Come on ‘ Let’s get behind Emma to ban 1080

I just attempted to ban #1080 poison - but the Liberal/National Government, Labor and The Greens opposed my amendment, instead supporting the continued use of this vile and indiscriminate poison.

Any animal that ingests 1080 poison will suffer a slow, agonising death that starts with vomiting, anxiety, disorientation and shaking, followed by frenzied running, screaming fits, and seizures that can last up to 48 hours before their eventual death.

1080 is not only incredibly inhumane, it is also indiscriminate in the carnage it creates. Anybody who claims to be dedicated to protecting native animals needs to hear this - extensive research has shown that native species are not immune to 1080 and are especially vulnerable to the poison in south-eastern Australia.

Companion animals are also at risk - I regularly get calls to my office from devastated families who have lost dogs to 1080.

1080 poison is colourless, odourless and tasteless, there is no antidote, and research suggests only a tiny amount - less than 1 milligram - can kill a small child. Australia is one the last places in the world that still uses 1080.

I told Parliament today, “for any member in this place that votes against this amendment, then I encourage you to go online and watch a video of an animal dying of 1080 poison. We have a duty in this place to know what we are voting to continue to allow- and if you vote to allow the continued use of this poison then you should be fully knowledgeable of the effect this poison has on animals. I warn you it will be one of the worst animal cruelty videos you have ever seen. But this is an important issue- and not one that should be voted on blindly.”

I also attempted to outlaw Pindone poison, a variety of poisons used to kill birds and Calicivirus. The Government’s Bill also watered down the current oversight processes surrounding the use of these dangerous lethal poisons, opening the door for the EPA to approve the use of even more cruel poisons against vulnerable animals, in an even greater range of circumstances. I tried to remove the changes that would see less oversight of the use of poisons like 1080, but again the Liberal/National Government, Labor and the Greens voted against my amendment- meaning the laws on the use of these terrifying poisons will have even less oversight.

The Animal Justice Party is the only political party fighting to end the mass suffering and cruel deaths caused by these dangerous and irresponsible poisons. That’s why we need more people representing animals in Parliament. We are outnumbered now- but we won’t be forever.

We will keep fighting- we will ban this poison. Not if, but when.

No part of this year has been easy. But at the AJP we remained completely committed to animals. We are making a difference. Reflecting on my team’s wins (and these are just a few!) makes me realise what we can achieve when we work together for the animals.

Thank you Louise C, Tess V and Rosie R – your combined strength, intelligence and persistence is extraordinary.

But we’re not done yet. We are fully aware there is so much more to do.

2022 is just around the corner. Let's finish the year with an extra push for animals. Let's demand change. Let's rise fearlessly and speak out against injustice.

For the animals- let's do this!
