✨ Ruth’s chemo day! ✨
It was wonderful to have sweet Ruth back in the clinic today for her 7th cycle of chemotherapy.
Ruth was diagnosed with a high-grade intestinal lymphoma, and her family elected a less-invasive oral chemotherapy protocol. She has responded very well — she has regained weight, is clinically stable, and continues to maintain an excellent quality of life.
Every three weeks Ruth visits our Oncology team (pictured here with our Oncology Vet Fabiana) for her check-ups, blood tests and her next round of oral chemo.
We’re so proud of this brave girl. Go Ruth! 💛🐾

✨ November Seminar Wrap-Up! ✨
What a fantastic night at the Builders Arms — huge thanks to all the amazing vets who joined us after a busy day! 💚
🦴 Jonathan Speelman kicked things off with fracture repair cases (including some wild high-rise falls from his time in Hong Kong!).
🐱 Warren McInnes shared practical tips for managing the dyspnoeic cat and performing thoracocentesis.
🧠 Chad Berman wrapped up with pearls on tackling complex cases, taking a great history, and avoiding diagnostic tunnel vision.
It was a brilliant evening of learning, laughter, and catching up with colleagues. Thanks to everyone who came along — we can’t wait to see you at the next one in February! 🙌

Alerting all dog owners! we have seen a spike in paralysis tick presentations in the last couple of weeks at our Emergency Centre. Paralysis ticks (ixodes holocyclus) us common on the eastern seaboard of Australia and are present in Victoria in the Gippsland region. They are not generally in metropolitan Melbourne or Geelong. Regardless, any dog that visits an area where ticks are endemic, or has interactions with humans that have been to these areas, may suffer from tick paralysis. The toxin from the saliva of the tick leads to an ascending flaccid paralysis that may lead to respiratory failure. The earliest clinical signs may be stumbling on the hindlimbs, or a change in bark pitch.

Thankfully, we have tick antisera available for treatment. If your dog is showing signs of ascending paralysis (hindlimbs forward) and you or your pet has been in a known tick region, please see emergency veterinary care. Victoria is unique compared to other areas in Australia, with two distinct tick seasons - spring (now! and autumn) with relatively fewer cases in the height of summer compared to NSW and Queensland.

If you are traveling to a known tick area with your dog, please speak with your local vet clinic regarding tick prevention. There are some excellent options available.

It's snake season again and a great time for a reminder about ways to avoid interactions with snakes, what to look for if a bite occurs, and importantly, what to do when one does.

Snakes are attracted to bushy areas with a water and food source. Keep your lawn and garden tidy, and be particularly alert if you keep chickens or birds in the back yard. Avoid walking your dogs off-leash near waterways in the summer months. Beaches are usually safe for off-leash walking where permitted. Snakes are present throughout suburban Melbourne and are very common in coastal regions.

SIGNS OF A BITE:
* Collapse - often followed by apparent recovery
* Blood / puncture wound on the nose, face, or neck
* Dilated pupils and reduced eyelid blinking
* Can progress to wobbly gait and eventually paralysis
* Urine can be dark, and vomiting and diarrhea can occur initially.

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR PET IS BITTEN BY A SNAKE:
* DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CATCH OR KILL THE SNAKE - we have snake venom test kits and multi-species antivenom.
* Keep your pet as calm as possible - excess movement will enhance the spread of venom.
* Seek veterinary care as soon as possible. Our 24hr number is 9092 0400 - call ahead and we can be ready to help you as soon as you arrive.
* If the bite is on a limb, gently apply a firm bandage.
* Early administration of appropriate antivenom and supportive care gives your pet the best chance of survival. If treated early, most pets will survive a snake bite.
