Over the weekend our Comp Crew travelled down to Rocky to compete in a scent work trial held by the Rockhampton Dog Obedience Club💚

Over the 2-day trial our teams achieved
⭐️ 20 qualifications 📜
⭐️ 2x 2nd place 🥈
⭐️ 2x 3rd place 🥉

It was such a great way to start the season! Fantastic work guys! Now to get ready for the next one 🤓

The 90% rule for your puppy

We all know that our puppies can create havoc in our homes, toileting, chewing and steeling things that don’t belong to them are just some of the delightful behaviours that come along with puppy ownership.

Puppies will be puppies!
We have a 90% rule in our household

If you cannot give your puppy 90% of your focus, then the puppy needs to be put in a safe zone - either their crate or puppy playpen.

Why?

Because if your puppy is in the safe zone then they can’t get into too much mischief, which means you're not discovering a poo up the hallway or toilet paper pulled off the toilet roll!

Managing you puppy isn’t a bad thing!

So, the next time your kids come to you an ask for help with their homework or you start to cook dinner, or you jump into the shower put your puppy in their crate or playpen so you don’t come out to a surprise💩

Our latest crop of MK9 Preschool graduates!! 🎓

Even with a couple puppies away today, watching these super cool pups and their families go from strength to strength each week has been a heartwarming sight!

From basic commands to proper socialisation and desensitisation, puppy preschool lays the foundation for a well-rounded, happy dog. It's a fun and interactive way to ensure your little one grows into a confident companion!

We have had one spot become available at our next preschool starting on Saturday 22nd at 8.30am.

Welcome Hughie!! 💙

At only 18 weeks old this cool little Blue Heeler has come to us to help address his intense urge to chase cars and bark at other dogs.

So what do we do?

We focus on developing positive alternative behaviors. It wouldn’t be fair to simply tell Hughie not to bark at dogs or chase cars without showing him what behaviors he can engage in instead. That’s where training plays a vital role.

He’s already showing remarkable progress, and we’re so excited to see him and his owner continue on this training journey!

MK9 Comp Crew hard at work!!

With the first trial of the season only a few weeks away we were very fortunate to gain access to an industrial estate which gave us a fantastic opportunity to train our dogs in an unfamiliar environment.

With so many different surfaces, textures and smells they all worked incredibly hard to find the odour source we had planted.

Proofing our dogs training and our own handling skills in new areas is so important as we never know what the competition area is going to look like.

The first step to helping your dog be comfortable at the vets begins at home!

Beautiful Yoki has always been very wary of people, even as a young pup she didn’t like anyone but mum touching her. As you can imagine, this makes vet visits a little tense.

So what are some things we’re working on?

Handling Techniques: The vet hold, we always encourage you to handle and support your dog during vet visits whenever possible.

Calmness: Dogs can pick up on your energy! If you’re chill, they’re more likely to be chill too.

Muzzle training (if needed): If your dog gets nervous or reactive, a muzzle can help keep everyone safe.

Remember, a little preparation goes a long way in making vet visits less stressful for both you and your pup.

Buckling up in the car is just as important for our dogs as it is for us. Whether it’s a crate, harness, or seatbelt, make sure your pet is safe and sound on every adventure.

Here’s George who’s all ready for the trip home after his lesson at the training centre!!

🐾 Crates or seatbelts keep your pup safe and secure, reducing distractions while you drive.
🚙 Crates can provide a comfy, familiar space for your dog to chill out during the ride.
🐾 Crate training can help reduce anxiety in dogs, making car trips a breeze!
🚙 Restraint stops your dog from being able to jump straight out the car door as soon as it’s open.

Update on MK9 Raw Shop Trading Hours!

We are pleased to announce that starting on March 18th the MK9 Raw Shop will open our doors for trading on Tuesdays. In lieu of opening on Tuesdays, as of this weekend we will now be closed on Sundays.

These changes are designed to streamline our trading hours and to make our store more accessible to you. Thank you so much for your continued support!

Why do we love scent work?
Because any dog can do it!!

With our first Scent Work trial of the year just over a month away, the Comp Crew has been hard at work preparing our dogs for the various scenarios they may encounter during the trial.

We are incredibly fortunate to have access to the offices of Mackay Advocacy Inc., which allows us to simulate an Interior search environment.

In a room filled with potential hiding spots, we work on developing search patterns and focusing on our ability to read our dogs’ body language and behaviour. We’re learning to recognise when they’re on odour and the various ways they may indicate it, depending on where the odour is hidden.

We also work on our leash handling skills and body positioning to ensure we don’t obstruct our dogs' access to the scent which are all essential skills we’re able to refine in this controlled setting.

We are super excited to see what our Comp Crew achieve this year, and weather we come away with a first place or last, we’re in the ring giving it a go and enjoying every nerve wracking, nail biting second 😂🙌

Who’s going to be the bestest boy?

Welcome Teddy!! At only 16 weeks of age and already onto his 3rd home we are super excited to help his new family adjust to the life of living with a Cocker Spaniel.

Teddy has a few unique traits that we're going to help his new family in addressing to make sure we’re ticking all of the boxes of mental, genetic, and physical fulfilment.

By ensuring our puppies are satisfied in these areas, we will have happy, healthy, satiated pups and reduce the likelihood of destructive behaviours.

Introducing our very first Puppy Preschool graduates of 2025!

A big congratulations to Arlo, Audrey, Coco, Yuki, Penny, and Akira for all your accomplishments over the past five weeks.

Each week, we've witnessed these puppies grow, develop, and learn foundational skills, including stay, recall, sit, drop, stand, place, tethering, leave it, play, and loose-leash walking.

Remember, preschool is just the start, and it's essential to keep learning and practicing these new skills.

We’re excited to see what the next 12 months hold for these amazing puppies!

Proud Trainer Moment!!

We have had the absolute pleasure of working with Tali and her owner Claire since she was 10 weeks old.

It was always a long term goal that Tali would become a Therapy Dog to work alongside Claire in her own work, and this year they’ve taken another huge step and joined the incredible team at the Mackay Base Hospital.

So if you happen to be up there keep an eye out for this amazing team who we are sure are going to bring many smiles and loads of comfort to those who need it most!!

A huge congratulations to Tali and Clair on this massive achievement, from all the team at Mackay K9 Training!!

Did you know that playtime can be our puppy's secret superpower!!

Playing is essential for our puppies development and we can build it to be an extremely valuable reward system that bring loads of extra value to you too!

Puppies learn social skills, build confidence, and even get their exercise while having a blast. Here we have Rusty who currently attends our MK9 Preschool, and absolutely loves chasing, catching and playing tug with this towel and his owner!!

Socialisation doesn’t mean letting your pup meet every other dog and person you come across!

However, getting your pup out and about safely before they're 16 weeks old is super important as it helps them become well-adjusted adults.

Exposing them to new sights, sounds, and smells is key! Plus, it’s a great chance for you to bond and build value in you rather than all the other distractions around you.

Beautiful Ralph has come to us from a working property. Coming from such strong working lines means Ralph has a huge predisposition to chase things that move!! We get asked quiet often why we don’t offer just group classes, and the answer is that until you have an open line of communication, until you have valuable reward systems, and until you can get focus and engagement in a one on one scenario, it’s going to be very difficult for you and your dog to achieve it in a group class environment. One of the most important behaviours we can teach our pups is Recall!! At our current MK9 Wonder Pup Preschool, our puppies are learning that recall is just a game, but it’s a game that we structure so that we’re always the winners, although our pup’s think they are!! One of the most requested behaviours we get asked to help with is teaching our dogs to walk on a loose leash. Loose leash walking is 100% achievable, however it takes time, consistency and valuable reward systems. When we have the ability to capture and build value in wanted behaviours our dogs are far more likely to show us that behaviour. Who wants a Bear update😍 Check out Bear working on his recalls in the park. When we start working on our recalls it is always done on a long line! Why?? The more times your dog or puppy finds reinforcement in the outside world the lower your value goes! We need to make sure if our dog makes the wrong decision, we can help them make the right one! What we look for in a longline: Length: Approx 10m in length Attachment: A size appropriate clip - Small dog = small clip, Large dog = large clip Durable Material: Look for lines made from strong materials like nylon or Biothane. These materials are resistant to wear and tear. Biothane is waterproof and easy to clean.
