The ducklings first swim in the big pond! Just a few minutes but they had a wonderful time. Much better than the bathroom sink.

Our first little foray in the grass today for an hour or two! The ducklings are 2 weeks old today.

I have 6 packets of fertile J*p Quail eggs available. Eggs are from all of my pens, so there is the chance for Blue, Double Blue, Oz snowy, Oz sandy, Calico, Tibetan Tux, Rosetta Tux, and a very small chance of Pharoah and English White. All eggs are less than a week old! Any that don't s3ll in the next few days will go in the incubator!

Could these guys get any cuter?! They're so gorgeous.

We have more ducklings! They started hatching this morning and have already finished. We've ended up with 9 out of 13 eggs.

Some interesting data;
1 egg had a crack and ceased development around day 14, 1 duckling internally pipped on a vein and didn't make it, 1 pipped, zipped and then separated from the egg too early and passed, and the last duckling was fully formed but passed before internally pipping. This means we had a 100% fertility rate, with a 76.92% hatch rate and a 69.23% survival rate (so far). Which to me is pretty great for call ducks!

And now, some cuteness!

I always provide sand baths for my quail, from 2 weeks of age onward. You can see they absolutely love it! These are my 3 primary breeding groups at the moment. My only issue is the Oz group are only giving me 3 eggs a day at the moment, everyone else is powering out!

I finally got around to doing a headcount at egg collection today! We all know chicken maths. Well, quail math is much the same! I've got 4 breeding boys to 16 breeding girls as well as 1 spare boy and 2 pet girls. Not to mention the 19 babies who are rapidly growing.

11 eggs out of 16 hens isn't too shabby for the beginning of the season.

My 7 Favourite babies out of the 19 that I have right now! With the exception of the one I had to put in the grass for pics, these babies are exceptionally chill! I'm loving watching them grow into their colours.

We have our first Call Duck babies of the season!

We had 10 out of 17 make it to lock-down. 6 hatched and lived, one pipped and passed and 3 unfortunately passed without pipping. Due to issues we found when we opened up the passed eggs, these 6 babies will all either be retained by us, go to pet homes only, or to a breeder who Is willing to work with a potential genetic issue.

Our next batch from the same parents is due in around 2 weeks so we will see if this issue is present with them too.

Anyway, welcome to the KP family little ducklings!

Pic is the double blue. He comes from a wonderful breeder in Brisbane, but he's excess to my needs now.

20 new J*p Quail hatched out on the 14th. They're a mixed lot from all my various pens so there are quite a few different colours. I'm excited to see what they look like when they're grown up.

The Journey of Bean.
Our pair of Green English Budgies gave us a wonderful little baby, the day we farewelled Arwyn. We've kept this to ourselves until we were fairly sure he was gonna make it.

So Welcome Bean! He is 12 days old today and on 3 hourly feeds between 5:00am and 10:00pm. Here's some pictures of our journey so far.

A sad day today. We helped miss Arwyn Cross the 🌈 🌉 today.

She had a nasty puncture to her eye 2 weeks ago, and even with medications and painkillers she was suffering. Her vet check this morning revealed that her eye had ruptured and she was not a suitable candidate for surgery given her age.

Rest Peacefully Arywn. We will miss you :(

Feat. Heath Rider and our drake Penguin.

Now, our calls are always friendly but not usually chase us around the yard friendly 😅 I do believe the hormones are starting to flow in our Australian Calls. Little note: Penguin isn't being aggressive at this point. He's just following us, usually looking for treats

These are the best thing ever! We installed one puck per compartment in the breeding cages today. They're so BRIGHT, and combined with a timer from 6am to 7pm, the quail should get a consistent 13 hours of 'Daylight'. Being under the house with limited natural lighting, I have to have artificial lighting for them. We have tried a number of different options over the years but I think these are going to be out best option yet.
