Vale Archie💔
It's been quite the ride with this senior. We travelled a long and bumpy road together arriving at a place of acceptance and grooming quality of his choice😂.
Thanks Sue for trusting me with little Poo. I will miss him greatly.

Good to know

Epipremnum aureum, more commonly known as Devil’s Ivy or Golden Pothos, is an evergreen vine that belongs to the Araceae family. Identified by its glossy, heart-shaped leaves variegated with white and yellow streaks, this plant thrives in a wide range of environments. Epipremnum aureum is highly adaptable and is therefore commonly used as a houseplant in Australia and New Zealand.

The Animal Poisons Helpline is frequently contacted about pets chewing or ingesting the leaves and stem from this plant. The plant contains microscopic needle shaped crystal structures known as raphides. When animals chew into the plant material, the raphides are deposited into the tongue, lips, and throat. This can result in an immediate burning sensation and within minutes affected animals may start drooling and scratching at their mouth. Animals may be reluctant to eat or drink and vomiting can occur if plant material has been swallowed. In some cases, swelling of the tongue and throat can occur.

If your pet has ingested something they should not have, please phone the Animal Poisons Helpline for advice. The Animal Poisons Helpline provides free advice to pet owners in Australia and New Zealand and can be reached on 1300 869 738 (AU) or 0800 869 738 (NZ).

Is your dog chewing his paws?
This could be an easy and cost effective way to treat itchy paws.

Itchy Paws? Try This Simple Home Remedy! 👌

An all-natural foot rinse or soak using water and povidone iodine (found at your local drug store) once a day can dramatically reduce your pet’s intense itch by removing the allergens causing them. 🐾👍

Today’s free pet blog post is all about yeast infection in dogs. Read it now on our new website linked in the comments.

🚨🚨**ALERT**🚨🚨

We have just been notified today that there is a large number of washed up bluebottles at Redhead Beach in Newcastle.

Dogs that ingest bluebottles may be stung in the mouth and throat. These stings are immediately painful and affected dogs may drool or vomit. Stings may result in local swelling in the mouth and throat and rarely this may lead to breathing difficulties. Allergic reactions including anaphylaxis are possible.

Please be cautious if heading down to Redhead Beach with your dog over the next couple of days. Keeping your dog leashed is a good idea and this can also be a useful strategy to prevent your dog eating beached pufferfish and other jellyfish. Help us prevent pet poisonings by sharing this post with any dog owning friends or family that may be in the Newcastle area.

☎ If you are concerned your pet has ingested something they should not have, please phone the Animal Poisons Helpline on 1300 869 738 (AU) or 0800 869 738 (NZ) for advice. Don't forget to follow the Animal Poisons Helpline to receive live pet poisons alerts.

⚠️Rawhide Warning: It’s that time of year when the shops are full of rawhide packaged as Christmas gifts for dogs. Please don’t be tempted! Rawhide is dangerous for dogs because it’s highly processed, full of dangerous chemicals ☠️, and is a terrible choking hazard.

👍There are much safer chewing options for dogs: dried tendons (cow, chicken, kangaroo), dried ears (pig, cow, sheep, rabbit) and stuffed toys such as Kong Classic.

🇦🇺Look for items made in Australia or New Zealand because we have better pet food hygiene and safety standards than the rest of the world.
Cheers to Newcastle dog training for the original post.

Dispelling some myths

Here’s a corrected infographic to help fix the popular but incorrect meme that has been circulating on social media this last month.
Please DON’T post “But I’ve heard X food is toxic” in the comments, rather, post the research studies (not links to outdated dog websites or blogs that haven’t bothered to clarify their poorly written material) about foods that have been declared “toxic” if consumed by pets with no science to back up the claim.
When you spend time searching the literature for toxicology studies on the feeding of fresh fruits and veggies to pets you come up shockingly empty-handed. AAFCO/FEDIAF state we should not feed these foods to pets: onions, grapes/raisins, macadamia nuts and chocolate. Those studies exist, but that’s it. 4 foods.
Compare that to never ending TOXIC/DON’T FEED lists found all over social media and it’s so confusing; even worse, people share these posts without doing any research.
There’s a big difference between feeding a giant pit in a fruit (or a wad of bark or leaves) and feeding normal amounts the actual edible fruit or veggie; same goes for your two-legged kids. Toddlers and pets need to have the rinds, cores, seeds, leaves, stems and pits of fruits removed prior to eating, and all fruits and veggies need to be chopped into tiny, bite-sized pieces. Common sense, right?
I believe pet parents also have some common sense and won’t offer rinds, pits or cores to their pets as treats; AKC and ASPCA, please update or clarify your out-of-date website info 🙏🏼.
Suggestion for pet websites discussing feeding real foods: put a * by foods that have a rind, pit, core or stem. Remind folks training treats should less than 10% of an animal’s daily calories, and if your pet has never had the new food before, always feed them slowly, giving the GI tract time to adjust. Chop them into tiny pieces and offer in moderation.
It’s time to declare common sense for the win; pet parents aren’t idiots, so it’s time we stop perpetuating fear-based myths and denying animals the fresh food treats they deserve. 🫐🍎🍒🍑🥭🥑🥝🥦🥬🥕🍌🥚🥒🍆🥥🍉🐾
