What do I need to do if there is a sheep grazier’s weather warning??

With Winter in full swing and many people struggling with feed levels this season, it is important for stock owners to heed these warnings.

Sheep grazier alerts are often discussed on the radio, TV weather reports and BOM alerts are issued through weather apps on our phones. But what does it mean?

A grazier’s alert is issued when a cold front is due, followed by cold air. So think cold, wet, windy weather followed by very cold weather(wind, cold air, frosts). Sheep get wet and cold and then have to try and maintain warmth through the cold period. It’s kind of like when a person gets out of cold water and is standing wet in the wind, you’re cold and then suddenly it is 10 times worse 🥶. Recently shorn, pregnant, lean and young animals are most at risk, but all animals can be affected and can potentially die.

So what should you do?

If you own sheep or goats and an alert has been issued for your region, you need to, at minimum, move animals to paddocks with shelter from the prevailing winds. Paddocks with trees or shelter belts and long grass are best. Ideally, move stock to somewhere with shedding or rain shelters. In severe or prolonged conditions use of barns, field shelters and shearing sheds is advised. It is also important to ensure there is adequate feed available (hay or grain) to keep them eating, especially if being shedded.

Having an action plan in place increases the welfare of your stock and reduces unnecessary stock losses.

Rescuing Mucca….

It’s never a dull day at Meadows Veterinary Centre!
Mucca got herself caught upside down in a steep paddock and despite her owners valiant efforts, they couldn’t budge her.

Meadows Vet to the rescue. Dr Zoë, Nurse Caz and Nurse Liv arrived!

After rolling and repositioning Mucca, she received some pain relief, lots of IV fluids, had some physiotherapy and then got a one way ticket on the Daisy Lifter back up the hill to the rest of her herd. We left her chewing happily on a pile of hay!

*** What to do if you hit an animal when driving***

Accidents happen. Wildlife on the roads is a hazard of country living. Recently we have seen an increase in animals being hit as they are grazing the new grass on road verges and in roadside paddocks.

It is important you keep yourself safe when accidents happen, but it is also your responsibility to check the welfare of the animal you have hit.

If you hit an animal:

1) Stop where it is safe to do so. Be aware of your surroundings, use your hazard lights and make sure you can be seen by traffic.

2) Assess the situation before approaching the animal. Injured animals are extremely stressed and fearful. If it is safe to do so, use a large towel or blanket to move the animal off the road.

3) Call for help.
Fauna Rescue Hotline 8289 0896
Koala Rescue 1300 562 529
SOWFI 7120 6610
SKER 0435 056 252
Adelaide Hills Kangaroo Rescue 0415 115 836
Police 131 444

If you are able to safely handle the animal you can transport it to the nearest vet (most won’t charge to see wildlife).

4) Keep the animal safe and calm. Do not offer food or water. Cover with a towel or blanket if you have one. Minimal touching is best as this will stress the animal.

5) If the animal is deceased, you should move it to the road verge and CHECK THE POUCH for young. If there is a joey, gently remove it and place inside a soft blanket/towel/jumper to keep them warm and take to the nearest vet for injury assessment and ongoing care. Never offer water or milk. Joey’s need very specialist care by licensed wildlife carers. Any delay in seeking help can result in the death of the joey.

If the joey is attached to the mother’s teat, do not remove it, call for assistance from a wildlife group.

Safe Driving!

How cute are these three in their PJ’s 🐾❤️

Valentino, Aston & Bentley were dropped off early this morning with Nurse Steph, to be admitted for their dental treatments with Dr Erin.

Dental disease is one of the most common medical conditions seen by veterinarians. Over 80% of dogs over the age of three have active dental disease. Dogs can be suffering from severe dental pain without any obvious signs as their drive to eat and survive surpasses their severe pain.

Meadows Veterinary Centre is a full service practice and can help you and your pets with dental check ups, dental treatments, dental x-rays and ongoing preventative care plans.

If you have concerns about your dogs teeth, or are just wanting a dental check up, call us for an appointment or book online .

We will dearly miss Max’s visits at MVC. Our love and deepest condolences to Susan and Peter.

We will all be hugging his son Arlo that bit tighter when he next visits.

A special thank you to Dr Zoe, & nurse Chelsea who attended today, to assist our magnificent Australian Grand Champion Maximus Black Thunder CCD cross the rainbow 🌈
Dr Zoe, was amazing, empathetic, & caring, even ensuring Max wasn't scrunched up, in his special, custom made coffin, once he was lowered into his forever place next to the dam.
A special hug for distressed owner Susan, was appreciated.
Thank you for ensuring a special moment, was in fact that ###

Meet Spike, the bearded dragon ❤️🦎

Spike came to MVC this week for her annual health check with Dr Jess. Our reptile friends often don’t show us that they are unwell until they’re critically ill, so these check ups are extremely important to ensure they are feeling their best, especially as we head into winter.

Annual health checks are also a great opportunity to ask any questions you might have about how to care for your reptile. We know it can be really hard to sort through the large amounts of information out there.

Dr Jess gave Spike a perfect bill of health and looks forward to seeing her again next year!

** CARING FOR ORPHAN LIVESTOCK**

With Autumn calving, lambing and kidding well underway, it’s also the time that we start seeing orphan babies.

Deciding to take on an orphan, particularly one that is under 24hours can be extremely challenging and requires significant commitment, just like caring for any newborn baby. For these tiny babies, minutes are like hours and they can deteriorate and die very quickly.

A few key tips for caring for orphaned neonates:

- They must have colostrum only for the first 24 hours. This can be milked from their mother (even if deceased), milked from another animal with a newborn or made up from powdered colostrum (for example Impact)
- Babies need to be fed every 2-3 hours, including overnight.
- The first 24hours is critical. If the baby is showing dehydration, diarrhoea/scouring, straining to toilet, weakness or lack of appetite you need to contact a veterinarian.
- Babies need to be kept in a clean, warm, dry environment.
- Once baby has survived the first 24 hours you can transition to the correct powdered milk replacer for their species. Do NOT feed powdered cows milk or bottled milk from supermarkets.
- Hygiene is extremely important, keep bottles and feeding equipment clean.
- Only feed from bottles with flow control. Never force feed or syringe feed. Do not attempt tube feeding unless you have been properly instructed on how to do so.
- Make sure you can provide an appropriate long term home for the animal.
- Make sure you address dehorning, castration, vaccination and drenching at the appropriate times (Usually required in the first week of life)

We are here to help if you need us. We will also take on unwanted orphans.

Huge Congratulations to Jodie & Chris Michelmore (Jodie Michelmore) whose homebred Irish Wolfhound Puppies placed at Crufts 2024.

Harper & Finch were born at Meadows Veterinary Centre by emergency caesarean in a huge litter of 14. We also helped prepare the puppies for relocation to their new home in the UK. We love hearing happy stories about animals that have been in our care.

As Jodie said, it takes a village. We feel extremely lucky to be a part (although small) of this happy ending.

Who doesn’t love puppy visits!

This handsome little dude is Kevin, he is a Miniature Bull Terrier. Bull Terriers make fantastic pets for active families who also want lots of doggy snugs.

Bull terriers are often misunderstood due to their strong triangular face and stocky build. They are loving, good with people and dogs and make wonderful companions.
