Another spectacular 3 days of coaching and education by the amazing Michael Ellis. Michael is one of the most skilled dog handlers and trainers on the planet, and also an empathetic, gentle, and welfare minded coach.
Nara and I have taken a big break for me to compete my memberships, so it was a great way for me to rekindle the spark for training together!
A huge thanks to for bringing Michael out, and the team at for hosting and providing an amazing venue. If your looking for more education opportunities, check out the !
And that's a wrap for day two! We had a great day full of wonderful questions on the complex and nuanced topic of using behavioural medications alongside training plans.

Sometimes you just need a big kiss in the ear from your favourite patients to make your day better!
Cheza is always such a pleasure to see in the clinic, and always has a little secret to whisper in my ears โค๏ธโค๏ธ
I am extremely proud to tell you all that after a tough 6 months of studying, that I have passed my membership exams in Veterinary Behaviour! This extra qualification means I have additional study and expertise in veterinary behavioural medicine, and can now call myself a behaviour vet!
It's been an extremely challenging 6 months, juggling my clinical work, behaviour business, and the occasional moment of personal time ๐คฃ
My dogs and my family have been amazing, always supporting me and accepting less walks and hang time! My friends and co workers have also been rockstars, I'm so sorry I've barely seen you all socially!
My study group of behaviour vets have been wonderful, to go through this huge process alone would be impossible. I'm so proud of the knowledge we've all gained, whatever the result of exams
All in all, I've gained so much insight and understanding, improved my skills, and become a better vet thanks to this exam.
I can't wait to continue to spread my knowledge of behavioural medicine, helping dogs in consults as well as giving my seminars. Thanks for following!
Dr. Michelle Rassool BSc, DVM, MANZCVS (Veterinary Behaviour)
Having fun on our afternoon walk at the clinic! It's great for my mind to have my dogs at work with me, it gets me out of the clinic and doing something non clinical, breathing in the fresh air and moving my body. Plus it's so nice to bring my mates with me when I can.
I guess my receptionist is taking an early lunch...
We've got a full day of behaviour consults lined up today, Nara was more than happy to come into the office early to help me set up ๐คฃ
Safestix from are her new obsession, and it's nice not having to worry about what the heck she does with a toy -it's close to indestructible, can't be swallowed or torn up, and doesn't interfere with our training skills. Win!
Three good looking dogs (and owners) hanging out in the misty morning!
Nara and her brother Viper and sister Pixel spent the day playing, walking and hanging out. Aren't they just gorgeous?
There's nothing magical about being related that helps dogs to get along - the exact same supervision, support and coaching that goes into any dog-dog relationship needs to exist. What IS on our side is that all these dogs are goofy, resilient, social and similar amounts of adrenaline, so turns out they get along pretty well!
Goodbye to this sweet boy in his new forever home! Jason, it's been a pleasure to care for you, helping you to lose 1kg, building your fitness so you can now at least jump, watching you learn to sleep in the bed, play with Nara and Roman, and most of all feel happy and confident in yourself.
We will miss you!
Cold mornings in Melbourne make it hard to get up and get out, but it's easier with this face insisting we do!
The fog makes visibility harder, so we've gotta keep a closer eye out for other dogs and people, but by the same token there's less folks out anyway.
Today we tidied up some sits in the heel, solidified auto recall in the presence of other dogs, and had a huge play and explore along the creek. Happy days!
Come visit me in NZ!
In case you're wondering why Herriot is sporting the ugliest haircut and blue dye job on his foot...
We were walking at the beach on the weekend, and he came back to me after walking through some grass with a bright blue foot!
I took him into the ocean to clean off what I thought must be line marking paint, only to realise it was oily, waxy material. Uh oh... rat bait!
I think someone must have been baiting on the beach (!) and the rain caused it to melt.
Poor fella had to be driven home wearing a pair of my socks as I couldn't get the blue material out. Once we got home, his foot had a hefty scrub with dishwashing detergent and hot water. Even then, the blue dye and some material was remaining, so he got a very undignified haircut.
Though I was confident he hadn't eaten any, we did some blood testing today to check for any changes to his clotting factors which would occur with rat bait toxicity.
Luckily the were all normal, reflecting that he hasn't had any toxin ingested. What a relief!!
No matter how careful you are, accidents can happen! I always try to be observant of my pets, meaning I was able to act on this weird incident! While that's not always possible, it's a great reminder to keep your dogs in sight and under your control at all times.
Come join me in NZ!

You might remember gorgeous Teddy who came to see me last week with a sore mouth. Well, today we took out that sore and fractured tooth for him.
You can see the crown of his carnassial tooth was fractured right off! We took digital x-rays to understand what was going on for Teddy in more detail.
The X rays comparing the healthy and broken tooth showed that roots were still remaining under the gumline, so they had to be removed in three pieces. Local anaesthetic was used to numb the site so Teddy wouldn't feel anything when he woke up.
Lastly, the area was sitched closed, and Teddy had a lovely long relax in the afternoon, recovering from his big day. Go Teddy! ๐งธ๐งธ
Jason is still up for adoption! Honestly a gentleman like this is too good to be true.
He's so relaxed with dogs, very playful with cats, and loves to hang out on your lap. He's got so much going for him, who's gonna snap this big boy up?!
Come and meet him! You'll take him home in a second!
Contact me or for information
It's always nice when my patients feel comfortable enough to relax in consultation! This certainly was not the case in previous consultations for this lovely boy Zool.
Zool is a very sweet dog who has been feeling a heap of stress recently. His owners have made huge progress by adjusting the way they interact with him, changing his routines and structuring interactions.
Alongside that, medication has been instrumental in 'clearing the fuzz' in his head that makes it so tough for him to behave in helpful ways. Zool is even wagging his tail happily now which was rarely the case before!
Zool's family have been extremely dedicated in approaching his behaviour treatment! And while we are not done yet, his improvement is awesome to see!
Visiting our mates at today. If you're after tailored holistic approach to veterinary care, Dr. Kumiko has you sorted!
Herriot and I had a great time learning about management options for keeping him healthy, as well as exploring the gorgeous purpose designed space.
Happy weekend from us! We are enjoying some time together after a long 5 weeks apart. Massive thanks in particular to who took Nara while I was away, with a full heart and cared for her as if she's their own.
As beautiful as the beaches are overseas, there's something so crisp and refreshing about Melbourne beaches that hits the spot.
It's a gorgeous day and the cool weather keeps the crowds at bay which is always nice for exercising without dealing with other people's dogs with less recall ๐
Hope you're enjoying some time with your furry buds this weekend!
As much as I love my behaviour work, I so enjoy my GP days! Today was no exception, with some of my absolute favourite patients and clients dropping by.
's newest family member Sport, for his second set of puppy vaccines! He demolished his treats in a toy and was so relaxed for his injection.
My gorgeous buddy Ninja the Ginger is always a team favourite! He's a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever and so sweet. Ninja had a few new lumps sampled to make sure there were no issues.
Lucky has a big place in my heart after he needed an urgent surgery after ingesting a ball. It's so lovely to be able to care for him when he's well. He had a full check up, vaccination, and we planned for some routine dental care for him.
Gio and her little sister Stitch are always a heap of fun! Today was a routine dental check for Gio after having a dental surgery at the start of the year. Her teeth are looking fantastic now!
Teddy left a surprise for his owner when they returned home (swipe over) - a broken tooth! We have no idea how that happened, but Teddy will be coming back in to have his tooth removed soon.
I think I have one of the best jobs in the world! I'm so lucky to have such awesome patients and owners trust me with the care of their pets.
We are back and raring to go for our first day of behaviour consults. There are just a few appointments left in May, so get in quick!
I had a wonderful first day back at yesterday, and the rest of my week is already looking fun filled (and booked out)! I'm so grateful to all my amazing clients who trust me with the care of their special pets, it's an honour.
Hope to see you all soon!
The last leg of my trip has been stopping over in the Seychelles, where my family are originally from. Seychelles is home to many unique animals, plants and marine life, owing to its remote location off the east coast of Africa, and isolation from any other land masses. Comprised of over 100 islands, each island often has its own unique features.
One of my favourite creatures on Seychelles has got to be the giant tortoise.
These amazing creatures:
๐๏ธ Can live easily over 100 years, perhaps up to 300.
๐๏ธโโ๏ธ Weigh between 100-250kgs
๐ Occupy a similar environmental niche as elephants, grazing the grasslands and trees.
๐ฅTake 8 months for their eggs to mature and hatch.
I visited the tortoises on a conservation island called Curieuse, where the tortoises range freely through the mountains, beach, mangroves and graasland. As you can see they were quite curious and happy to hang out!
I've just had a dream of a day riding Icelandic horses through hot springs, snow and mountains! The horses in Iceland are very special for many reasons.
First, they have two extra gaits (speeds) - the tรถlt, which is a 4 beat, smooth pace around the speed of the trot, and the skeiรฐ, flugskeiรฐ (flying pace) which is much faster!
Icelandic horses are usually small but mighty, at around 14 hands they are always referred to as horses, but are the size of ponies.
There are no other types of horses or ponies in Iceland, and luckily no major contagious equine diseases thanks to strict quarantine laws.
Icelandic horses have been bred purely with no other imported breeds in Iceland for the last 1000 years. Their ancestors were likely brought to Iceland with Viking settlers in around 900AD!
I had such a wonderful day enjoying spending time with these cool little dudes!
Last morning run with this little sunbeam before heading off on hols. I couldn't ask for a better place for her to be than with for her own little holiday. I'm definitely going to miss her more than she misses me!
Roman wishes to tell you that his best mate Jason will be holidaying at Preston, while we are away and he waits for his perfect home. If you're thinking of finding your perfect dog friendly gentleman, he's waiting for you there!!
Aaand that's a wrap! Me and the office cube are now officially closed for holidays until the 30th of April!
My last day of GP consulting is tomorrow, Friday 22nd of March.
It's been a heap of work to fit in lots of urgent behaviour cases in the last 4 weeks, and I'm grateful to so many clients for understanding the long wait until May for appointments.
During this time, your regular vet is a great resource to you, and if you need assistance in the next month they should be your first port of call.
Stay tuned for holiday pics incoming!
Jason is still looking for a new home of his own! I'm heading on leave and trying my best to get him in digs of his own before this weekend - do you know someone looking for the most dog friendly cat of all time? Then this is him! He's extremely confident playing with Nara, would be happiest sitting on your lap and having a cuddle, and content to be spending his days inside sitting next to you. All enquiries for adoption to Maneki Neko Cat Rescue.
Hey there, fabulous folks! I'm Jason, your resident bundle of joy and boundless energy. If there's one thing you should know about me, it's that I ooze confidence from every whisker. Whether it's...

Understanding how to safely restrain and position your dog in the vet clinic makes a HUGE difference in what treatments can be done, the examination quality, and most of all your dog's level of stress (and yours!). So many of my clients have learned how to correctly and safely position and handle their dogs, meaning the vet team almost never need to take their dogs from them for blood collection, injections, ear exams, iv catheter placement etc and that's the dream! If you're in NZ, you have the chance to hear about what all my hand waving is about in this video, and why it's so important when restraining the standing dog! Aug 24th - Handle With Care! This seminar has been paired with First Aid give you all the tools you need to care for your dog in an unexpected situation. Aug 25th - If you own or care for a dog that needs medication for anxiety, then Medication and Modification is for you! This one day seminar is essential to understand how to integrate a medication plan into a dogs behaviour treatment plan. Tickets available through @dogtrainingseminarsnz

Good morning from another beautiful Sunday walk! Sunday morning musings from nature with Nara. If you're struggling feeling like you're comparing yourself to others, you are not alone! Ultimately the skills and input you need and want will vary hugely depending on your situation. Don't let others overshadow your work, disparage the path you choose, or make you feel small. Just two gorgeous doggies who without help can't be handled or examined at the vets, chilling after successful procedures! Bothe Rowdy and Nala (unrelated) are gorgeous, but sensitive and worried dogs who find vet visits tough! With a combination of pre planning, pre visit medicines, owner coaching and handling, environment management in the clinic, and staff skill and training, we got these two through the whole day safely and calmly! Each individual dog can benefit from a personalised plan, whether that's using equipment, restraint techniques, or other clever ideas to get things working! If you've been finding vet visits a dread, there might be a solution, just for you! #vet #vetnurse #vetclinic #vethospital #veterinaryscience #vetmed #vetmedicine #vettech #dvm #rvn #dog #dogsofinstagram #dogsofaustralia #dogtraining #dogsofmelbourne #dogbehavior #dogbehaviour #veterinarybehavior #malinoisofinstagram #bordercollie #puppy #puppylove
Dog to dog play can also be a great way to promote healthy emotional state, for dogs that enjoy it! Secure location, close supervision, and intentional pairing is a must! Play allows dogs to fine tune their communication (receiving as well as giving signals) It can help them to develop physical skills (like little Sport here who is learning how to dog!), and practice behaviours. It also allows them to build relationships with other dogs, test and confirm boundaries, problem solve and learn to modulate their arousal levels and interaction styles. All dogs can benefit from coaching and supervision of their play, and this small snippet was only part of a carefully orchestrated meet up. Can you see some hallmarks of helpful play behaviour in this clip? โญ Sharing of chaser and chasee role Moments of fast movement and moments of slow movement โญ Breaks to reaffirm that the chasing is not aggressive โญ Exaggerated spins and movements to signify the behaviours are 'pretend' โญ 'Sharing' or coaching by the older dog to teach the young dog how the play should look โญ Younger dog has access to his human safety net when things get a little scary. #vet #vetnurse #vetclinic #vethospital #veterinaryscience #vetmed #vetmedicine #vettech #dvm #rvn #dog #dogsofinstagram #dogsofaustralia #dogtraining #dogsofmelbourne #dogbehavior #dogbehaviour #veterinarybehavior #malinoisofinstagram #malinois #puppy #puppylove

I've worked hard on developing neutrality and relaxation around horses since Nara was young, and it's paid off! You never know when you might need your dog to be neutral around a stimulus, so in young puppies it pays to assume you'll need it all, and get plenty of exposure to a wide range of experiences. #vet #vetnurse #vetclinic #vethospital #veterinaryscience #vetmed #vetmedicine #vettech #dvm #rvn #dog #dogsofinstagram #dogsofaustralia #dogtraining #dogsofmelbourne #dogbehavior #dogbehaviour #veterinarybehavior #malinoisofinstagram #malinois #puppy #puppylove

Enjoying the simple sounds of the creek this morning during a little paddle. I train my dogs for many reasons, but this has got to be one of the nicest pay offs. Allowing them freedom to explore, ensuring their safety, and enjoying so much time together in the great outdoors. A little baby fledgling noisy miner was brought into the clinic by a well meaning person today. It can be hard to imagine that these little bubba's are actually supposed to be out of the nest, learning to flap and fly. Unless they are injured, being with their family rather than the clinic is the place for them to be! Luckily I was able to reunite this little tacker with their family promptly. I popped baby I'm a cardboard box with leaves and sticks. First I checked that I had found the right family, and that these birds weren't going to attack baby. Once the reunion was over, I put the little box safely up a tree, where the family could care for baby and keep it safe from predators If you find a baby bird, it's worth calling your local clinic for advice, as many of them belong exactly where they are ๐ฆ๐ฆ #vet #vetnurse #vetclinic #vethospital #veterinaryscience #vetmed #vetmedicine #vettech #dvm #rvn #dog #dogsofinstagram #dogsofaustralia #dogtraining #dogsofmelbourne #dogbehavior #dogbehaviour #veterinarybehavior #malinoisofinstagram #malinois #puppy #puppylove #wildlife #bird

By the time folks get to me for a veterinary behaviour consultation, they've been through some methods of trying to address their dog's behaviour. For a some, that's meant trying at home with bits and pieces from the internet. For others that's been working with a trainer, of varying qualities. It's often the case that owners will in hindsight realise the training recommended was dodgy, unskilled and unethical, and in some cases down right abusive. It can be really upsetting to think that they've done something that has been detrimental to their dogs. That takes guts and kindness to process! Often a quick check of the trainer's website will give me hints as to the quality of their work, or their ability to produce dogs with joyful and happy outlooks. Here's just a few of the red flags that I've seen in cursory glances at the websites. So come, join me on the red flag tour! ๐ฉ 'We don't use food' is a quick way to exclude the major motivator for many dogs. While it's ideal to have mutliple motivators, when a trainer rules them out inherently, it tells they're missing out a huge part of the picture. ๐ฉ 'One session and we are done', if it sounds too good to be true, it is. ๐ฉ 'Guaranteed results' assumes your life, your dog's development, and the issues you are dealing are always going to be the same, and that's extremely short sighted. ๐ฉ 'Natural communication, energy, pack leader' and their buzzword mates have no role in what's ultimately understanding learning theory, having a broad skillset and applying science in a creative and artistic manner. While there's almost elements of educated guesswork, it shouldn't be the body of your work. Leave your vibe at the the door. I'm sure I'll get to see many more in my journey! On the other hand, some green flags are: โ Seeing fun, accurate and impressive work in videos of the trainer and their dog. โ Seeing the trainer work and have success with dogs like yours โ Seeing techniques used that encoura
Did you know that before I was a vet, or trained dogs that I worked with horses? Unfortunately due to the demands of vet school I had to give up my passion, but today I stepped back in time and visited my old riding school to help out and work a little pony (pictured here)! Daisy was very sweet but a little shocked that she couldn't be cheeky with me! I had such a great day reliving some of the best memories of my life.
