Are your pets afraid of fireworks? 🎆🙀

It’s the time of year where fireworks are around and that can create a lot of fear for our pets.
Some things you can do to limit stress for your pet during fireworks are;
- keep your cats and dogs inside with you.
- exercise your dogs well prior to scheduled fireworks.
- let them be with you, remain calm and go about your usual activities. Fussing over them can sometimes worsen the behaviour by rewarding it or assuring there’s a real fear they should be concerned about.
- cover your birds and if possible, move to a quiet and dark place.
- reward calm behaviour
- create a quiet and safe place for them to hide if they choose
- never punish them for being fearful
- close doors, windows and blinds to reduce visual stimuli
- offer distractions and games
-use appeasing hormones such as D.A.P for dogs or Feliway for cats.
- ensure your pets microchip details are up to date on the registry
- visit the vet and get a script for some sedatives (these cannot be issued over the counter, or if we have never seen your pet or haven’t seen your pet within the past few months)

Phew it’s been a warm couple of days, with Wednesday shaping up to be just as hot (or hotter).
It’s important to help your pets keep cool, make sure they have shade and access to plenty of water.

Some tips to help keep your pet heat safe.

- walk your dog early morning or later in the day to prevent them overheating. Remember the road and footpaths can remain hot too, don’t want any burnt paws! Avoid strenuous activities, especially in brachycephalic breeds.
- if possible, bring them inside.
- never leave them in a hot car, even with window down.
- freeze large ice cubes to place in water to keep cooler longer.
- bunnies don’t do well in the heat. It’s best to bring them in if possible or freeze water bottles that they can lay next to.
- check on them during the day
- provide extra water bowls or let them play in water (water play should be supervised)
- allow access to tiled areas inside, cats and dogs often like to lay on them to cool themselves
- dogs or cats that have areas of skin exposed or white hair are at risk for sunburn and skin cancers, you can buy pet safe sunscreen to protect their skin.
- keep birds out of direct sunlight, aviaries exposed to direct sunlight can also get quite hot. Ensure they have plenty of fresh water.

If your pet is showing signs of heat stress, please contact us immediately. Signs may include; excessive panting, restlessness, agitation, very red gums, mental confusion, respiratory stress, dizziness or staggering, seizures, collapse and little to no urine production.

Today we remember all who fought and died for our country, and the animals who served.

They shall grow not old,
as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them,
nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun
and in the morning
We will remember them.

Lest we forget

It’s bio time! 🐾
This week featuring Ashleigh, one of our senior nurses.

Ashleigh Porter
Cert IV Veterinary Nursing
Ashleigh has been working with animals for over 20 years, but has been veterinary nursing since the start of 2007. With the teachings of her mother who is also a veterinary nurse, Ashleigh quickly adapted to a nursing role as she spent much of her childhood in veterinary clinics.

She has spent a majority of her time in small GP clinic, but has worked as a GP nurse in an emergency/specialist centre, where she also worked the occasional emergency shifts.

Ashleigh joined the team at Lorn Veterinary Hospital mid 2023, returning to a small clinic GP role which she adores doing most. She also recently set up our Facebook which she manages to help us connect with our clients.

In her days here at the clinic, Ashleigh can be found coffee in hand, cracking jokes with her colleagues (and the odd client!) and resisting the urge to keep giving our clinic cat snacks. Having a natural affinity with cats, she has become our go to cat person. Calling the central coast home, she lives with her young family, 3 cats and 4 rainbow lorikeets but has owned a variety of small animals over the years.

In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her son, watching comedies and documentaries, learning meteorology and of course…drinking coffee.
