Fraser Coast Designer Shih tzu's

This is our Phoebe and her brother Khobi (from breeder Kerry Baumann in Brisbane). They are both black shih tzu's going through a shedding phase. I posted this so i could share the stunning red that many black shih tzu's carry. In a month or two the black will be more dominant. Its amazing how vibrant the red is. Usually it make the black look quite chocolate but now you can see definite red and black.

Small giggle. We went from a queen to king size bed since Laurie said Ebony was a bed hog. The 3 of us used to lay side by side. Once we got the king size bed, Ebony couldn't reach both of us at the same time so she laid sideways. Now Eb has more bed and we are still sleeping on the edges. Not sure who won out of this upgrade??

Therapy dogs ...
A little story...
So a beautiful elderly couple came and bought two of Willow's girl pups back in 2022. It was wonderful to get to know these lovely people as they visited each week to watch their girls reach milestones until they could finally take their babies home to complete their family.

In recent month, Paul was diagnosed with some serious health problems. After a stint in hospital, all he wanted to do was come home and lay under the mango tree with his girls. Sadly, Paul passed away late Wednesday. After speaking to Clarise his wife, she said in his final week, she would lift his arm to stroke his precious girls and watch him give 1/2 a smile. The night he fell asleep in death, Clarise found him with both Millie and Bronte on either side trying to keep him warm. The girls stayed there with Paul sometime after, not leaving his side.

This real life experience while sad, shows the extent puppy therapy can have on a person as well as how much love our furbabies give us... to the end. Don't you agree?

Does having blue eyes in a shih-tzu puppy mean a health problem? The short answer is…. it does not.
All Shih tzu's are born with blue eyes and within a few short weeks, most have changed to a dark colour – either dark brown or black. On a very rare occasion, a puppy will keep its blue eyes because of a Merle gene causing less melanin in the eye(s). This is the chemical that causes the change in the eye colour during puppy's first few weeks. The result of this is purely genetics and the puppy will have what we see as 1 or 2 brilliantly beautiful blue eyes. Are the eyes actually blue? No. When light enters eyes without pigment, particles in the stroma layer of the cornea reflect blue wavelengths. This is similar to why a clear sky appears blue.
Approximately 35 other dog breeds have blue eyes including Australian shepherd, border collie's, Siberian husky, dachshunds, welsh corgi's just to name a few. For shih tzu's though, this is quite rare. Out of interest, these breeds are no more susceptible to eye problems than a breed that has a set eye colour.
When is blue eyes a signal of an underlying problem? When a dogs eyes change from brown to a cloudy grey/blue however these don't look the same as the genetic blue eyes. Conditions that can cause color changes in eyes include cataracts, glaucoma, corneal dystrophy, anterior uveitis, nuclear sclerosis, and interstitial keratitis. These often occur later in life as adult and senior dogs due to age, injury, or disease. If this occurs, a responsible owner will seek medical attention immediately to keep further damage occurring.

Shih tzu colours.
Often we meet many people who have a specific colour preference when buying a puppy. Its interesting that shih tzu's actually have many colour to choose from. Commonly you will see tri colour (red, white and black) and black and white. Significantly less common is solid colours such as black, white, lavender, blue, silver and gold.
Things to remember.... lighter colours show up dirt and staining, tri colours are much lighter when clipped. Certain colours (exception back and white combo) fade with age.
Solid Black is an intriguing colour in shih tzu's. While in many other breeds, it is common but no so for the shih tzu. Why? Shih tzu's carry a dominant coloured pattern gene in their familial line making it least likely the litter will come out with solid colours. While a solid black shih tzu is not unheard of, it is arguably the most rare colour of the breed. Generally, a black shih tzu carries the red colouring with the black making the black look chocolate. Due to the dominant colour pattern gene, they will also have a small amount of white (usually on the chest or a few toes).
