UPDATE: Whilst our understanding of the meeting on site indicated we were not able to serve hot coffee from the tram, further reading of written documentation from the council did state that coffee and pre-packaged food was an option. We feel our decision to build a fully equipped kitchen provides better food options in the long term. We are currently looking to find someone to operate their own business in the cafe and make tasty food creations that everyone will love.

Well it seems we really do live in a two-tier society.
For nearly 4 years, we have been telling visitors to Mansfield Zoo that our proposed Tram Cafe cannot go ahead as a servery because the Mansfield Shire Council - despite granting a permit for this purpose in order to bring the Tram up here in 2019- will not allow it.

This has applied to ALL other businesses Victoria-wide who acquired a Tram for the purposes of using it as a joint servery/seating area. Excepting Diamond Valley, who entirely gutted the inside of the tram and did a beautiful job of turning it into a modern cafe inside a Tram. Well done Diamond Valley!

So we, like other businesses, have invested in building yet another structure - at great expense - to house the cafe servery instead of using a part of the tram for this purpose. (Our cafe is still awaiting the lino flooring and pending permits being granted by Council, will then be opened for use)

Today we have Melbourne City Council proudly showing their new Tram Cafe Servery which is EXACTLY what we planned to do four years ago - with a lovely article in The Age.

What is going on ?

And it’s serving coffee at prices that feel as retro as its jaunty colour scheme.
