Living by the beach is an incredible lifestyle, but it comes with risks—like snakes in the bush dunes. That’s why K9 Snake Avoidance Training is essential.
In this video, you’ll see a trained dog detect a snake’s scent, stop, and instinctively choose safety - turning back, with its owners naturally following. Instead of investigating, the dog makes an independent decision to avoid danger. When encountering a snake, it calmly creates distance and moves on.
At home, whether alone or not, the dog continues making smart choices, seeking a safe place to go. This behaviour alerts owners that a snake is or was present. This crucial behavior not only keeps the dog safe but also alerts his family.
If a snake is found, calling a relocator is the next step to safely remove it.

TWO DOGS VS. DEADLY DUGITE – A CLOSE CALL!
Captured on CCTV in Mandurah in November 2024, two dogs had a near-fatal encounter with a dugite in their backyard. The young Aussie Shepherd, recently welcomed into the family, would've heard a noise, spotted movement and instinctively gave chase. This triggered the older German Shepherd to join in, escalating the danger in a heartbeat.
The dugite, acting in self-defense, struck out to create space, narrowly missing the dogs. This split-second reaction allowed the snake to move erratically as it struck again and again then move until the snake was able to escape through the pool fencing where it was headed. Had the bite landed, the outcome could have been tragic.
It was two years ago, the German Shepherd underwent K9 Snake-Awareness Training with me. With the untrained instincts of the young Aussie Shepherd, the German shepherd was thrown off by the behaviour of the young Aussie Shepherd. If the German Shepherd was alone, it would had been aware and moved away as trained to do.
Alarmed by the close call, the owners immediately contacted me to arrange training for both dogs.
By sheer luck, I was in the area the very next day, working with other clients on K9 Snake-Awareness Training with their dogs. With the incident still fresh in the dogs’ minds, it was the perfect time to intervene.
The result was the Aussie Shepherd now followed the German Shepherd’s lead, learning to stay calm and avoid snakes rather than chasing them.
This training transformed what could have been a life-ending mistake into a life-saving lesson.
That day, luck was on their side—and I was there to ensure they’d never need to rely on luck again.

Build confidence and master essential social skills for you and your dog in real-world settings with a dog behaviour certified trainer. The Pack members consists of many personalities with two new members who were reactive around dogs.
Today's walk focused on what happens around a surf club, footpath walking on a loose leash, obedience, having fun down the beach and watching surf life savers train. Great progress by everyone and lots of fun for dogs and owners.
