Happy Birthday to our retiring Queen Ashanti Oriental & Siamese Cattery Australia Nastassia (aka Petal). She’s 5 today 😻

She had two litters at Jakellary Siamese & Oriental Pedigree Kittens and two with us here at Sandford.

It would be remiss of me not to thank both Jeanie and Bek for entrusting me to love her, but more so for breeding and raising one of the nicest cats ever!

There is not a bad bone in this girls body and it shows through her kittens, some of you now love at your place.

She has her first ever SA show this Sunday to celebrate the Siamese Cat Club SA annual event 😻

Oriental cats typically have green eyes due to the genetics tied to their coat and breed lineage. Here's why:

🌿 The Science Behind the Green Eyes
Genetic Influence
The Oriental cat is a close relative of the Siamese, and most Orientals carry the same basic gene structure. However, unlike Siamese cats—who often have blue eyes due to their colourpoint genes—Orientals come in many solid and patterned coat colours without the "pointed" gene, which allows other eye colours to express.

Green Eye Gene Expression
In Orientals with solid or patterned coats (non-pointed), the genetic pathways responsible for eye pigmentation aren't blocked. This allows eumelanin (a dark pigment) and lipochrome (a yellow pigment) to mix in the iris, often producing rich shades of green, from jade to emerald.

Breed Standards
Most breed standards (like CFA or TICA) specifically call for vivid green eyes in Oriental Shorthairs—it's considered a signature trait. Breeders select for it generation after generation, reinforcing that glowing green gaze.

In Short:
Oriental cats usually have green eyes because their genes allow full eye pigment expression, and breeders favour it for its striking contrast against their sleek coats and elegant aesthetic.
