The importance of regular hoof care while horses are spelling and in work

DID YOU KNOW...

-for every 1 centimeter of extra toe length- this results in an extra 50 kilograms of force acting on the tendons

-1 degree drop in sole angle where the DDFT inserts into the coffin bone (affected by Palmar Angle) can lead to a 4% increase in the pressure exerted by the DDFT on the Navicular bone

An off the track thoroughbred with a club foot that I’ve been working on for the last 12 months. Struggled with lameness issues because of the tightness of the extension branch of the suspensory ligament and the lack of sole depth under the tip of the pedal bone; adding a wedges healed shoe helps compress the growth in the heal and reduce the pressure on the toe to promote more growth in the front part of the hoof. Over the last 12 months we’ve been able to balance to hoof capsule better and give the horse a better range of motion!
