An update on our little yearling c**t who cut his leg on the 22nd November.

You may have seen our post yesterday with the before photo.
This is what it looks like after just 3 weeks and 2 days on COMPETE and MEGA BUILD!

Thankfully this was just a superficial cut and there was no internal damage but anyone who prepares Thoroughbred yearlings for sales knows how much a small blemish can affect your price.

It is unlikely that there will be any sign of this come sales time. 🎉

Horses! 😫
This yearling c**t got himself into a bit of a pickle somewhere in a paddock i thought was safe!....As they do!

All my horse are raised on COMPETE so they have a head start anyway when it comes to having a healthy immune system.

This guy was immediately started on Mega Build as well and of course the vet was called and the wound was treated accordingly.

After 2 and 1/2 weeks, the wound looked significantly better.

I will post a photo tomorrow of what it looks like now.

𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐎𝐧 𝐄𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐆𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐔𝐥𝐜𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐲𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐞 (𝐄𝐆𝐔𝐒) 𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐔𝐥𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐬.

It's estimated that up to 90% of performance horses may have some form of gastric ulcers, while around 60% of leisure horses can also be affected. The prevalence can vary based on factors like diet, management practices, and stress levels.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐄𝐆𝐔𝐒?
Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome involves lesions in a horse's stomach and can affect performance and health.

There are 2 areas of the stomach where gastric ulcers can occur.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 of the stomach is responsible for acid secretion. It also contains protective coating that keeps the stomach lining from being damaged. Its when this protective coating is compromised that ulcers can occur. This is often caused by the over use of NSAIDS like Bute.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐧-𝐠𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 portion is the upper part of the stomach which functions as a mixer for stomach contents. This part of the stomach does not contain the protective elements of the glandular part. Ulcers here are commonly linked to dietary factors, such as high-grain diets and infrequent feeding.

It is usually in the non-glandular section of the stomach that ulcers appear.

There is also 𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐠𝐮𝐭 𝐮𝐥𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐬. At this stage there is no way to accurately diagnose these.

𝐂𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐬:
⭐ High grain diets
⭐ Infrequent feeding (horses should ideally not have an empty stomach for longer than 4 hrs)
⭐ Stress (training, travel)
⭐ Certain medications (like Bute )
⭐ Stable confinement

𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐅𝐨𝐫:
👉 Poor appetite or weight loss
👉 Dull coat and lethargy
👉 Behavioural changes (girthiness, irritability)
👉 Mild colic and digestive issues
👉 Increased salivation or teeth grinding

𝐃𝐢𝐚𝐠𝐧𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐬:
Gastroscopy is the only definitive way to diagnose EGUS.

𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭:
✅Medications like omeprazole.
✅Dietary changes: frequent feeding, adding alfalfa, reducing grain.
✅Management adjustments: reduce stress, provide pasture turnout.
✅Prevention Tips:
✅Maintain a consistent feeding schedule.
✅Minimise stress.
✅Use medications like Bute cautiously.
✅Include a good quality probiotic and gut health product like𝐆𝐀𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐎 𝐆𝐎 in your horses daily feed.
✅Feed a small, calcium rich feed before work or travel.

Back in August he was fully rugged, getting 2 packed tubs of hay, grazing and a hard feed daily.

We started feeding 'Compete' in October.

Chunk hasn’t had a rug on for a couple of months now. He’s just been scrubbing it in the paddock and getting a small bucket of hay most days with a dipper of chaff to mix his Compete in at night.

He looks amazing on less feed! Needless to say we’re pretty happy with the results. It’s cheaper, easier and far more effective than what we were doing before."
