About Us

Mareeba Animal Refuge (MAR) is currently run and managed by Jennifer Walsh, who has many years experience in the care of animals. Jennifer is also a trained Homeopath and Natural Therapist and she has instigated many treatments in the care of the animals in this field as well. was originally established in Herberton around 2000 by our founder, Fiona Buchanan who had many years of work in

animal welfare before she was drawn to the Atherton Tablelands because of the great need here. Already elderly, she began a gift shop in Herberton and worked long hours in the shop as well as caring for several neglected and abandoned dogs in her own home. Later, a gallery coffee shop was established next door to the gift shop and these are both now thriving businesses staffed solely by volunteers with all proceeds either coming to us or assisting low income earners with desexing programmes. The original aim was to build a refuge in the Wongabel Forest on land purchased with the assistance of Cairns Animal Welfare, however after receiving too much opposition from local residents the land was sold and the idea abandoned. Shortly thereafter, Council put up the tender on the former TSPCA site in Mareeba. We applied and won, taking over on November 17, 2007. Sadly, Fiona passed away in August 2007 just before her dream was realised. The site had been allowed to become very run down and with the huge effort of a wonderful team of volunteers, it wasn't long before the Mareeba Animal Refuge opened its doors looking very neat and tidy. The refuge is going from strength to strength with collaberation between Mareeba Shire Council and all the dedicated supporters and very hard workers of Friends of the Animals. The Refuge could not function without the help of its volunteers who give up their time day after day, week after week to keep this place functioning as well as it does. The list is long but the main contributers are as follows. Faye Downie - dog trainer and assessor. Puts in long hours to walk, obedience train and temperament assess our dogs. The dog walkers - several helpers come very regularly especially Arthur who comes six days a week to help us walk our dogs, everyone of which is walked every day. Tony Clausen - Keeps our vast lawns and entry ways neat and tidy. He supplies his own mowing equipment and petrol. In the wet season this is a weekly task that takes many hours. All our paid staff also put in many extra hours to fund raise and help in many other ways. We’re thrilled to share the wonderful news from today’s Adoption Day:

- **Pebble and Eddie** have found their forever homes and are already settling in! 🏡💖
- **Teddy** has a trial adoption starting next Friday—fingers crossed for this sweet boy! 🤞
- A gorgeous little kitten was pre-adopted and will be heading to their new home soon! 🐱🎉

We’re getting ready for a fantastic Adoption Day, and we’re really hoping to see some wonderful adoptions today. Here’s a sneak peek at just a few of the amazing rescues who can’t wait to meet you!

ADOPTED ❤️**Pebble:** Our youngest pup in care—though not for long, as we’re welcoming a new litter of puppies today! Pebble is a sweet little girl who adores cuddles and being by your side. She’s great with kids and other dogs, but she’ll need a cat-free home. 🐶💕

TRIAL SCHEDULED 🤞**Teddy:** At 8 years young, Teddy is our most mature dog in care. He’s the most placid, gentle, and loving boy you’ll ever meet—just like a real-life teddy bear! Teddy is wonderful with kids and other dogs. He’s shown some interest in cats, so a trial would be needed if there are cats in the home. 🧸🐾

**Kandi:** This sweet and happy girl has been with us since she was a kitten. Today marks her SECOND adoption day, and she’s really hoping this one will be the one! Kandi gets along great with other cats and loves to play. 🐱🎉

**Nerissa:** Our longest cat in care and the ultimate sassy queen. Nerissa is a beautiful blend of cheekiness and affection, and she’s ready to rule her new kingdom. 👑😺

We’re scratching our heads as to why these two haven’t found their forever homes yet! Dalia and Miffy are everything you’d want in a furry friend—they’re playful, sweet, and full of love, yet they’re still waiting for their perfect match.

Mia is a stunning DSH female who, at 3 years old, is ready to find her forever home. This lovely girl adores a good pat but isn’t too keen on being held, making her better suited to a household without young kids. However, Mia is a wonderful companion who will happily keep you company with her affectionate nature.

Mia has previously lived with another cat, so with some time to adjust, she could befriend a new feline companion. She would also do just fine as the only cat in the home, soaking up all the love and attention for herself.

**Special Adoption Fee:**
Mia was surrendered with some of her vet work already completed, so her adoption fee is reduced to just $100. Please remember that we don’t have EFTPOS facilities—cash or bank transfer only.

**Spotlight: Koolie Pups**
We are truly shocked that our three remaining Koolie pups—Cadence, Cassie, and Cody—haven’t had any interest yet! These pups are incredible, each with a great nature and an eagerness to learn. They’ve been evolving in leaps and bounds, with their confidence growing every single day.

- **Date of Birth**: 21.04.24
- **Size**: Medium (under 20kg)
- **Compatibility**: Good with other dogs when introduced properly. Have seen chickens at a distance, test would be required. Untested with cats at this stage. Good with children but can be jumpy/mouthy, this is easily fixed with firm boundaries. Trial periods available.
- **Adoption Fees**: $350 (includes desexing, C5 vaccination, microchipping, and up-to-date flea, tick, worm, and heartworm preventatives)
