💉 Pet Diabetes awareness Month (November) 💉

When it comes to the signs of diabetes in pets, here are some things to look out for:

💧 Excessive thirst and frequent urination. (Notice how often you refill water bowls).

🧹Weight loss. (Your pet might be eating but dropping the kg's due to their body’s inability to absorb nutrients).

👀 Cloudy eyes. (This is especially the case in dogs).

🥴 Chronic or recurring infections. (This includes skin infections and urinary infections).

As with many health conditions, early detection diabetes in dogs and cats is key since this means swift treatment that can help your pet have the best quality of life.

🍪 Pet obesity is a major health issue today, with those extra kilos raising the risk of diabetes and other health problems in both dogs and cats.

🐾 For instance, obese cats are four times more likely to develop diabetes. And beyond diabetes, pet obesity often leads to other health concerns, emphasising the need to keep our pets at a healthy weight.

🗣 Rising rates: Over 40% of dogs and 30% of cats in Australia are now overweight or obese, showing a clear trend in pet weight gain.

🐕 Breed-specific risks: Some breeds, like Labrador Retrievers, are more prone to weight gain, so owners need to take extra care with diet and exercise.

👶🏼 Health-first mindset: Though a chubby pet may look adorable, carrying extra weight poses serious risks to their health.

😴 Obesity can lead to joint issues, low energy, respiratory problems, heart issues, high blood pressure, and reduced quality of life, with diabetes being a common consequence.

📈 Regular six-month glucose curves are essential for managing diabetes in pets. By tracking blood sugar levels throughout the day, veterinarians can fine-tune insulin doses to keep glucose stable and prevent complications like cataracts, kidney issues, and nerve damage. These check-ups help catch any changes due to age, stress, or diet, supporting a healthier, more comfortable life for diabetic pets.

🎺🎺 PARVOVIRUS OUTBREAK IN SE QLD 🗣🗣

Have you heard about the recent outbreak of Parvovirus cases in SE Qld?

Parvovirus is a serious and contagious virus 🦠 that can be deadly for dogs, especially in South East Queensland, where the warm climate ☀ helps it spread. It mostly affects puppies and unvaccinated dogs, causing symptoms like vomiting 🤢, bloody diarrhea 💩, and weakness 😓. The virus attacks the intestines, leading to severe dehydration.

Vaccination is the best way to protect dogs, as parvo can survive in the environment for months and is hard to kill with standard cleaners. Pet owners in SE Qld should keep their dogs vaccinated, especially during warmer months when cases often increase.

Please stay up to date with vaccinations, prevention is SO much better than the cure. Call 0755 02 36 86 to book.

🎃👻 Spooky Season is Here! 👻🎃

As the ghosts and goblins come out to play, don’t let your furry friends get spooked! 👀 Here are some Pet Safety Tips for a paw-some Halloween:

🐾 Keep Treats Out of Reach – Candy is a treat for us, not for pets! Chocolate and artificial sweeteners can be harmful to your fur babies.

🦴 Costumes? Comfort First! – If your pet loves dressing up, make sure their costume is comfy and safe—no tight fits or small parts they could swallow.

🎇 Watch Those Decorations – Pumpkins, candles, and spooky decor are fun, but curious paws can get into trouble. Keep them out of reach!

🐕‍🦺 Trick-or-Treat Caution – Doorbells and strangers can stress out pets. Consider a cozy, quiet space for them while you enjoy the festivities.

🎃👻 Wishing all our furry friends and their humans a safe and fun Halloween! Tag us in your pet costume photos for a chance to be featured! 🐾🧡

Did you know?

🐍 October is prime time for snake activity in many parts of Australia. Here’s how to keep your pets safe while enjoying the outdoors this spring. 🐍

1. Keep Yards Tidy:

🍂Clear Debris: Remove long grass, piles of wood, and garden waste where snakes may hide.
🍖Store Pet Food Properly: Leftover pet food can attract rodents, which in turn attract snakes.

2. Supervise Outdoor Time:

🗣Stay Vigilant: Always supervise pets when they’re in areas where snakes are known to be active, especially in rural or bushland areas.
🐕Walk During Cooler Times: Snakes are more likely to bask in the sun during midday, so walk pets in the early morning or late afternoon.

3. Leash Your Pet:

📿When walking in areas with potential snake activity, keep your dog on a leash and stay on clear, well-trodden paths to reduce the risk of encountering a snake.

🐍Know the Signs of Snake Bite in Pets:

🐾Weakness or collapse
🐾Trembling or shaking
🐾Vomiting
🐾Excessive drooling
🐾Dilated pupils
🐾Difficulty breathing
🐾Paralysis

Symptoms can appear quickly or take hours to develop, but any suspicion of a snake bite should be treated as an emergency. Please call us on 0755 023 686 for advice or head straight to Emergency (we recommend AES Carrara for weekends and after hours or AEC Varsity Lakes during normal business hours) The emergency clinics stock Antivenom & snake detection kits.

Just another day in the office :P

Miss Ellie was a VERY GOOD GIRL for her ultrasound with Dr Catheryn (a specialist radiologist). We perform Ultrasounds to gain a clearer, non-invasive view of an animal's internal organs and structures. Here are some common reasons why they use this diagnostic tool:

- Diagnosing Abdominal Issues: Ultrasounds help examine organs like the liver, kidneys, bladder, spleen, and intestines. They can detect abnormalities such as tumours, cysts, stones, or blockages.

- Heart Evaluations: In cases of suspected heart disease, an ultrasound (echocardiogram) can assess the structure and function of the heart.

- Guided Biopsies: Ultrasounds help guide the veterinarian when taking tissue samples (biopsies) from organs without invasive surgery.

- Fluid Detection: They can detect fluid buildup in the abdomen or chest, which may indicate conditions like infections, trauma, or heart failure.

Ultrasounds are a key diagnostic tool because they offer real-time imaging without the need for surgery or more invasive methods.

If you are worried about your pet, call us to make a booking for a consultation with our vets 0755 023 686.

👴🏻👵🏻 SENIOR PETS Spotlight 👴🏻👵🏻

Did you know that approximately 41% of dogs aged over 14 years have "Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome"?

🐕 What does Cognitive Dysfunction look like? 🐕

⚠️ Decreased mental alertness
⚠️ Changes in interactions with owners
⚠️ Disorientaiton
⚠️ Decreased activity
⚠️ Increased Anxiety
⚠️ Irritability
⚠️ Depression
⚠️ House soiling

Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS) is a long-term and worsening condition in dogs that causes various changes in their brains. Over time, the brain shrinks, and the number of cells decreases, while the spaces inside the brain get larger. The brain's protective layers become thicker, and parts of the brain tissue break down. Like humans with Alzheimer's, dogs with CDS build up B-amyloid plaques in their brains, particularly in areas involved in memory and learning, which disrupts nerve communication.

There are also changes in brain chemicals, such as serotonin, dopamine, acetylcholine, and norepinephrine, which affect mood, memory, and alertness. Similar to human Alzheimer’s patients, lower levels of S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) have been found in dogs with CDS, which might be important for their treatment. Dogs with CDS experience a decline in memory, learning, perception, and awareness. Owners usually notice changes in their dog’s activity, sleep, appetite, and social behavior, which can develop gradually or suddenly.

There ARE things we can do to help, from specialised Brain Care diets to supplementations and medications. Call us on 0755 023 686 if your "Senior Sally" needs some support 💕

Protect Your Pets from Paralysis Ticks

- Tick Prevention: Use preventatives like Bravecto (chews last 3 months; spot-on lasts 6 months), Nexgard Spectra (monthly), or Bravecto Quantum (12-month injection). Consistency is key.

- Daily Tick Checks: Check your pet’s fur after outdoor activities, focusing on the head, neck, chest, and between the toes.

- Know the Symptoms: Watch for signs like weakness, wobbliness, vomiting, changes in bark/meow, and difficulty breathing. Contact us (5502 3686) or Animal Emergency Services Carrara (5559 1599) immediately if symptoms appear.

- Grooming: Keep your pet’s coat groomed to spot ticks more easily. Regular trims can help, especially for pets with longer fur.

- Yard Maintenance: Keep your yard tidy by mowing grass, trimming shrubs, and removing leaf litter to reduce tick habitats.

Remove the tick promptly using a tick remover tool or fine-tipped tweezers, gripping as close to your pet's skin as possible. Don’t worry if some mouth parts are left behind.

Be aware that signs of tick paralysis, like wobbliness in the back legs, may take 12-24 hours or even a few days to appear. If you notice any symptoms, seek veterinary advice immediately.

Stay vigilant and use these preventative measures to keep your pets safe. For questions or advice, call us at 5502 3686. We're open Mon-Fri 8am-5:30pm (Thursdays 8-7) and Saturdays 8-12.
