TOE GRIPS-check our Mr. Basil modeling after his fitting.
did you know we stock a variety of mobility aids including toe grips. Geriatric dogs or dogs with mobility issues can have a lot of problems with slippery floors. We personally find that most dogs hate wearing booties or socks, and sometimes covering all the slippery floors at home is impossible.
Toe grips work by increasing the gripping surface of the nail to allow for more traction.
These are aimed at older dogs or dogs with mobility issues, rather than young active dogs.
We find the grips last for 2-3 months and do not need to be removed daily like boots, once on, they stay on!
Not only do we stock these, we can measure and apply them to your dogs nails.
Give us a call to book an appt for toe grip fitting!
We hope you all had a wonderful festive season
The whole team here at Canine Hydro would like to thank you for your support and friendship in 2023.

🐕Success story🐕 Karla is a dog that has touched us all, she is a fighter! Karlas story began with us when she was diagnosed with IVDD (intervertebral disc disease) in February 23. Its very uncommon to see this is larger breeds, much more common in dachshunds. Karla was fine one minute, and paralyzed in the back legs the next. She had surgery at Centre for Animal Referral & Emergency - CARE and given the all clear to start rehab in May 23. She couldn't stand or walk on her own, she was weak and needed around the clock care. Her amazing parents spent each day and night rotating her to different sides, toileting her and lifting her. Never underestimate the care required for a large dog with high needs!! Her parents are amazing! We started hydro with her, full assistance with multiple people. She needed help standing and one of our therapists was required to 'walk' her legs for her-an extremely physical task. Each time we saw her, she improved. But Karla suddenly became very sick in Sept 23. Her gut had ruptured and she was in a life threatening situation. Again, her parents got her through surgery and the long recovery. She is back doing laser and rehab now...and she is kicking goals!!!! She now walks unassisted in the tank, she can toilet by herself and she is happy! She is a real fighter and her parents are her number 1 support crew. We are so so proud of her ❤❤
Let's talk about conservative management of cruciate disease 🐕 Cruciate disease also known as ACL damage is most commonly (90%-95%) degenerative rather than traumatic. The cranial cruciate ligament degrades over time and often ruptures completely. During the degrading process, arthritis develops due to ongoing inflammation. Once ruptured, this process speeds up, leading to a lot of pain, inflammation, arthritis and muscle wastage. As the muscles atrophy, the dog puts more and more pressure on the joint, and the vicious cycle begins. When it comes to management of cruciate disease (both pre and post rupture), surgical intervention gives the best prognosis long term. There are several procedures available but a TPLO (Tibial plateau leveling osteotomy) is the most successful for any size dog. What happens when surgery isnt an option? Conservative management of this progressive disease is both challenging and difficult. Conservative management may be chosen due to the age of the dog, anaesthetic risk, or financial reasons to name a few. However, surgical intervention should always be considered first. Conservative therapy involves pain relief (this is imperative), nutraceuticals (such a 4cyte and omega 3s), home modifications (non-slip flooring, ramps, raised bowls etc), and therapy such a laser, hydrotherapy and land based physio to rebuild muscles and maintain strength. Will conservative management allow normal fuction in the future? The simple answer is no. Whilst we can manage their pain, and significantly improve their mobility, it is unlikely they will ever return to 100% function. Can we begin conservative management and then do surgical intervention? YES! The literature shows the sooner surgical intervention is performed, the better the outcome and prognosis. However, all the conservative management strategies will be useful to assist with recovery of surgery and assist to protect the other leg. Cruciate disease is one of the most common condition
