Did you know Lily plants and flowers are extremely toxic to cats?

We recently had the small but mighty Noah in hospital after ingesting lilies.

Noah’s owner had received a beautiful bouquet of flowers as a gift. She was completely unaware that the flowers were toxic, but after Noah made a bee line for the flowers and had a munch on some petals she decided to google if this was safe. To her shock she soon realized that even the smallest amount of lily ingestion can be fatal. Noah was quickly rushed to Casey Pet emergency. There he was made to vomit (to remove the toxin from his intestinal tract) and administered charcoal (to bind the toxin within his abdominal tract). He was then placed on Intravenous fluids and had bloods taken.

Lily toxicity is often fatal unless early intervention is taken. Sadly, the toxicity causes kidney disease in cats.

Noah came to Clyde North Vet for on going hospital care after his initial visit to emergency. Noah showed no symptoms of toxicity however preventative treatment is still necessary.

*The most common symptoms are usually Lethargy, vomiting and inappetence.

Noah was acting like a normal healthy 16-week-old cheeky kitten. He kept the nurses on their toes, constantly chewing at his drip line, because he was so bright and playing with his drip line, he had to return to the emergency clinic for overnight care as it was imperative that he receive constant Intravenous fluids for a minimum of 48hours to prevent any kidney damage.

Noah returned to the clinic for a second day of intravenous fluids and blood testing. Luckily Noah’s blood tests showed no signs of kidney damage, and the extremely lucky kitten returned to his now lily free home.

Has your bunny got a little long in the tooth?

Did you know? Rabbits have teeth that never stop growing and these teeth can become problematic.

The natural grinding action that takes place when a rabbit chews normally wears teeth down enough so that they are kept at an ideal length. However pet rabbits often need to have their teeth manually trimmed due to several health, environmental, and genetic factors.

If you notice your Rabbits teeth getting too long, please call the clinic to arrange an appointment and a tooth trim, just like little Deluka here who had an extra long tooth.
