I am very excited to announce we are now offering SHOCKWAVE therapy for dogs and cats.

Shockwave is an FDA approved, evidence based treatment for musculoskeletal pain in both the equine and human world but has until recently been limited in the canine world as the devices then were too painful to be done awake.

We are happy to announce that a new shockwave probe has been produced that is NON PAINFUL and can be used without anaesthesia.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Shockwave utilises high intensity SOUND energy (similar to ultrasound) to stimulate a healing response from tissues.

The sound waves pe*****te the soft tissue and β€œbounce” off collagen heavy tissues including ligaments/tendon and bone to cause a physical deformation of cells.

This causes them to release healing factors to reduce inflammation, increase blood flow, accelerate wound healing and regulate bone growth - all of which contribute to reducing pain.

FAQ

How is shockwave different to laser?

Laser is light energy and shockwave is sound energy. It has similar effects however shockwave is more targeted in where it acts, needs to be used much less frequently and lasts much longer.

Is it really painful/stressful?

If the area can be firmly tapped without pain then usually a distraction with food is enough. If they are sensitive to loud sounds sometimes calming tablets can be given beforehand.

How many treatments are needed?

Usually 1-3 treatments spaced 2-3 weeks apart

How long does it last?

6-12 months is common but sometimes longer

Is it covered by insurance?

Yes by some of them! Get in touch to find out if your insurance will cover and how to ensure it will.

Do you know what conditions might benefit from pain management and rehabilitation?

Sometimes standard pain management protocols just are not enough for some conditions that are quite complex:

🐢 Chronic wind up pain (centrally sensitised)
🐢 Ligament and Tendon pain (often doesn’t respond to NSAIDS)
🐢 Cancer pain
🐢 Medication sensitivity (Gut issues or Kidney/Liver disease)

Musculoskeletal tissues also grow and change in respond to FORCES and how the tissue is used. Rehab can be important to direct appropriate growth for example for:

🐢 Post orthopaedic surgery
🐢 Management of hip/elbow dysplasia
🐢 Management of arthritis (and possible med reduction)
🐢 Management of amputees

Neurological conditions can be treated with rehab to reinforce certain nerve pathways and increase sensory receptors in the joints, ligaments and tendons. Rehab can successfully manage certain conditions including:

🐢 Type 1 IVDD (Lower than grade 4)
🐢 Type 2 IVDD
🐢 ANNPE (acute disk extrusion)
🐢 FCE (spinal stroke)

It can also slow down progression (but not fix) some neurological conditions like

🐢 Lumbosacral disease
🐢 Degenerative Myelopathy

Check out this amazing progress by Harper and her dedicated owner!

Harper came to me after she had recovered from spinal surgery (grade 4 - complete paralysis) but had not completely regained normal mobility and seemed to be in pain.

On exam Harper was a bit unsteady but her main issue actually seemed to have been that she developed compensation and tightness in her spinal muscles! You can see how arched her spine is in the before photo. She waggles her bottom to balance herself and her muscles had been paying for it.

She has already been on an amazing hydro and laser program by .conditioning so no work was required there. We made the following changes:

🐢 Started on CBD oil which helped with muscle relaxation and pain
🐢 Showed her owner how to do massage at home and where
🐢 Started some stretching exercises
🐢 Started hind limb strengthening exercises
🐢 Started balance exercises

Now Harper is much more steady and much more comfortable. Harper and her owner now enjoy longer walks together and Harper continues her therapies to maintain her comfort levels and strength πŸ’•πŸ’ͺ🏻

Would you be able to tell if your dog was having a pain flare up and is a plan in place for what to do if it happens?

It is normal for many mobility conditions to have an occasional bad day that might need some extra pain management. Humans can normally safely take a Panadol or neurofen on a bad pain day but sometimes it’s not so clear in dogs.

Scroll through to learn more about some symptoms and tips about pain flare ups and what you can do about them

Make sure you’ve talked to your vet about what your dog can have in event of a flare up! And whenever in doubt, call your local vet or emergency clinic and a vet nurse should be able to triage and decide if you need to come in or not.

Thank you so much for the kind review! I’ve been seeing Ruth for chronic pain after she had undergone multiple orthopaedic surgeries.

She had also developed hyperaesthesia syndrome which we needed to control with specific medications.

It was hard to know exactly what was working for Ruth so we used a combination of pain scoring and video gait analysis to determine the best treatment plan for her.

Mum is also working hard on her exercises to keep her strong. I’m so glad Ruth is back to running and playing again!

Let’s learn more about muscle wastage! Paying attention to muscle mass in your dog can be an early indication of an underlying condition.

Most often it is due to a musculoskeletal or neurological issue but occasionally it can be related to an energy use disorder that often needs further investigation like blood tests or imaging especially if they are on the older end of the age spectrum.

Speak to your vet today if you are noticing a loss of muscle in your pet to see if there might be an underlying reason why!

Everyone knows that Daschunds are prone to back problems (1 in 4 will have a spinal issue within their lifetime) BUT did you know there are lifestyle changes you can make to reduce your risk of back injury?

Understanding the physics of why Daschunds are over represented can help to understand what we can do to counter this as much as possible.

Unfortunately there is also a genetic component to chondrodysplasic breeds (breeds with altered body shape) so this factor is difficult to control.

But there are some factors within our control are weight levels, body conditioning and types of activity that are restricted!

Get in touch today for a tailored exercise program to strengthen your Daschund’s body πŸ’ͺ🏻πŸ’ͺ🏻πŸ’ͺ🏻

Sometimes simple home changes can make all the difference to our pets quality of life.

The confidence to walk on slippery floors again, soft bedding for sore joints and more - can mean a lot to our older pet’s comfort.

Let’s not forget that environment and home design also plays a role in relieving pain!
