Recently Ive had quite a few emails asking if I do powder photoshoots for dogs. The answer is no and I just wanted to explain to everyone why I wont as some people have become quite angry.
Powder shots, like Holi powder or even coloured talcum powders, can pose various risks to animals.
Respiratory Issues: Animals, especially those with sensitive respiratory systems like birds and small mammals, can inhale the fine powder particles, leading to respiratory distress or irritation. Even larger animals like dogs and cats can experience discomfort if they inhale the powder.
Skin Irritation: The powder may cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in animals, particularly those with sensitive skin. This can lead to discomfort, itching, and potential skin infections.
Ingestion: Animals, especially curious ones, may ingest the powder while grooming themselves or investigating their surroundings. Ingestion of coloured powder can lead to gastrointestinal problems such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and potential blockages in the digestive tract.
Eye Irritation: Coloured powder can cause irritation or injury if it comes into contact with an animal's eyes. This can lead to discomfort, redness, and potential damage to the eyes if not promptly addressed.
Toxicity: Some coloured powders may contain ingredients that are toxic to animals if ingested. Even if the powder itself is not toxic, the dyes and additives used in its production could be harmful if ingested in large quantities.
Behavioural Stress: Animals may become stressed or anxious in an environment where they are exposed to unfamiliar substances like coloured powders. This stress can negatively impact their behaviour and overall well-being during the photoshoot.
It is my opinion that while powder shots may seem visually appealing for pet photography, the potential risks to the animals' health and well-being outweigh any aesthetic benefits. It's essential for me to prioritise the safety and comfort of the animals when planning and executing pet photoshoots.
