Public Notification: Spike in Tick Paralysis Cases
Dear Valued Clients,
We are currently experiencing a significant increase in cases of tick paralysis among pets in our community. Tick paralysis is a life-threatening condition caused by toxins released when the paralysis tick, attaches to pets.
Symptoms to Watch For:
• Weakness in the back legs, progressing to total paralysis
• Changes in voice or bark
• Difficulty swallowing or breathing
• Vomiting or lack of appetite
If you notice any of these symptoms, seek veterinary care immediately. Tick paralysis can worsen quickly, so early intervention is critical.
Prevention Tips:
To protect your pets:
1. Use Tick Preventatives: Ensure your pet is on a vet-recommended tick prevention treatment, such as collars, spot-on treatments, or oral medications.
2. Perform Daily Tick Checks: Run your hands over your pet’s body daily, paying special attention to the head, neck, ears, and underbelly. Do this even if your pet is on prevention.
3. Keep Grass and Bushes Trimmed: Ticks thrive in overgrown vegetation. Maintaining a tidy yard can reduce tick habitats.
4. Avoid High-Risk Areas: During tick season, minimize your pet’s exposure to bushy or grassy areas where ticks are common.
5. Know the Signs: Familiarize yourself with the symptoms of tick paralysis and act quickly if they appear.
What to Do if You Find a Tick:
1. Remove the Tick Promptly: Use tweezers or a tick-removal tool to grasp the tick close to your pet’s skin and pull it out steadily.
2. Save the Tick for Identification: Place it in a sealed container and bring it to your vet if needed.
3. Monitor Your Pet: Even after removal, the effects of the tick’s toxin may continue. Watch closely for symptoms and contact us immediately if you notice changes. The safest decision is to come in directly after removing a paralysis tick.
