You call your dog and they actually respond on the first call- hooray!🏆
Now what?
As soon as my dog turns their head to me- I praise! The first step to a good recall is acknowledging the moment they notice you said something!

If they’re hesitant to start moving toward you then start trotting backwards while praising to draw them in.

Once they get to you- REWARD! What this looks like will be different depending on what your dog likes. But make sure they know coming back is not a burden!

Do you need to do this everytime forever? Of course not!
But the last thing you want is your dog avoiding you off-lead because when you call them the only thing you do is give them a command, put them on lead and take them home… BORING!!

No one has ‘spare time.’
If you feel like you don’t have time it’s usually because…
A- You’re following a program that requires more time that real life actually allows.
B- You’re not prioritising training your dog.

Don’t get me wrong, I am ABSOLUTELY not here to judge… lord knows I don’t do as much as I should.
BUT because my program is designed to fit in with my real life it makes prioritising it easier.

I can practice my dog staying on their bed for 30 minutes while I listen to my kids reader.
I can practice loose lead walking in 10 minute intervals while I’m doing the gardening.
I can practice boundary setting while I cook dinner.
I can practice recall while we’re at the playground.

Yes, the initial learning stage of all these things takes some more dedicated time, introducing new distraction levels takes a bit more focused time… but once we have the foundation I can fit training around my life EASILY!

Plus it helps when it’s all online so you learn in your PJ’s with a wine in your hand (skip 15 mins of Netflix and watch me instead) and send me questions at 2am when you can’t sleep😂

All of this because I love my dog and want to have a great life WITH them. I don’t want to lock them away or leave them home cause they’re a pain the a$$ to have around!
Getting a dog is a commitment and training is a part of the package you can’t avoid without it coming back to bite you (literally😜).

Pretty much every dog training method will work to teach your dog some new skills. The problem is that most of them fall apart when it comes to actually using those skills in real life.
A basic example of this is that most dogs have some understanding of what ‘sit’ means. They likely sit for their dinner and they’ll sit when there’s nothing better to do … but then if you ask them to sit while a dog walks past or you’ve got a visitor over they act like they’ve never heard it before.

Imagine a skill like coming back when you call them. Imagine all the possible distractions that you could encounter when using that skill. Now in your head rank those distractions from level 1 to level 100 for your dog. When we teach our dogs a skill we want to start by practising in distraction levels 1 to 10 but when that’s easy then we want to keep progressing and going up the levels of distractions so that we can really make that skill life proof.

A dog who doesn’t listen is HARD to live with!
👉They jump all over everyone.
👉They pull on the lead.
👉They run amok in the house, stealing food and harassing the kids.
👉90% of the time they don’t come back when you call them.
👉They JUST DON’T LISTEN when it really counts!

…. And so they end up being excluded.
They end up going on less walks and spending more and more time locked away because they’re just so hard to have around!😫(Which, of course, makes you feel super guilty and frustrated!)
