can reveal a more complete picture of your petโ€™s health.

Blood tests can help with:

โœ… ๐—˜๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—น๐˜† ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป of health issues before any symptoms appear and become more serious.

At Bryants Road Vet we have an in-house laboratory, which means we can run a wide range of blood tests in our clinic. We also have close relationships with larger labs that can run more specialised tests for us if required.

Has it been a while since your pet has had a check-up? Drop by the clinic at 141 Bryants Road Loganholme or book online via our website to schedule an appointment.

Even though spring has just started, tick season is in full swing.

With our weather being warmer than usual for this time of year, weโ€™ve already seen a number of cats and dogs in our clinic over the past month needing urgent veterinary attention due to tick paralysis.

Check your cat or dog daily for any ticks
โžก Itโ€™s especially important to check your dog immediately after walking in a bushland area
โžก If you find a tick, remove it immediately using pointed tweezers
โžก If your pet shows signs of tick paralysis, including wobbly legs, vomiting or difficulty breathing, take them to your vet immediately
โžก Apply tick prevention products to give your pets a level of protection against ticks
โžก If you purchase a puppy from a breeder, ask if tick prevention has been applied

The Bryants Road Vet team is here to help with advice on the best ways to protect your pets against ticks. During your petโ€™s annual health check, our vets will discuss the best preventative option for your cat or dog, and how often it should be given.

To schedule your petโ€™s health check, book online via our website or call us on 07 3801 1744.

30/08/2023

Welcoming a puppy into your family is a very exciting time, but it does come with some challenges, including toilet training! Be prepared to be in for the long haul. It can take many months for a puppy to be fully house-trained, but the effort is definitely worth it.

There are three golden rules when it comes to toilet training a puppy:

โœ… ๐—–๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐˜†
Puppies thrive on routine, and setting a regular schedule will make toilet training much smoother. Feed them at the same time, take them outside first thing in the morning, after meals, when they wake from a nap, and the last thing at night.

Itโ€™s also important to take them to the same spot outside to relieve themselves, as they will pick up their own scent, and be prompted to do their business.

โœ…
Dogs are very responsive to positive reinforcement. When your puppy toilets outside, acknowledge that theyโ€™ve done a good job. Praise them, give them a treat, play with them, and give them lots of affection. Your puppy will then associate toileting outside with positive things.

When your pup has an accident inside, stay calm and donโ€™t punish them. Simply clean up the floor thoroughly with an enzyme-based cleaner (otherwise the smell will have them returning to the same spot) and continue with your toileting routine.

โœ… ๐—ฃ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ
Puppies need to urinate up to 12 times a day, so be prepared to go outside many, many times during the day and night, particularly when they are quite young. You will need to keep a close eye on their behaviour to see if they need to toilet and look out for signs such as whining, sniffing, circling, barking or scratching at the door.

Crate training is a very popular method to assist with toilet training. Using a crate during their younger months is a great way to teach your puppy not to toilet inside. Dogs naturally want to keep their sleeping and eating areas clean, so crate training helps your puppy establish their own little territory that they donโ€™t want to soil.

Putting in the effort when it comes to toilet training is well worth it. But if training your puppy is taking longer than you expected or need any advice with caring for your new family member, our vets are here to help.
