It's all about "Beats, Breaths & Business" at this year's ASAV Conference on the Sunshine Coast 🌞
We'd also add "Bones, BloodSTOP and Drill Bits" as found on the Fourlimb stand ... and could elaborate further if the alphabet theme allowed. 🦴🩸

Only a handful of places remain for our orthopaedic surgical wet labs in Melbourne this July!
🟠
Day one, surgical management of ligament and tendon injuries.
Day two, long-bone osteosynthesis using interlocking nails
🔗 https://www.fourlimb.com.au/workshops/
🟠
Learn the principles of surgical management of ligament and tendon injuries using UHMWPE synthetic implants. Learn how these basic principles can be applied to restore function to almost any strain or sprain injury with case reports and publications. Discover the opportunity for arthroscopic treatment of CCL deficiency and the surgical management of multi-ligament stifle trauma. Practise surgical repair techniques including common calcaneal tendon rupture and coxofemoral luxation
🟠
Learn the principles of Interlocking Nail (ILN) osteosynthesis. With both biological and mechanical advantages over plates ILNs are the gold standard for long bone osteosynthesis in humans. Intramedullary insertion lends itself to minimally invasive approaches, with preservation of soft tissues and vascularisation of the periosteum. Their alignment with the anatomical axis of the bone provides mechanical strength in compression, flexion and torsion.

Speaker Dr Thibaut Cachon DVM, Dipl ECVS, MSc, PhD
Specialist surgeon Thibaut works as part of the referral surgery team, and also carrys out research and lectures in the small animal surgical department of the veterinary school of Lyon, France

🔶 Don't miss Novetech's FREE online webinar on 14 May featuring stifle ligament surgery with synthetic ligament 🔶

Reconstruction of the cranial cruciate ligament is the subject of numerous continuous developments, and research has recently had a burst of interest in intra-articular reconstruction using synthetic implants in dogs.

3 experts on the topics will present their clinical experience on the use of synthetic prostheses in different surgical applications. (Cruciate ligament reconstruction, multi-ligament injuries, open surgery and arthroscopy approach):

🔹 Dr. Martin Buchan : Orthopaedic consultant specialised in knee arthroplasty and trauma at Inverclyde Royal Hospital, UK.

🔹 Dr. Philippe Buttin : Specialist Veterinary surgeon with a high interest in ligament and tendon repair, working as mobile surgeon in the French Alps

🔹 Dr. Sven Ödman : Veterinary surgeon specialised in orthopaedics, with extensive experience in the treatment of cruciate ligaments in animals, including minimally invasive repair techniques.

Looking for a drape that provides complete long-lasting asepsis?

The Dermadine Plus incise drape maintains a sterile field and is a benefit for all types of surgical procedures.

And its other benefits?

✅ Ultra thin and stretchable conforming to anatomic structures and joints
✅ No adhesive residues after detachment
✅ Allows easy surgical incision
✅ Anti glare properties provide optimal visibility
✅ Excellent resistance to tearing
✅ Breathable film guarantees complete impermeability to fluids and microorganisms and prevents condensation which could potentially reduce adhesiveness during long cases
✅ Adhesive contains iodine which is released on application to the skin
✅ The strong, broad spectrum antimicrobial acts soon after application and the continued slow release activity maintains efficacy for over 24hrs

👉🏻 A reminder that we're talking TTA this week! 👈🏻
Join an open discussion on TTA for Cranial Cruciate Deficiency looking at the role of TTA surgery in first opinion practice and its place alongside TPLO.
The session will specifically look at Orthomed’s TTA procedure MMP, which utilises a pure titanium OrthoFoam wedge.
The porous OrthoFoam wedge has been specifically developed to support bone ingrowth, not merely adherence. Backed by numerous studies, the optimisation of OrthoFoam’s biologic and mechanical properties, including pore size and implant elasticity, has been shown to support permanent viable bone ingrowth. The wedge defines the advancement, fills the bone void, and stabilises the advanced tibial tuberosity.
The talk will include a review of real cases and discussion on how to overcome any challenges performing the surgery.
This live event inviting open interactions is timed to suit surgeons in the US and UK, but if you're unable to attend overnight, registering for the event will give you access to watch it later.

Where: Online with Zoom
When: 4:00pm UK Time, Thursday 14 March 2024
Who: Veterinary surgeons with an interest in orthopaedics
Cost: Free to attend

What type of osteosynthesis implant construct would you consider for a 30kg Retriever❓

If your answer didn't include interlocking nail, alongside plate rod, orthogonal plating and ESF then our upcoming webinar might change that view.

⚕️Join us to learn more about interlocking nails for fracture repair in small animals ⚕️

Our free webinar will discuss interlocking nails (ILNs) specifically looking at the Surg’X ILN system.

Surg'X ILN is a new generation of locking nail which has been specifically developed to overcome many of the factors which have traditionally limited their usefulness in our veterinary patients.

The BIOMECHANICAL ADVANTAGES of using ILNs for the repair of long bone fractures has been recognised for over 50 years. While ILN repair is seen as standard in human orthopaedic surgery they are not currently widely used in veterinary orthopaedics.

The intramedullary positioning of the nail, aligned with the neutral anatomical axis of the bone, when interlocked with screws or bolts provides mechanical advantages in compression, flexion and torsion.

🐱 Hip Luxation in Cats 🐱

Interested in reading a published paper looking at hip luxation in cats using some of our Novalig and Novaten ligament and tendon repair implants?
In this study (linked below) a biomechanical testing protocol enabling load testing of the feline coxo-femoral joint was described. The fixation strength of two extra-articular stabilisation techniques were also tested and compared to an intact hip joint.
🔸 Ex-vivo Load Testing 🔸
In a veterinary first, 3D printed bases were custom-made for each anatomical specimen, based on CT-scan images and computer-aided design to enable ex-vivo load testing of 18 hip joints harvested from mature feline cadavers.
🔸 Extra-articular Repair🔸
An extra-articular repair technique using an UHMWPE implant at a 10 o’clock point relative to the hip joint was tested. In this procedure the implant was secured using a button passed through an iliac bone tunnel and fixed in the femur through a perpendicular tunnel using an interference screw.
An iliofemoral repair was also studied. In this case an UHMWPE suture was passed in a figure of 8 pattern and secured with a knot.

In a heartwarming tale of collaboration and innovation, Neuromed recently played a pivotal role in saving a Great Pyrenees pup named Chelsea. The exact origins of the 9 month old's back problems are unknown, but a diverse team worked for over five hours to stabilise her severely malformed lower spine and pelvis using our invetra PSF system.

Spearheaded by Suzanne Rosen, a veterinary neurosurgeon from Pennsylvania's Veterinary Referral Center, the team also included an equine surgeon, an engineer, plus tech specialist and orthopaedic spine surgeon, John Ray, who brought his expertise in pedicle screws from human medicine to assist Chelsea.

Helping to minimise infection risks and support stabilisation in Chelsea’s procedure, they also integrated a specialized bone graft infused with antibiotics.

Thanks to the innovative intervention and dedication of the collaborative team, Chelsea now faces a life free from debilitating pain, embodying the transformative impact of collective expertise and compassionate care in the realm of veterinary medicine.
