Assistance Dog Reba and Handler Mandy
It's International Assistance Dogs week!!!
At Empower Assistance Dogs, we celebrate our highly trained assistance dogs everyday but this week is an extra special week for them.
We honour the dedication of these services dogs and we ecognise the special skills they have acquired that make a huge impact to the lives of their handlers.
BIG MIGHTY WOOF to all assistance dogs out there!! 🐶 🐕 🐩
Both Empower Assistance Therapy and Assistance Dogs go through consistent training, regardless their age.
For Assistance Dogs, the training doesn’t end when the trained dogs are transitioned across to their handler as there will always be maintenance training that needs to be done. Ongoing support and development is an important part of the training program that is necessary to ensure that handlers have the help they may need in case their health changes or declines.
Nagoya Eco
3rd city on our tour is Nagoya.
We had Dog Trainer and Groomer students to teach. We had some really great questions from the students throughout the lectures.
Working the dogs is always great to do for the students. We teach them how to be aware of their interactions with the dogs to ensure the dogs are feeling comfortable and happy and we also demonstrate how intelligent dogs really are!
We will miss you Nagoya....until next year! - Craig & Tracey
2nd city on our tour is Osaka.
This city has very special memories for us and always feels like home.
The students from 大阪ECO動物海洋専門学校 were on the Dog Trainer and Pet Management and Hospitality course and they were very engaged- we had a great time working their dogs.
Very innovative dogs to work and really enjoyed our time here!
Hear what our devoted puppy raiser, Brian, has to say about being a part of Empower Assistance Dogs family!
We can't thank you enough for all that you do, Brian!!
Just finished our lectures in Tokyo for Tca東京eco動物海洋専門学校 dog trainer, animal nurse, pet nurses for companion animals and advanced medical care, pet groomer and healthcare, and zoo animal care students.
Fantastic students that asked good questions and the school dogs were a lot of fun to work with!
We also loved seeing some of the exotic species that the zoo student work with and study, some of the animals we would never see in Australia.
Thanks to the amazing staff and interpreters for making this another wonderful visit!
What a fantastic 2 days at the Gold Coast Marathon last weekend! We thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the activity lawn, greeting new and familiar faces, and spreading joy with our four-legged friends! We hope their unconditional love made a difference!
Until next year - keep running and stay paws-itive! 🐾🏃♀️💕 #GoldCoastMarathon #JoyOfRunning #PawsitiveVibe #Marathonsupport #therapydogs
Practice makes perfect! 🐾

Empower Assistance Dogs First Visit to St Andrews, sponsored by Patinos Lawyers
Choppa, the therapy dog, delivering a dose of joy to patients and staff at St Andrew's War Memorial Hospital last Monday! 💕
Thank you, Patinos Personal Lawyers - with Michelle joining us for the visit, for enabling us to turn an ordinary day into a special one. Your support is lighting up faces, one wagging tail at a time! 🐾 #SpreadJoy #TherapyDog #Labrador #Empowerassistancedogs
Both Therapy and Assistance dogs have the same puppy training of basic commands and of being well-socialised.
Assistance dog training can start anywhere from 10 weeks to 18 months and concentrates on teaching the dog specific tasks to aid a handler with a disability.
Therapy dog training emphasises the dog being calm, friendly, and enjoying interacting with people.
Thanks to Ange Costes Photography for Gypsy the Therapy Dog's adorable photo!
