I took one of my green babies to an adult riders lesson a few weeks ago - it was my second time riding her and my first outing with her .
I explained this to the instructor …I just wanted to ride around watch and try to relax …let her take it all in .
Now I am a nervous rider … especially on a new green horse ..but these days I am quite happy to say no if I am not happy to be pushed …
I felt very vulnerable letting her have her head in a very large area…the instructor told me “ that if I was going to buy young big horses ..I had to learn to be confident and ride them “ I am sure all the technical advice was correct …but the instructor was not reading the room !
I left the lesson and my mare and I watched from the sideline and made it a positive experience for her - she watched calmly and patiently .
Some of you who know me may have noticed I dont like being told what to do much anymore ! I am all up for being gently pushed when required …I think thats a great skill my regular trainer has …
And actually I don’t have to ride all my horses ! I have no delusions of grandeur ..I know I am a crap rider ..not even a confident crap rider anymore ! I am lucky enough to be in the position to buy horses I like and get great professional help to bring out their best and find them the right human/ home . I know I am not the right person to bring on every horse and I am honest about it .
Enjoying horses doesn’t have to mean competing or striving for perfection … it doesn’t even have to mean you are riding ..as long as we have the animals best interest and we are looking after their needs .
Be a grumpy old lady like me and don’t be told what you have to do 🤣
