It's fitting at the time we launch the 2024 Tasmanian Yearling Sale that David Chester is checking out Mystic Journey's first foal, a filly by Kizuna. David was the auctioneer when Mystic Journey sold to Trinder Racing & Wayne Roser in 2017. Betty is now in Japan at Northern Farm!

"Blue light from individual light masks directed at a single eye advances the breeding season in mares" Murphy, B.A., et al. (2014), Equine Vet J, 46: 601-605. https://doi.org/10.1111/evj.12153

Breeding season is just around the corner, and it may be time to think about preparing mares for owners wishing for an early 2025 foal. One way to hasten ovulation is through the use of blue light.

The natural melatonin secretion in horses is reduced as the daylight increases. When melatonin decreases, it stimulates the release of FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) and luteinizing hormone, promoting the development of ovarian follicles. It is possible that blue light from individual light masks, directed at one eye, may initiate this process earlier and advance the timeline of the typical breeding season in mares.

When blue light masks were placed on mares in November, 50% of mares began to ovulate in January, with 90% ovulating in February. Not only did they ovulate early, the use of masks may be cheaper than the traditional use of barn lights. Housing mares outside reduces the cost of bedding, labor, and energy costs. Beyond economic benefits, mares may be turned out in pastures instead of being stressed from stalling practices. Plus, they look cute!

It is time to reflect on the season of 2023 and think about what worked, what didn't and some solutio...

Weekend catch up

This week I'm only working two nights. I still have one to go. A few of the ladies are overdue as we work off a 399 day gestation not a 345, and I have noticed the weather has an affect on Pop-time. The foal is the ultimate one to decide when to be born, but Mum can have some influence to exactly wh...

Not all foaling's has a smooth result. Not all issues are apparent immediately. One mare has developed complications two weeks post foaling. One of my girls developed colic symptoms, two weeks post foaling. This is a concern. I have lost my own mare about this time post foaling, and was left with an...
