Meet Gizmo 🐶🥰

6 month old Brussels Griffon.

Helping his human siblings to understand all about respecting his space bubble. And teaching them how to read and understand him better so they can build a beautiful relationship with him.

He doesn't enjoy being pickup up by the kids or patted on the head or kissed on the face.
All very normal things most dogs don't enjoy as human and dogs communicate love and affections very differently. But the more we do this to a dog who is unhappy, eventually they will snap.

He might look like a stuffed toy but he isn't one.

Education is so important. Dogs are living beings with feelings and emotions too and it's important that we respect this and teach this to children.

Supervising kids and dogs 24/7 is stressful and tiring for us as parents and for the dogs.

Management is essential to give parents and our dogs a break from the chaos and to help our kids and dogs feel safe.

I want your dog to be able to eat, rest and sleep in peace without always having one eye open wondering when the child is going to approach them or invade their space.

And some goes with your kids. I want them to know they have a safe place they can go to eat, play and rest uninterrupted by the dog.

For example, using baby-gates, a playpen, crate, closing doors, etc.

Create your kids and dog a “safe zone” if you don’t have one already and start getting your dog used to it slowly and gradually in a positive way.

Separation can be challenging for a many dogs as they are social beings and just want to be with us. The best way to make separation/ management a positive is to start slowly and gradually and to include food enrichment – like a kong, lickimat or a chew toy to help your dog settle into it. It should not be seen as punishment or a negative – rather it is a way to let everyone chill and have a break. Make it a place your dog wants to go and chooses to go to.

Teach children that your dog’s “safe zone” and bed are always out of bound for kids. Never disturb a resting/sleeping dog or a dog who is eating or chewing. Rather teach young children to wave or blow a kiss instead.

Please get in touch if you need any help with this at home.

SNAKE SEASON 🐍

With the warmer weather here, it's important to be aware of the increased presence of snakes.

Snakes are drawn to areas with food, water, and quiet hiding spots.

It's also crucial to be vigilant about potential snake bites in your pets. If you suspect a snake bite, act swiftly.

Some signs of a snake bite in pets can include:
• Sudden weakness followed by collapse.
• Shaking or twitching of the muscles.
• Vomiting.
• Dilated pupils not responsive to light.
• Blood in the urine.
• Paralysis including paralysis of the respiratory muscles.

Please note that Animal Aid Vet Clinic does not currently stock anti-venom.

POOCHES DON’T LIKE SMOOCHES!

Should we be hugging and kissing our dogs because it shows our dogs just how much we love them?

After all it’s how we as people show our love, affection and provide comfort to one another.

But dogs are not people and we can’t just assume that they enjoy this or understand what we are trying to communicate.

But my dog enjoys being hugged and kissed! Yes, there may be some dogs that do, or some dogs that have learnt over time to tolerate this invasion of their personal space because they have learnt there is no escape. They are trapped, confined, immobilised and helpless.

The majority of pictures of people hugging or kissing dogs clearly show many signs of stressed body language.

It’s so important to be aware of how our dogs are feeling by learning basic body language. It’s the way our dogs communicate and we owe it to them to understand their language.

Respect a dog’s personal space. Provide a choice. Seek consent. This is what builds relationship and trust.

Save your smooches for the people in your life that enjoy them!

Cats have their own unique ways of showering love and affection to their owners. 🐱💕

If you find yourself wondering how your feline friend expresses their adoration, here are some tell-tale signs that your cat is showing their love for you:

🐾 Head Butting: Cats will often rub their head or face against their owners to show affection and claim ownership.

🐾 Slow Blinking: If your cat blinks slowly while making eye contact with you, it's a sign that they trust and feel relaxed around you.

🐾 Bringing You Gifts: While not always pleasant, bringing you "gifts" like mice or toys is a sign that your cat thinks of you as family and wants to provide for you.

Does your cat do any of these things to show their love? Let us know in the comments!
