What an awesome weekend away tracking in Townsville!

Sam and Ell both came away with excellent passes and a qualification towards their Tracking Dog title.

It doesn’t matter how long it takes you to get to your goal just as long as you’re moving towards it!

We want to say a massive thank you to the Canine Obedience Club of Townsville Inc for putting on such a well run event and for making us feel apart of the crew! Thank you to the judges Debbie Schmidt and Roel Wittkamp for taking the time out of their busy schedules to follow us around the paddock dodging cow paddy’s!

If you own multiple dogs it’s OK to walk one dog at a time….in fact, we insist on it!

Whilst being able to walk multiple dogs at the same time is a fantastic goal to have, you shouldn’t feel bad for walking just one dog at a time!

Here a just a few benefits of walking your dogs separately:

1. Individual Attention: Walking your dogs separately allows you to give each dog individual attention and focus on their specific needs. This can help strengthen the bond between you and each dog.

2. Training Opportunities: You can work on training exercises and commands with each dog without distractions from the other dog. This can be especially helpful if one dog has specific behavior issues to address.

3. Exercise Needs: Each dog may have different exercise needs based on their age, breed, and health condition.

4. Behavioral Issues: If one of your dogs exhibits behavioral problems, walking them separately can help manage and address these issues more effectively.

Our own current pack of dogs are all at different stages of life and training.
⭐️ One dog needs short, structured walks to learn the value of his owners,
⭐️ Others have perfected their craft and now get to enjoy a more relaxed walk,
⭐️ And others require minimal walks as they receive enough physical and mental work during daily training.

❇️ Can we walk all the dogs together??
✅ Yes, but we rarely do!

🐕‍🦺 We enjoy being able to spend quality, one on one time walking our dogs and that’s something you can achieve as well!

🤔 Who’s ever said the following sentence?

🤦‍♀️ ‘My dog listen’s to me at home, but not when we’re out and about!’

This is totally normal dog behaviour and something we definitely work on at Mackay K9!!

🪜 Fact is, building your value under distraction, takes time and consistency. We have to start small and work our way up the distraction ladder.

Two of the most important steps we can take are:

⭐️ Building valuable reward systems, so not only can we capture and build value in the behaviours that we like, but also build value in YOU 🫵

⭐️ Creating a solid foundation of Obedience so your dog has known and reinforced behaviours to fall back to!!

Mother Nature is always going to be there to throw in distractions 🐿️👀 so let’s try to even the playing field!!

Here we see Miss Frankie, who was once super dog reactive working on her stay and recall at the beach!!

🐾 Thinking about crate training your dog? Here are some positive benefits to consider:

1️⃣ Safety and Security: A crate provides a safe space for your dog to retreat to when they need a break or when you're not home.
2️⃣ Toilet Training Aid: Crates can help with toilet training by teaching your dog to hold their bladder and only go outside.
3️⃣ Travel Convenience: Crates make traveling with your dog easier and safer, whether it's a trip to the vet or a road trip.
4️⃣ Reduces Anxiety: Many dogs find comfort and security in their crate, especially during stressful situations.
5️⃣ Prevents Destructive Behavior: Crates can help prevent your dog from chewing on furniture or getting into things they shouldn't.

Overall, crate training can be a positive and beneficial tool for both you and your furry friend!

This is such a great message!

It is one of my most loved and hated sayings!
But it is so true!

You don’t get the dog you want, you get the dog you need!

Often I think l to myself, “I really didn’t need a psychopath in my life, but here I am” 😂
And secretly I love it…. Most days 😂

Beautiful Leo has just finished the one on one portion of his program and is now off to join our group classes!!

Having the ability to communicate with your dog and your dog see value in engaging with you is so important before moving to higher levels of distraction such as group class.

We start this by training in low distraction areas such as the back yard or structured environments like the Training Centre before progressing on to areas such as the Botanical Gardens or the Beach 🌊

We can’t wait to see you at class Leo!!

🌟 An integral part of behaviour modification and one of the many foundation behaviours we work on at Mackay K9 is Loose Leash Walking!!

🐾 Loose leash walking is such a valuable skill that will make your walks so much more enjoyable and safe for both you and your dog.

🐾 When your dog learns to walk on a loose leash, they won’t pull, lunge, or drag you around. This prevent’s injuries, frustration, and stress for both of you and your dog.

🐾 Loose leash walking also teaches your dog to pay attention to you and follow your cues, which improves your communication and bond.

🐾 Additionally, loose leash walking can help your dog behave better around other dogs, people, and distractions, as they learn to trust you and stay calm.

If you’re having trouble taking your dog for a calm and relaxed walk around the park, then reach out for some more info on how we can help!!

More than just a Puppy Preschool!!

Besides working on the foundations, one of the fun filled exercises we do with our puppies is teaching them about different surfaces.

🐾 Hoping up,
🐾 Walking over wobbly surfaces,
🐾 Going through the tunnel etc.

This is all in aid of helping to build happy, strong, confident puppies who are not afraid of trying new surfaces we’ll come across is our everyday lives such as stairs, bridges, ramps etc.

Spots are filling fast for our next round of MK9 Puppy Preschools starting on Sunday 25th at 7.30am and Wednesday 6th of March at 6.30pm. Each course runs for 5 weeks so if you have welcome a new furry family member or are expecting one in the next couple of weeks, reach out for more info or to book your spot!!

Happy Training ✌️

2024 has started off with a bang‼️

After the cyclone last week we weren’t sure we would be able to make the seminar in Brisbane but after some cancelled, rescheduled and then rebooked flights, thankfully we made it, just a day late!

We’ve spent an amazing 3 days with the world renowned dog trainer and coach, Mia Skogster.
Mia has won the IGP world championships with two dogs and is a six time world championship medalist!

We worked on new and advanced training techniques, emotional connections and different way to communicate using voice and body language with our dogs.

We have come away with loads of new information that we can’t wait to not only implement it into our own training, but in to yours as well to help achieve the ultimate engagement with our dogs!

Thank you Fenrir Dogsports for organising a fantastic weekend!

🌀 Does your pet have an emergency plan? 🌀

Pets are part of our families, and it’s up to us to protected them in case of an emergency. It's so important we have an emergency plan in place not just for ourselves but for our pets as well should we need to enact one.

Here are some steps you can take to prepare your pet for an emergency:

- Make sure your pet has a collar with an ID tag and a microchip with your current contact information.
- Have a pet carrier or crate ready for each pet, and train them to feel comfortable inside it.
- Pack a pet emergency kit with food, water, bowls, medications, toys, blankets, and any other items your pet may need.
- Identify a safe place where you can take your pet in case you have to evacuate, such as a friend's house, a hotel, or a shelter that accepts pets.
- Keep a list of emergency contacts for your pet, such as your veterinarian, local animal control, and animal welfare organisations.
- During the storm bring your pet inside, wind can blow down fences and you’d be surprised what a dog can get through, over or under when they’re scared.
-Enrichment, get some Kongs ready so your dogs have something to do whilst spending time inside.

Why good helper dogs are so important!!

Little Miss Maxi really struggles being in new locations, seeing new distractions and hearing new noises. Her first reaction is to bark and then try to run and hide….at full pace.

However today, with the display of confidence and calmness from our helper dog Ona, Maxi was able to settle really quickly and feed off Ona’s body language and energy. Mimicry in dogs is massive, and having a good role model goes such a long way in helping our dogs learn how to handle different scenarios.

We really couldn’t do this job without them! ❤️

We love helping our amazing puppies achieve amazing results.

The first 12 months of a puppies life are really hard, there’s the biting, the chewing, the digging!!!!

But there’s also all these incredible moments and opportunities to develop the dog you want your pup to be!!

Miss Ellie is in training to become a Therapy Dog, and although she can’t get certified until she’s 12 months old, there’s a whole heap of work we can do to get her prepared for that day!!

Happy Training Ellie, we can wait to watch your journey!

At Mackay K9, we don’t just talk the talk, we walk the walk!!

You would think that being dog trainers we’d have loads of time to train our own dogs!! But the truth is we’re just like you, we work crazy hours, we run small businesses, we have kids, families and outside commitments.

Most mornings we are up by 4am to train our own dogs.

Why??

To move closer to our goals!

Finding time to train your dog can be difficult but remember nothing changes, if nothing changes!

Recently Laura and Monty began doing some private coaching sessions in preparation for the 2024 trial year, we are so glad to be along for the ride 😍

Check out Monty’s progress with bow 🙇‍♀️

Meet Popsy! This beautiful little Jack Russel is learning how to safely be involved in her very big world.

Living and working on a farm comes with its hazards, especially for little dogs who may like to chase cattle. So Popsy’s owners have been working really hard to teach her the way to behave and safely integrate into their everyday working life, from riding on the buggy, to tethering at the cattle yards whilst she’s still young.

A big part of our training programs are about training your dog how to be a part of your every day life. Whether you live in a city apartment or out on land, our goal is for your dog to love and live your everyday life with you.

Let’s talk about puppies 🐶

Desensitization for puppy‼️

What is it❓❓

Desensitization is a process of gradually exposing a puppy to new stimuli, such as sounds, sights, smells, people, animals, and situations, in a way that does not cause fear or anxiety. The goal is to help the puppy become comfortable and confident in different environments and with different stimuli. Desensitization should start as early as possible, preferably during the socialization period (between 3 and 16 weeks of age), when the puppy is more open and curious about new experiences.

Over the last few weeks, we have been working very hard to make sure Jovi gets very comfortable with being groomed! Bath time, blow-drying, toenail trims, ear cleaning and teeth checks are all important everyday skills!

‼️Tips for helping your puppy enjoy grooming time:

🫧Choose a comfortable and quiet place for grooming, where your puppy won't be distracted or stressed by other noises or people

🛁Use your pups meal as treats during the process

🪮Use gentle and appropriate tools for your puppy's coat type and size, such as a soft-bristled brush, a comb, or a slicker brush

☕️Have regular breaks this will help your puppy recover from the stress

⏳Do short sessions daily - no more than 5 minutes

What a weekend!!

Over the weekend we hosted Gay Westmore from the Rockhampton Obedience Club to learn more about trailing in ANKC Nose Work.

We had an amazing group of our clients and their dogs attend the 2 day event, they all walked away with a better understanding of trailing and are all pumped to continue working in 2024!

We want to say a massive thank you to Gay for taking the time to share her knowledge with us and a massive thank you to our clients! We are all about building a community of supportive, like-minded people and that is exactly what we have achieved! So thank you all for continuing to motivate us to do better ❤️
