🐉 Sunshine, Scales, and a Lesson in Bone Health ☀️
Meet Kaido—a curious little bearded dragon who loves basking in the sun in his adorable harness, right under the watchful eye of his human.
This is because his human is aware that reptiles need direct UVB light, which is what they get from unfiltered sunlight. If they don’t get adequate UVB light, they can become very unwell.
One common condition that 𝐃𝐫 𝐓𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐚𝐧𝐲 consults on regularly with reptile owners is 𝐌𝐄𝐓𝐀𝐁𝐎𝐋𝐈𝐂 𝐁𝐎𝐍𝐄 𝐃𝐈𝐒𝐄𝐀𝐒𝐄. Owners notice increased lethargy, sleeping more, eating less, and moving with a bit of a wobble.
After a thorough exam, Dr Tiffany can diagnose this condition and create a treatment plan to get them back to full health. MBD happens when reptiles don’t get the right balance of calcium, phosphorus, vitamin D3, and—crucially as mentioned before—UVB light.
Often, just an old UVB bulb is the cause of the problem, or getting access to sunlight through a glass window, which blocks those vital UVB rays.
👉 The good news?
With the right care, MBD can be treated—especially when caught early. Dr Tiffany helps owners with these environmental changes, including setting up a new UVB light inside the enclosure (no mesh lids or plastic barriers), introducing a calcium-only supplement without vitamin D3, and a diet tailored to your reptile's needs. We also recommended 30 minutes of direct, unfiltered sunshine (harnessed and supervised, of course!) at least 3 times a week.
Here’s what we want you to take this post:
☀️Reptiles need direct UVB light—either from a high-quality bulb (changed every 6–9 months) or from real, unfiltered sunlight.
🦎Not all supplements are created equal. Your scaly friend needs calcium without vitamin D3 plus a good multivitamin, tailored to their species.
🕶️Glass, plastic, and mesh block UVB—so basking indoors by the window doesn't cut it.
🩺Regular check-ups with a vet that has studied veterinary exotic medicine (every 6–12 months) can help catch issues before they become serious.
Your reptile might not be able to tell you something’s wrong—but changes in their bones, appetite, or behaviour are often their way of waving a red flag. 💡
If you're unsure about your reptile’s UV setup, supplements, or diet, we’re here to help. Book in for a husbandry check or chat with 𝐃𝐫 𝐓𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐚𝐧𝐲, our reptile and exotics vet. Like Kaido, your little lizard deserves a life full of sunshine and strong, healthy bones.
