Dougal - Trainee Service Dog

On the 22nd of November, my handler and I met with Gwen from Good As Gold Dog Training/Canine Life Skills Coaching to do our Public Access test, of course we passed with flying colours and had a great day. Fast forward to today when we received our official Assistance Dog License 🥳

Massive thanks to Gwen for testing us and providing a little extra guidance whilst she was with us, Alpha Lykos K9 Training and Behaviour for all the training they did with us up until our testing time, and mostly to M&M Companion Retrievers without whom I would never have been paired with my handler Terry and mum Juanita George

What a massive week, worked with Dad all week, then on Thursday night I got to kiss a celebrity Brad Williams, birthday shopping for mum on Friday and now at my first WBBL Cricket game at the WACA. Staff and everyone here have been awesome. We even got seats in the front row on the fence, I might even have e a chance of catching a ball

Some great advice for when training in public, some many bypasses want to stop and say hi, but please be respectful of working teams and don’t interact with the dog unless given permission first.

Today my handler took my on a trip to the airport today in preparation for our first flight next month.

We did lots of new things including going through security, I alerted my handler during him pat down as I could tell he didn’t like it very much, so I got big pats for that. We also visited all the shops and got lots of compliments, I can’t wait to see what goes on inside those big metal birds we watched 😀 🐕‍🦺 🐾 ✈️

Today I went out with my handler and got to witness sword fighting for the first time Balingup Medieval Carnivale was a great experience.

I got to see so many people dressed up in amazing costumes, although we got a lot muddy and I definitely need a bath when I get home🐾🐕‍🦺🐾

🌟 Happy Tuesday, everyone! 🌟 We've been a bit quiet lately, but it's for a great reason! We've been in beautiful Western Australia, working with three of our incredible assistance dogs. 🐾

This is our second time with the lovely Nora, and we're thrilled to have our first one-on-one sessions with Dougal and Toby! 🎉 These amazing pups are smashing their goals. Dougal is gearing up for his first flight, which we anticipate will happen next month! ✈️

This weekend we tried something a little different 😃 We visited Fur Kidz Resort to trial their dedicated indoor heated puppy pool.

I LOVED IT! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 my sister Ruby wasn’t as confident as me, but then she isn’t a Goldador superstar like me 🤩

We will definitely be returning for regular swims, especially during the cold winter days ❄️ 🥶

🌟 **Expressions of Interest: Guardian Home or Short-Term Care for Rory** 🌟

We are looking for a special home for Rory, one of our red fox Labradors. Rory has been with her sibling since birth and is showing some signs of littermate syndrome. To address this, we are seeking someone to care for Rory either short term (2-3 months) or, if desired, long term as a guardian home.

Rory is a very loving girl who thrives on cuddles and human attention. She has a high drive and needs an active home that can provide her with ample mental enrichment, training, and physical exercise. Rory has strong foundations and boundaries, and some time away from her brother will help her learn to interact properly with other dogs.

For now, Rory needs to be placed with a desexed male or an alpha female.

Our beautiful Chloe is visiting from her guardian home.

Chloe lives at Edithburgh about an hour away, and we get to see her frequently. She has the best of both worlds.

Chloe has really come into her own since being with her family. She is much more settled, calm, and attentive.

I love being surrounded by lots and lots of dogs. But that's selfish. These guys need one on one attention and training that i can't provide to all of them.

I'm lucky to be on the farm. I can walk them all at once. But I can't give them enough one on one time that these dogs so crave and deserve.

This is one of the reasons we place our breeding dogs in guardian homes.

Other reasons:
- No kennels for our dogs (I get so upset to know many breeding dogs are kept in kennels for their life)
- Our dogs aren't rehomed after breeding. They are already with their forever family
- the dogs can get out into the world with their humans
- lots of human interaction
- play dates on the farm, they have 2 homes

Our guardian home program here at M&M Companion Retrievers is a little different to most... we cover all costs for the dog, including vaccinations and flea tick treatments, we supply a high-quality raw diet with high-quality ingredients and supplements, and you pay nothing for the dog. When they are retired, we desex, and the dog is yours forever. You do not pay for the dog. The cost to you is your time, love, and dedication to our beloved dogs.

Dogs can sniff out post-traumatic stress. Dogs can be trained to detect stress-related volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in human breath, potentially identifying the onset of PTS flashbacks.

A groundbreaking study utilized two dogs to distinguish between the breath of individuals recalling traumatic experiences and control samples, achieving over 70% accuracy.

This finding suggests that assistance dogs could offer earlier intervention during PTS episodes by detecting specific stress markers, highlighting the potential for more effective PTS management. The study also opens avenues for further research into the biochemical signals associated with PTS symptoms and how dogs can be trained to respond to them.
