Let them sniff 🐾
A dog's nose is more valuable to them than their eyesight. sniffing on a walk is the most enjoyable part of the walk for a dog, for many reasons.
Not letting a dog sniff on a walk would be the same as being forced to wear a blindfold at the cinema πŸ˜…

Dogs can choke on many things: food, toys, basically anything that looks edible or chewable. This can at times be hard to avoid because dogs use their mouths for alot of different reasons.

What a day, the weather was nice and every dog I had a session with was enthusiastic about the training. I've noticed everyone seems to be putting in significant effort, good work everyone πŸΊπŸΎπŸ‘

The look of joy on people's faces when they notice how far their dog has progressed since starting the training really brightens my day

One of my favourite sayings is "Rome wasn't built in a day" you should never expect too much too quick when your expectations of the dogs progression is lowered you actually start to notice how far the dog has come with the training

Say hi to your dog for me 🐾

Winter is over and spring is here.
Encounters with other animals are more frequent this time of year due to two things for the most part.
Many dogs tend to be more excitable and restless during spring, and this can lead to the occasional misunderstanding when interacting with other dogs. Spring often signals mating season and the subsequent birth of the young for many species, which may encourage defensive behaviors in wild animals. Teaching your dog to ignore other dogs or wild animals on a walk is a good way avoid a situation from occurring.

Why is routine important?
Dogs are creatures of habit and the way they feel about the world around them depends on how happy they are in their environment. It is important to establish a routine to give your dog structure and confidence. A dog used to the same things happening at the same time each day, can get worried by change. A routine means that they can predict events, which is so important for their wellbeing and helps to avoid them feeling anxious
This came to mind today because 2 dogs I walk regularly were getting excited for me to rock up so they could go for their walk because it's in their routine that they get walked today and due to me rocking up when they expected we had a very pleasant walk

I walk this girl twice a week and her reaction to me rocking up this morning to take her for a walk made me want to write an appreciation post
she is an 8 year old greyhound with arthritis and was so enthusiastic and excited she was trying to jump on me before the walk even started which never happened before today
The way this girl and dogs in general show their appreciation though enthusiasm is one of the reasons I love my job whether it's training or walking as soon as they see me and the tail starts wagging I know Its going to be a good day 🐾

Hi all just thought id make this post because I get asked about this a lot. Jumping up on people is a natural behaviour for dogs it's their way of saying hello and showing their excitement to see you and they also get attention in the process. Some dogs especially the intelligent, energetic breeds crave attention and will get it by any means. This is important to know because most of us react negatively to attention seeking behavior and that will likely reinforce the dog's actions, or worse break the human animal bond and none of us want this.
The best approach to this behaviour is as soon as the dog jumps up you turn your back. Cross your arms over your chest and do not make a sound if the dog runs around you and tries that again turn the other direction.
Another good method if the first one doesn't work is to remove yourself altogether. If your dog jumps up on you when you walk through the door turn around and go back outside without acknowledging the dog at all
Some dogs my clue onto what's going on quicker than others but just remember Rome wasn't built in a day πŸ™πŸ•πŸ©πŸΎ

I got the go-ahead to start walking dogs again today (recovering from surgery) I thought I was going to get rained on whilst walking an appreciative pair of greyhounds but we beat the rain back I also thought I took a photo but apparently I didn't πŸ˜… it's just one of those days πŸ˜‚

In training

When you see this patch on a dog harness it means the dog is training and the training is important.
Generally it means please ignore my dog, the person walking the dog is not being rude. Most of the time this patch means the dog is service training and the best thing you can do for this dog is ignore it like you would a service dog. There's a good chance they are trying to work on the dogs impulse control and directly getting the dogs attention is only going to make the training harder on said dog in training.
By all means talk to the person walking the dog that is actually helpful with the training but the best thing you can do for the dog itself is ignoring it.
